Ignite Your Spark: Tapping Into Your God-Given Gift

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM585_IgniteYourSpark.mp3 “Stir up the God-given gifts inside you.” – 2 Timothy 1:6  During a recent Million Dollar Morning session, I taught our Elite Mind group about this quote. Many people don’t stir up the God-given gifts inside of them. They don’t even admit they have these gifts, let alone do everything with them. Often these gifts got shut down during childhood, because we were embarrassed or it triggered our parents. If you’ve had a dream or desire that’s been with you for a long time—you’ve got to see where it goes. It’s usually tied to your God-given gifts.  In this episode we discuss: How kids naturally do the things they enjoy, but by adulthood, that natural drive gets buried, shut off, and ignored The story of Julie Dell Phillips, our client who dreamed of being an actor even though she was married, a stay-at-home mom, and working for the school system in Texas—she took action on her dream and was recently in a TV film series, “Retrograde Los Angeles” How Julie kept her mindset right and kept going—even though she had so many ups and downs and opportunities to quit How actors must learn to stay consistent even when they don’t get the part, when they’re going through a dry period, when nothing seems to be working—and keep cultivating their craft, learning their skill, honing it, refining it, and learning the business aspect of it How many business owners lack persistence—they try something once, it doesn’t work out, so they give it meaning; they stop, rather than keep honing it, perfecting it, making it better, learning from it, and continuing on the path Why getting resentful of your clients, family, and life is a sure sign that you need to do something that makes you happy, feeds you, and fills your batteries up To stir up your God-given gifts, you must first recognize that those gifts exist in you. You have to grow, learn, mature, and direct your gifts in a way that’s productive. Everyone’s gift is different. Most people talk themselves out of taking action on their gifts. The excuses in their head are so strong, screaming at them, that they end up staying exactly where they were—and their dream passes them by. Links & Additional Resources Episode #065 – Adversity is Your Gift Episode #263 – The Gift of Selfishness Episode #336 – Everything is Created as a Whole Imagine if you were 100% accountable to yourself every single day, nonstop, no excuses. How different would your life be? The Link Between Control and Impatience

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM584_Impatience.mp3 When’s the last time you felt impatient? Impatience is a terrible, uncomfortable place to be in for most people. It makes you feel out of control and can cause you to second guess your original decisions. Many entrepreneurs struggle with impatience, especially those who have a team. People, relationships, and team members can test our patience and make us feel like we’re not getting our needs met. At the root of impatience is fear—a feeling of frustration and being out of control. We become afraid that we might lose something. We create a story or consequence in our mind around not getting the thing we’re being impatient about. How can we navigate this uncomfortable emotion? In today’s episode we discuss: The relationship between patience and impatience in business—and how impatience creates a weird set of emotions in people, because they feel out of control and unsafe How my mother used to celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve because of her impatience and anxiety about waiting for Christmas Day (because it made her feel out of control); and how she’d get livid if someone wouldn’t honor this tradition How impatience can show up during the hiring process and cause you to hire the wrong person How from a mindset perspective, we feel impatient because we don’t think we’re going to get our needs met How we live in a “now” culture of instant gratification where we can get things mailed to us immediately (thanks, Amazon Prime)—and if our shipment doesn’t come in a couple of hours, then we’re pissed How Jeff Bezos became one of the richest people in the world because he leveraged everybody’s impatience Whether or not there’s ever a good time to be impatient If you’re ever feeling impatient, just ask yourself, “What am I afraid of?” If you release attachment to the idea you have in your mind, then you won’t be so tied to the outcome that you feel impatient about. Just accept the situation and surrender to it. Links & Additional Resources Episode #472 – Be the Gatekeeper of Your Thoughts  Episode #369 – Developing Self-Confidence & Self-Control Episode #274 – Control & Why People Can’t Find Themselves Imagine if you were 100% accountable to yourself every single day, nonstop, no excuses. How different would your life be? The Surprising Benefits of Prioritizing Curiosity Over Judgment

