Ep 28: Energy Management Series: Mental Energy
As physicians, our minds are always working overtime - processing complex cases, making rapid decisions, and juggling the endless “invisible labour” that follows us home. Mental energy is often the most taxed of our resources, yet it’s also the one we have the greatest ability to manage if we know how.
In this final episode of our 5-part series on Energy Management, Drs. Sarah Lea and Alicia Power shine a light on the underestimated force of mental energy. From understanding cognitive load and the toll of invisible labour to leveraging time management frameworks that actually work, this conversation is designed to help you protect your focus and reclaim the mental clarity you need!

Ep 25: Understanding the Burnout Narrative with Dr. Rabia Khan
We’ve been talking a lot about burnout lately - on this podcast and in the broader community - but let’s be honest: sometimes these conversations feel surface-level at best, and futile at worst. Maybe you're screaming inside, thinking, "Sure, it all sounds nice, but the system is too broken, and I'm too stuck to change anything."
Today, Dr. Sarah Lea sits down with Dr. Rabia Khan - PhD, MS, and Postdoctoral Fellow - to go deeper. Together, they crack open what’s really being addressed when we talk about burnout. Dr. Khan’s research explores the sociocultural and historical forces driving disillusionment in medicine - and in life. In her work, she also shines a light on the epistemic injustice of excluding diverse bodies and experiences - especially women and other intersectionally marginalized groups - from the research that defines what it means to be "well" in medicine.
Buckle up for an eye-opening conversation that contextualizes the different discourses surrounding burnout, unpacks the enculturation of medicine, and explores real pathways toward a lighter, more connected, future. The Energy Management Series will resume in the following weeks!

Ep 24: Energy Management Series: Emotional Energy
As female-identifying physicians, we're no strangers to the invisible weight of emotional labour - whether it’s managing complex patient interactions, juggling competing demands at home, or absorbing the emotional load of our teams and loved ones. In this powerful episode, Sarah and Alicia unpack how emotional energy gets drained and, more importantly, how to replenish it.
In Episode 3 of our 5-part series on Energy Management, Drs. Sarah Lea and Alicia Power turn the spotlight to a deeply underestimated force in how we show up: emotional energy. From the role of emotional intelligence and boundaries to the science of gratitude and recognition, this conversation offers a roadmap for cultivating emotional stamina in a field that rarely stops to ask how we’re doing.

Ep 23: Energy Management Series: Physical Energy
Ever hit that 3 PM wall and wonder how you're supposed to keep going? In Episode 2 of our 5-part series on energy management, Drs. Alicia Power and Sarah Lea dive into the first - and most foundational - quadrant of energy: physical energy. Building on last episode’s introduction to energy management, they explore how nutrition, movement, and not least of all, rest, and renewal fuel our capacity to show up with focus, presence, and purpose. Because before we can manage our time, we need to manage the energy that powers it.

Ep 22: Introduction to Energy Management: A New Lens for Physician Well-Being
We often feel constrained by the omnipresent restrictions of time. "We don't have time! We ran out of time! We wish we had more time"! But time is a finite resource that we cannot control. What we can control, however, is the amount and type of energy we can apply to our precious time, and that is what today's podcast is all about!
In this episode, Drs. Alicia Power and Sarah Lea break down the core concepts of energy management. They introduce the four main quadrants of energy - physical, emotional, mental, and integrative - and how each plays a role in our time management and overall wellbeing.
This is the first of five episodes in the series discussing all things energy, and if you'd like to take a deeper dive into the topic yourself, pick up a copy of The Way We're Working Isn't Working by Tony Schwartz, as well as our workbook, Empowered Time: An Energy Management Guide for Physicians, designed to equip you, a physician, with the tools and strategies necessary to reclaim control over your time and feel in control of your life.

Ep 21: The Capsule Wardrobe: Simplifying your Life while Elevating your Style
What is a capsule wardrobe and should you have one? Feeling good in our skin often extends to feeling good in our clothes, so today Dr. Power is sitting down with personal stylists Ash and Jamie from Two Blueprints to discuss the various virtues of a capsule wardrobe!
They talk about how capsule wardrobes can be filled with personal style and expression, despite being designed around versatile staple pieces, and the benefit decluttering can have in lessening our mental load. The work around personal style can be deeper than you expect, often helping us in times of transformation, imbuing us with energy and confidence, with a palpable shift when that mark is hit, freeing us to be our fullest selves - inside and out.

Ep 20: Sharing the Mental Load at Home with Dr. Pip Houghton
An American study found was that almost 40% of female physicians switch to part-time hours or leave medicine altogether within six years of completing residency. Some studies attribute this to the overwhelming mental and emotional load that female physicians carry both at work and at home.
If we're looking at the workforce, 50% of physicians and 60% of current medical students in Canada right now are female. If we extrapolate 40% of the workforce from within those numbers within six years of completing their training, this is a crisis situation and makes today's conversation not only engaging - but pressing.
To guide us, Dr. Pip Houghton, a family doctor and certified Fair Play Facilitator, joins Dr. Alicia Power to discuss the crucial issue of mental load and its impact on families, especially those in the medical field. Dr. Pip shares her journey towards becoming a Fair Play Facilitator and how Eve Rodsky's book "Fair Play" has transformed her family's approach to household tasks. Covering the definitions of mental load, emotional labor, and domestic labor, and the importance of equitable distribution of tasks. Dr. Pip emphasizes the significance of having structured conversations around household responsibilities and invites listeners to learn more through reading Fair Play, watching the Fair Play Documentary, attending the upcoming 2025 Revive Physician's Retreat, visiting Dr. Pip Houghton's website - and of course listening to and sharing this podcast episode!
