Turning Fans into Customers with David Meerman Scott | BBB 098

David Meerman Scott is an internationally acclaimed business strategist, entrepreneur, advisor to emerging companies, and public speaker. He is the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of ten previous books, including The New Rules of Marketing & PR, Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead, and The New Rules of Sales & Service. Today we talk about his new book, Fanocracy - Turning Fans Into Customers and Customers Into Fans. He coauthored this book with his daughter Reiko Scott, and they talk about taking this idea of fandom and making it a prescription for your business. Highlights from the episode: After you create a product/service, you need to let go of your creations. Let people share their fandom in the way that they want. Consumers don't want to be told how to engage with a brand. Make your customers "insiders" by giving them a peek inside the business. When you share the fandoms of your personal life in your professional life, you can create an organization that draws people in that are fans of you in the same way you are a fan of those things. Quotes: "I believe we are entering a new phase, a phase around humanity" "When you are physically in the presence of people at a company... the human emotional bond is much stronger." "The relationships we build with our customers are more important than the products and services we sell to them." "When people are passionate about something, that passion shows." Make an Impact - Personal Branding (Part 3 of 3) | BBB 097

Today we talk about making an impact with your customers for coaches, consultants, and experts. This is the first topic in my three part series on personal branding, covering the most important steps to build a personal brand that drives growth for your coaching business. The #1 way you can build authority in your industry and stand out from the competition is with personal branding. But there are key ingredients into developing a personal brand that must be present for it to succeed. The three topics covered in the series are: 1) Finding your voice and message 2) Building a community 3) Creating impact Today we dive in to creating impact. The three components of creating impact are: 1) frameworks, 2) tools/skills, and 3) value exchange. Here are the highlights from the episode: When you build a community you have the opportunity to learn the challenges of your people and to help them solve problems. The first thing you need to help solve people's problems is a framework. This allows you to be consistent with how you people without having to reinvent the wheel every time. It also is something that can be ownable and uniquely yours which sets you apart from the competition. Also, when you have a framework it means you are able to repeat success from client to client and you can find where you can make your process better over time. The second thing you need to make an impact are tools and skills to share with your clients. As you find tools that you've seen results with, you can recommend them and save people time as a trusted adviser. You also have tactical skills that you've developed that you can pass on and save people the time it takes to learn through trial and error. The final thing you need is a value exchange. You need to create something that actually helps people, makes their lives easier, or creates some kind of change for them. They need to leave ahead of where they started. Also, that value needs to be exchanged. People only value what they pay for and it holds them accountable to the work they need to do on their end to succeed. Your goal is to prove that the value extracted was far greater than the initial investment. Also this connects beautifully within the circle of the personal branding framework. If you are missing any one of the three you'll find it difficult to succeed and grow. Episode Links: Are you looking to launch a podcast in 2020 or for some marketing advice? Build Your Community - Personal Branding (Part 2 of 3) | BBB 096

Today we talk about building your brand community for coaches, consultants, and experts. This is the second topic in my three part series on personal branding, covering the most important steps to build a personal brand that drives growth for your coaching business. The #1 way you can build authority in your industry and stand out from the competition is with personal branding. But there are key ingredients into developing a personal brand that must be present for it to succeed. The three topics covered in the series are: 1) Finding your voice and message 2) Building a community 3) Creating impact Today we dive in to building a community. The three components of building a community are: 1) authority, 2) discovery, and 3) list building. Here are the highlights from the episode: You have to be known for something and have authority and expertise for people to want to listen to what you have to say. People need a reason to go somewhere, so you need to let them know they can look to you for guidance. When you establish authority, you get to curate the experience and bring together like-minded individuals. When you do that, it encourages engagement through common interest. The second component of community building is discovery. A community gives you somewhere to send people after they meet you or come across your content. It turns a one time encounter into a potential long term relationship. As you build a community, you have the opportunity to ask for their information which puts you in control of your future communication with those people. People in your community have a better chance of receiving your content across social media and within your own channels which builds your following. A community also gives you the opportunity to ask people about the challenges they have that you can help with. The third component in community building is list building. You need to thoughtfully create a valuable resource to give away in exchange for contact information. As you build your list, you can promote your content, you can tell your story, you can turn cold leads into warm leads, and you can sell. More importantly, you can ask them what it is that they need, and then build it for them as a product. If you take these steps you will be well on your way to building your community. As you build your community and ask them what their challenges are, you will be better prepared to take the next step in your personal branding journey which is providing solutions and making an impact. We'll talk about that on the next show! Episode Links: Are you looking to launch a podcast in 2020 or for some marketing advice? Find Your Voice - Personal Branding (Part 1 of 3) | BBB 095

Today we talk about finding your brand voice for coaches, consultants, and experts. The three topics covered in the series are: 1) Finding your voice and message 2) Building a community 3) Creating impact Today we dive in to finding your voice and message. The three components of finding your voice are: 1) positioning, 2) platform, and 3) social proof. Here are the highlights from the episode: Creating content is the best way to find your voice. As you create you will see themes develop which you will become known for. Positioning is the first step as it helps you know why people should choose you vs the competition. If you don't own what makes you unique, you are missing a huge opportunity. Once you have a position, you then need to carefully tell your story to highlight your position. The second step in finding your voice is to build a platform. Most people just post on social media channels, but you need to people people from social media into your world through content platforms such as your blog, your podcast, or your Youtube channel. These are the key channels where you can create a catalog of your ideas and content that is searchable. Now you have a place to point people that enter your world. The third step is to create social proof. This is about leveraging your content to demonstrate authority through both your ideas, and through association with the guests that you interview or co-create with. Outside of content on your own platforms, you have to find a way to share your knowledge with other people's channels. Get featured in known publications in your industry or be active in your industry circles and let people know about your content. If you take these three steps you will be well on your way to finding your voice and honing your message. As you find your voice, you will be better prepared to take the next step in your personal branding journey which is building your community. We'll talk about that on the next show! On Monday, January 13th, 2020, we'll be dropping our first interview episode of Season 2. It's an interview with David Meerman Scott And here are some highlights from this episode: - The top way to change your approach to marketing and branding is to change the way you set priorities. You need to take the time to set a strategy that focuses on driving the most attention at the best price. - The #1 mistake entrepreneurs are making in marketing today is investing in an agency to manage their social media posts. Those posts are better managed in-house, and that money is better spent on traffic driving Facebook ads. - A top priority on your to do list should be to develop your message, find your voice, and understand how you differentiate yourself. - The best reason to create content is to find your voice. Most people think creating content is about gaining subscribers. That's true in the long run, but short term your goal is to develop your voice so you can understand what you want to be "known" for. - The three prong approach to personal branding is 1) Focus your message, 2) Build your community, and 3) Create impact in the lives of your customers. (This will be explained further in the next three episodes... stay tuned!)