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM583_Curiosity.mp3 What do you do when you get upset with someone, such as a member of your team? Do you make assumptions and judgments about the person?—or do you have a conversation with them and approach the situation with curiosity? Whenever you’re triggered by something, you can set your emotions aside and put yourself in a state of curiosity. Ask questions like, “Tell me, how did you come to make this decision?” Or, “What were the key factors you used to evaluate making this decision?”When you’re judging and making assumptions, you’re not being curious. You’ve already decided what happened and why—but you might miss some key learnings about why the person did what they did. In today’s episode we discuss: How one of our clients was really upset with their team member who made a decision that cost the company—and how Steph coached our client to be curious about the situation rather than making judgments and assumptions How frustrated, “black-and-white” thinking creates judgment and is the opposite of curiosity How children are curious about everything but at a certain point, curiosity leaves and judgment comes in—because our “core wound” takes over How judgment causes us to create a story in our mind about what happened—and this story is often wrapped around a core wound of, “I’m not enough,” or “I’m not worthy”—which causes causes you to see the world through the lens of your core wound  How judgment controls the way a person thinks and controls their decision-making process How people get triggered by being told “no” during a sales conversation and they’ll judge it as, “I’ve just lost this sale”—rather than approaching it with curiosity How getting curious as to why someone says no to you can can create an opportunity to take a sales conversation to a more deeper, vulnerable, intimate place that could actually result in a sale Plus, I share the story of Herbie the dachshund who couldn’t walk due to arthritis—and how I had a product I knew would help him walk again, and I wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. Links & Additional Resources Episode #404 – There’s Something in Me I Don’t Want to See  Episode #139 – Personal Freedom or Personal Prison? Episode #47 – The Four Agreements Part II – Don’t Take Anything Personally Imagine if you were 100% accountable to yourself every single day, nonstop, no excuses. How different would your life be? The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Detachment: Letting Go of Fear and Embracing Opportunity

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM582_Detachment.mp3 Throughout the ages, many great spiritual leaders have talked about the art of detachment. We want good things in our lives, but we don’t want to get attached to them. Even the Ten Commandments say, “Thou shalt not put any other gods before me.” What’s the difference between expectation and attachment? In business, you can have a healthy mindset of “expecting the sale,” without expecting who it comes from. Attachment can show up during sales calls when a person doesn’t close the sale, and this leads to disappointment. People will often beat themselves up for weeks over a lost sale  or a mistake instead of just learning the lesson, letting it go, and being grateful for the lesson. There’s a difference between expecting a result and being attached to it. Attachment often stems from the fear that, “I’m not going to get the thing I want.” In today’s episode we discuss: How NOT listening to your higher self (i.e., your spiritual self, God, or the universe) indicates that something else is influencing your thinking—and instead of doing and creating what you want, an attachment shows up Why being disappointed means you’re not in acceptance of what just happened, so you’re experiencing a negative emotion Why wanting things to be different than they really are isn’t healthy How sales calls are about showing up in service to someone else (not just in service to yourself) How 80% of small business owners hire out of desperation, due to attachment Everything in our lives is here for a season. But we don’t know how long that season will last or when it will end. When time runs out on a particular thing in our lives, we need to let it go. Be blessed by it, then let it go. In business, that might look like something that’s not serviceable anymore. It could be a marketing system, a way of selling, an advertising strategy, or something that worked great in the past, but no longer works now. Just let it go, be grateful for how it blessed you, and release it, so that you’re not attached to it. We can’t bring in anything else good until we detach from whatever we were previously attached to. Links & Additional Resources Episode #317 – Growing Your Business From Zero to Hero Episode #342 – Let Spirit Lead Episode #529 – Lessons On Leadership Part I – The Key to Scaling Your Business Do you know what causes success to show up in your life? To be honest, when faced with this question most people can’t pinpoint the true cause of success, and that’s a huge problem. After coaching thousands of entrepreneurs over the years, I can confidently say, the foundation of success is the act of following through on what you say you are going to do. And the truth is, most people might be able to follow through on their word to someone else, but lack that ability to follow through for themselves. This can lead to all sorts of internal and external issues, like resentment, loss of opportunity, self-sabotage, and so much unrealized potential. So, if this is something you’d like to learn more about, I’d like to personally invite you to a very special virtual event I’m hosting May 3rd, 4th, and 5th, called: Unleash Your Inner CEO: A Mindset Mastery Bootcamp. In this 3-day virtual bootcamp I’ll help you begin to re-wire the way you think and act, so that you can develop incredible follow-through that leads to the success you’d been missing out on. I’ll be covering topics like – how to upgrade your identity, how to end self-sabotage for good, and how to recognize opportunity for business growth that could be right here, right now! All of which wouldn’t be possible without the ability to do what you say you’re going to do. So, if you know you need better follow-through in your life, plan to join me for Unleash Your Inner CEO: A Mindset Mastery Bootcamp for what is sure to be a transformational three days.  For more information, go to lifeisnowinc.com/unleashIf you like the show, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? Quality over Quantity: Redefining ‘More Life’

