#142 - Summiting Metabolic Health: MHS 2020 Recap, Joe Rogan Goes Carnivore, & the Latest in Keto Science

Fresh from the Metabolic Health Summit (#MHS2020), Geoffrey Woo and Dr. Latt Mansor sit down to chat about their experience interacting with the community and learning from all the fascinating presentations. The Metabolic Health Summit was created to bring two worlds together: science and society. Over four immersive days, Geoff and Dr. Mansor were exposed to some of the most cutting edge research and applications of ketosis and metabolic therapies from leading physicians around the world. It's where research meets the real world. In this episode of the H.V.M.N. Podcast, Geoff and Dr. Mansor discuss... The presentations Dr. Mansor found especially interesting (Dr. John Newman, Dr. Mary Newport, & Dr. Benjamin Bikman to name a few), and sharing nuggets of the latest science he thought would be most valuable to our listeners. Meeting the community! Many of the guests we've had on the podcast were at MHS in-person, along with fans of the podcast. Geoff & Dr. Mansor express their gratitude and joy interacting with everyone. The movement is truly growing! Perhaps unsurprisingly, given recent popularity / controversy, one of the big topics underlying the summit was the #carnivore diet. Geoff and Dr. Mansor discuss the diet, shouting out Joe Rogan's instagram post on closing out #WorldCarnivoreMonth with truly amazing results on his physique and autoimmune condition. #140 - The Science Of Dopamine Fasting: More Than Just A Fad ft. Dr. Cameron Sepah

"Dopamine Fasting" is a recent hot trend for improving productivity, mental discipline, and essentially structuring your time with what matters most to you...without modern distractions. Dopamine is neurotransmitter involved in our brain’s system for motivation, reward, and pleasure. Even when encountering seemingly innocent actions such as scrolling through your social media feed and gawking a cute puppy picture..dopamine is getting released in the brain. Could periodically abstaining from constant dopamine releases result in a better version of yourself? Dr. Cameron Sepah, a clinical professor of psychiatry at UC San Francisco and returning podcast guest, popularized dopamine fasting in August when he published a "Dopamine Fasting" guide and made the rounds in the press. “Taking a break from behaviors that trigger strong amounts of dopamine release (especially in a repeated fashion) allows our brain to recover and restore itself,” Sepah wrote in a Vox article. Without such breaks, we become habituated to high levels of the chemical, so we feel the need to seek out ever-higher doses of stimulation to achieve the same pleasurable effect. With principles of abstinence not unlike intermittent fasting, it's not a hard reach to connect the parallels between intermittent fasting and dopamine fasting. Cutting-edge "biohacker-y" practices tend to be an easy target for attracting dismissive articles that fail to take into account the actual science.. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly apparent that optimizing articles for "clicks" and "virality" are becoming standard practice from even the most well-respected outlets.   In this no-holds barred podcast, we interview the man behind the "Dopamine Fasting" movement.   In this episode, Geoff & Dr. Sepah discuss: · Dr. Sepha's evidence-based definition of 'dopamine fasting' vs what is being portrayed in popular media such as the NTY. · The science behind brain addiction, specifically through the lens of modern technology driven by social media, self-validation thought the internet, & more. Cameron's approach derives from cognitive behavioral science, a well-studied field of science. · The dissatisfaction Cameron felt when reading the the latest guidelines from the American Psychology Association: "Many characteristics commonly linked with masculinity — such as courage, strength, compassion, leadership, and assertiveness — are often associated with positive psychological and behavioral health. However, according to the psychological research cited in the guidelines, some masculine social norms can have negative consequences for the health of boys and men."   Without a doubt, it's a hefty & multi-faced topic. We hope you enjoy this honest conversation! Follow Dr. Cameron Sepah here: https://twitter.com/DrSepah   Save 25% off H.V.M.N. Less is More: The Case for Minimalist Fitness & Animal Nutrition · Jerry Teixeria · #139

Minimalism can be applied to improve various aspects of one's life. Jerry Teixeria, faced with the realities of raising children and attending to his family, going to the gym 6x a week quickly became unsustainable. Shifting his focus to bodyweight training & progressive calisthenics in the comforts of his own sunny backyard, Jerry reached his goals of physique, healthspan, & more...all by dropping the weights. This shift in his training approach even carried over to his nutrition protocol. Once a follower of the common "6 pre-prepped meals a day" advice preached by the traditional fitness community, Jerry simplified his eating habits and attained even greater results. From intermittent fasting (warrior diet) to eating a carnivore diet (correcting his autoimmune symptoms in the process), Jerry has run a wide gamut of self-experiments that he dives deep into on this week's podcast. In this episode, Geoff & Jerry discuss: The benefits of progressive bodyweight training and how one can get started. Why could this more primal approach be more effective than the standard heavy squat lifts you see others pushing through at your local gym? The importance of continually overloading your workouts in order to avoid "plateauing". In the case of body-weight exercises such as handstands, pushups, and pull-ups, what does Jerry suggest one can do to ensure overloading is happening during a routine? Jerry's experience with the carnivore diet, and why he is now more "carnivore-ish". Good vs. Bad Science: Keto Hype, Cancer Research, & Fighting Misinformation · Kevin Bass, MS · #138

Kevin Bass is unafraid to publicly call out those in the health & nutrition community he deems irresponsible...perhaps even dangerous. Kevin states: “Bad science will hurt people”. Passionate about truly helping people, his mission is to stop misinformation from spreading. Albeit a controversial figure in the ketogenic diet community, we’ve found that Kevin isn’t as “anti-keto” as some would say. He’s an MD/PhD student whose thesis research actually focuses on the ketogenic diet and cancer. He’s acutely aware of the positive, neutral, & negative research, and does his best to bring a balanced perspective backed by published science. In this episode, Geoff & Kevin discuss: What about keto is overhyped & what is actually exciting? For example, is it curing diabetes or just putting it into remission? Does it have the potential to treat cancer? Sensationalism vs. pragmatism: How can we create better science for the public? How can we determine who is a legitimate science-based health expert and who is not? Kevin’s own personal health journey, nutrition protocols, challenges faced in medical school, & what motivates him. Immediately Reduce Glucose Levels Even After Drinking 75g of Sugar · Research Roundup (Ketone Ester)

It's the holiday season, and that often means big, happy meals with friends and family. That apple pie (that you may or may not give in) would be a glucose challenge for your body to handle. What if you can preemptively improve your body's metabolic ability to handle that serving of pie with exogenous ketones? A pair of studies from University of British Columbia by Prof. Jonathan Little and Oxford Prof. Kieran Clarke researched how H.V.M.N. Ketone impacts glycemic response in both normal and obese populations. Before participants consumed a 75g glucose drink, they consumed a ketone monoester. The results? Reduced glycemic response and markers of insulin sensitivity. In this episode of Research Roundup, Geoffrey Woo explains the studies' design, analyzes the specific results, and finally, what one could take away from the science and apply it to their personal life.  On a keto "cheat meal" day, could you perhaps reduce the negative effects a carb-heavy meal would have on your metabolism?