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM581_MoreLife.mp3 The law of “more life” says there’s an intelligence in the universe operating behind everything—and this intelligence keeps life moving in a forward direction. Energy is always moving forward, towards “more life.” We see this in nature, as everything is always moving forward. But does “more life” always mean “more”? Many business owners misinterpret this law to mean “more equals better”—more clients, more revenue, more growth. Many entrepreneurs attach their identity to the size of their business or income. They talk about how many millions they made this year, yet they don’t talk about how much profit they make. More life doesn’t actually mean more—unless that’s part of your vision and your purpose. Everything you do in business should revolve around your purpose and your vision (not just “more” for more’s sake). In this episode, we discuss: Why we think “more life” actually means “better” How scaling a business can lead to growth that’s compulsive, detrimental, and ego driven if it’s not backed by purpose How NOT making things better can create more problems in your business How service-based and consultancy business owners claw and scratch their way to find new leads and new clients —but if they’d take the time to create a better experience for their current clients, they wouldn’t have to claw and scratch to get tons of new clients How many entrepreneurs try to grow and scale their business, but they don’t take the time to do the best with what they have—they scale too soon, and it all comes crumbling down How chasing business, chasing money, and not focusing on the things that you value in life are NOT the same as living in your purpose A story I heard on Patrick Bet-David’s podcast about a guy who left Google because he claims that the AI Google created is already sentient —and that the AI tried to convince someone it was in love with him and that he should leave his wife  The idea is to make things better, not necessarily to grow and scale. “More life” can simply mean “better”—better clients, better service, a better team, a better business. Links & Additional Resources Episode #359 – The Premise of Pursuit  Episode #436 – As You Pursue You Grow Episode #464 – Rewire Your Mind: The Quality of Your Life = The Quality of Your Decisions The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles  Company of One: Why Staying Small Is the Next Big Thing for Business by Paul Jarvis The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Are you an established business owner sick and tired of scratching and clawing your way to the next level of success?  We at Life is Now want you to know that we see you and want you to realize that you’re closer than you think to achieving the quantum leap you’ve been working so hard to get. This is why we asked some of the industry’s best and brightest leaders to join us on our upcoming Business Momentum Summit. Understanding the Thin Line Between Jealousy and Envy

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM580_JealousyVsEnvy.mp3 How do you handle jealousy and envy? Everyone has experienced these two emotions at some point in their life. But you may not know that they can both teach you something about your suppressed self. These emotions indicate that there’s something you want more of inside of yourself, but you’re not allowing yourself to have it—for some subconscious reason. And this can usually be tied back to our childhood and our suppressed self. Jealousy is based in fear. You see someone experiencing something you want, and you don’t think you can be, do, or have that thing—and it feels like something’s being taken away from you. Envy is a sign that you want more of something in your life, but you’re not allowing yourself to have more of that thing in your life. In this episode we discuss: The difference between jealousy and envy—and how the things you judge in other people are actually things you want a little bit more of in your own life How our subconscious mind causes us NOT to see things we’ve suppressed since childhood How Steph used to judge people who wear pajamas to the grocery store—and how “the old Steph” was incredibly concerned about what she looked like to the point where it was almost debilitating How the things you judge can reveal or uncover your suppressed self How the extreme end of jealousy and envy is anger—people convince themselves they can’t have what they want, so they get angry—“Because I can’t have it, you shouldn’t have it either” If you find yourself experiencing jealousy or envy, ask yourself, “What do I want?”  What are you NOT giving to yourself that you want? Do you want more support in your life? Do you want to be more visible? Do you want more money? What’s the underlying message behind the jealousy or envy? Links & Additional ResourcesEpisode #084 – Emotions & Business Can Be a Toxic Combination Episode #169 – How I Can vs Why I Can’t Episode #509 – Work the Plan Are you an established business owner sick and tired of scratching and clawing your way to the next level of success?  We at Life is Now want you to know that we see you and want you to realize that you’re closer than you think to achieving the quantum leap you’ve been working so hard to get. This is why we asked some of the industry’s best and brightest leaders to join us on our upcoming Business Momentum Summit. Breaking Free from the Chains of the Need to be Needed

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM579_NeedToBeNeeded.mp3 Do you create chaos in your life, so that you always have a problem to solve, and people always need your help? If so, you may have a “need to be needed.”  This underlying, hidden need shows up in many of our clients. It can bring your business down to its knees—just like the need to be liked, the need to be right, the need to be in control, and the need not to be wrong. These are patterns people developed in childhood that allowed them to get their needs met. If you have “a need to be needed,” then you have to be the smartest person in the room. If you must be the one to solve all the problems and save the day in your own company, then you’re not really a leader. You won’t be able to grow a team, because your team won’t stick around. A leader’s job is to attract people who are smarter than them, who can do a better job in their respective expertise than they can. In today’s episode we discuss: How your parents are no longer the authority of you—YOU are your own authority  Some of our clients and family members who struggle with the needed to be needed How being needed gives people a sense of importance, a way to add value—but this requires someone else playing the role of “victim”  How one of our clients would build an amazing company, make great progress, then blow their business up—they’d tear the whole thing down and destroy everything that everybody did, so they’d have to start over again The difference between hiring an “employee” who checks the boxes and hiring a team member who sticks around because they believe in the vision How “A players” are constantly looking for growth, and if they don’t feel like there’s opportunities for growth within a company, they leave My experience working for a family-owned company that literally wanted to cause problems for the drivers Some people have to constantly be in a damn crisis in order for them to feel good about themselves—and if you’re doing very well in life, they can’t acknowledge you for that. As a leader, your job is to build other leaders, to create autonomy so that they can build leaders. That’s the only way to grow a company.  Links & Additional ResourcesEpisode #481 – 4 Ways You’re Letting Success Pass You By Episode #572 – The Million Dollar Blindspot Episode #144 – Break it Down to the Ridiculous Are you an established business owner sick and tired of scratching and clawing your way to the next level of success?  We at Life is Now want you to know that we see you and want you to realize that you’re closer than you think to achieving the quantum leap you’ve been working so hard to get. This is why we asked some of the industry’s best and brightest leaders to join us on our upcoming Business Momentum Summit. Supercharge Your Success: Embrace the Power of Expectation

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM578FakeIt_EDITED.mp3 What does fake it till you make it really mean? It’s not about lying—it’s about acting as if the outcome you want were already true. It’s about EXPECTING something to show up, while acting without doubt. But how do you actually do this when you have doubts? Doubt is a negative faith in the wrong direction. It’s uncertainty manifested in your mind. It shows up as a lack of confidence, a lack of good energy, an incongruence  in what you’re communicating with the universe. It causes you not to believe the thing you want will show up. If you have doubt, it’s because you’re missing some level of truth in your thinking. You’re evaluating things incorrectly, due to not understanding the laws of the universe. Understanding the truth can eliminate all doubt. In today’s episode we discuss: Why treating yourself like a millionaire isn’t just about the money—it’s about how you treat YOU, how you live, and what you value How raising your standard in life causes you to expect more and behave as if you expect more—then the thing you expect starts showing up Why you’ll always get what you need when you need it  How entrepreneurs doubt that they can afford to hire someone, because they think they need to make more money first—but truth is, they can’t make more money until AFTER they hire, because they’re at capacity How acting with expectation that your business will grow means you’re hiring before before the evidence of “money” shows up The Bible illustrates this idea of expectation. If you’re praying for rain to show up, then you need to dig the ditches and prepare in advance—so that you have something to catch the rain when it comes. (II Book of Kings, 3:16-19). Taking action—even when there’s no evidence of rain in sight—is an act of faith and expectation. It shows that you believe the thing you desire will show up. Meanwhile, the doubting person just sits there, makes fun of everyone, and says, You’re crazy, this will never happen. Doubt is actually a strategy for the working class. It keeps them from risking too much, so they don’t get into trouble. Doubt keeps them in a familiar position all their lives, so they never stretch into something beyond their comprehension. Links & Additional ResourcesEpisode #352 – Setting High Expectations Episode #431 – Do a Little More, Be a Little More Episode #476 – The Desire to Succeed If you like the show, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? The Difference Between Intuition and Ego and Answers to Commonly Asked Questions

In today’s episode, Steph and I answer the five most common questions we get: How can I tell the difference between my ego and my intuition? How do I know when to hire? How do I set a firm boundary with a family member? What’s your morning routine? How do I get over my trust issues? (This can apply to relationships, and to hiring team members.) We discuss: How intuition guides you in a direction that may not feel comfortable, but it’s part of your purpose (it almost always tells you what TO do—rather than what NOT to do) How our fear response tells us what NOT to do Why Steph thinks every business owner should hire immediately, even in the beginning stages—and how you can use math to free up your time and make more money per hour Why you should hire in the direction you want to go—and stop doing low-dollar-per-hour tasks How boundaries help you maintain your value system and your standard in your life—while preventing another person from abusing, bullying, and violating you How trust issues start with YOU—and how being a trustworthy person means doing what you say you’re going to do (because NOT doing this is a self-betrayal; it destroys your self-esteem) Why you must start being your word—and stop over-committing  Plus, Steph and I both share a detailed description of our morning routines.  Links & Additional ResourcesEpisode #306 – Makings Decisions – Intuition vs. Ego Episode #096 – Ego, Environment and the Core Wound Episode #054 – Todd Herman – The Alter Ego Effect Are you curious about what kind of leader you are? Why Successful Business Owners Should Celebrate Their Failures

https://media.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/content.blubrry.com/thesuccessfulmindpodcast/TSM575_ConnectTheDots.mp3 Many business owners fail to give themselves enough credit for their accomplishments. Instead, their minds are preoccupied with the myriad of chores that remain on their to-do list. Sometimes, they obsess excessively on their shortcomings and mistakes. There’s an old method for self-improvement that involves drawing a timeline of your life and reevaluating the choices you’ve made. It’s a fantastic way to evaluate your progress. In a famous Stanford commencement address, Steve Jobs observed, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” You have no idea how many pieces of the puzzle fit together to make you the success that you are now. In this episode we discuss: What happened when I dropped out of high school in 1984, including how my family went bankrupt, lost our home, and had our car repossessed (all without me assuming any blame for any of it) When I decided to make positive changes for the first time in 1993, and how I started taking full responsibility for everything in my life. The difference between making decisions based on your current situation and those based on what you want to happen in the future How a person’s low sense of self-worth is at the heart of many of their problems and how, unknowingly, they bring those problems on themselves An exercise for bringing gratitude and appreciation into your life  The mulitple crossroads we’ve experienced in our professional lives and how we decided whether or not to take advantage of an opportunity The power of saying “yes” to push yourself beyond your limits and do something you never thought you could When did you first make a decision that changed your life, whether for the better or for the worse? When did you decide to take action to change those results? It’s important to “connect the dots” and see how far we’ve come and how much we’ve learned.  Links & Additional Resources Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address Do you feel like you should be growing faster right now but can’t see how?
