How To Overcome Failures & Setbacks - With Warwick Fairfax
How do you go back from failure and build a life of purpose and significance? Nick is in conversation with a man who has done just that, Warwick Fairfax Founder of Crucible Leadership grew up as the heir to a multi-generational media group but following his takeover, the company failed and as Warwick explains it was a crucible moment in his life because ultimately things don’t happen to you, they happen for you In this compelling listen, he candidly discusses the lessons he learnt and how he found his purpose along with success and significance because crucible moments in life are tough but they don’t have to be the end of your story Find out now if you’re building a high-value, exitable business (even if you have no immediate plans to sell it). You’ll get an instant PDF report with powerful insights specifically tailored to your business in just 4 minutes. https://highvalueexit.scoreapp.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS I didn’t grow up wondering what I was going to do in life it was always set for me With hindsight as soon as I launched the takeover, it was doomed to fail I didn’t listen to the good advice, people said it was a bad idea but because I didn’t want to hear it I didn’t listen and went to the people who told me what I wanted to hear I felt as I was in a gilded cage and when it ended it was very painful. Things don’t happen to you, they happen for you Wealth doesn’t make you happy, there is no number that will make you happy but if you use money to help others it changes everything We are only fulfilled when we serve a bigger purpose, a higher cause or serve others Significance can be defined as a life of purpose dedicated to serving others, this is about a higher purpose Most businesses that have long term success have an aspect of altruism If you want to be successful long term you need to tie your vision to doing something that will make an impact in the world and links to your values and beliefs I’m a great believer that a life of significance will not only make you feel more fulfilled it will in the long term it will make you more successful The crucible moment for me was losing a 150-year-old two-billion-dollar business and the process of coming back was drop of grace by drop of grace, brick by brick Understand your values and beliefs and find a calling that fits with that In the business world, people don’t like talking about failure but its real and people connect with it The smart entrepreneurs are the ones who learn from their mistakes and want to do it better next time BEST MOMENTS ‘I went there and did exactly what you shouldn’t be doing’ ‘Success and significance are not at odds with each other they can be in harmony’ ‘Your life is not defined by your worst day or mistake’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business – scaleup.vip/podcast Join the free Scale Up Your Business community: scaleup.vip/community Take the Predictable Growth Assessment™, to measure your current business performance and show you where to focus next to get to where you want to be: https://scaleup.vip/PredictableGrowthAssessment Scale Up Your Business Global Crucible Leadership https://www.linkedin.com/in/warwick-fairfax-8902081 ABOUT THE HOST Nick Bradley is a renowned entrepreneur, investor, speaker, and business growth expert. Selling Your Business For Maximum Value - With John Warrillow
John Warrillow founder of The Value Builder System and best-selling author talks to Nick about what it takes to build a value business for exit He discusses the nuances that really make the difference to acquirers and why top-line revenue is important but only one of the metrics that make the difference when selling a business This is a masterclass in understanding more about the elements that are valued by acquirers and how to effectively position your business when selling it Find out now if you’re building a high-value, exitable business (even if you have no immediate plans to sell it). You’ll get an instant PDF report with powerful insights specifically tailored to your business in just 4 minutes. https://highvalueexit.scoreapp.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS We’ve moved away from the transaction model to the reoccurring business model and this is reflected in the valuations of companies Low debt and low-interest rates currently mean there will continue to be pressure upwards The Value Builder System is driven by eight unique metrics which are proven to be important to acquirers Top line revenue growth is important but there are other metrics that make a difference Most SME’s sell lots of things to a small number of people, the valuable SME’s sell a few things to lots of people Growth potential is important because it’s about what the company can become in the future The Switzerland structure is about the company not being dependant on a particular supplier or customer The point to sell a company is when you reach the freedom point. The desire for personal freedom and independence is a common underlying thread The reasons owners regret making a sale are focused around push factors such as illness, you need to offset your push factors with pull factors Pull factors are the things you want to do when you have exited the business When you have lots of pull factors valuation is not the dominant factor When an acquirer purchases a business they write two cheques, one to you and one to fund the working capital of the business Having a positive cash flow cycle is an important part of the picture when selling a business BEST MOMENTS ‘We are part of the subscription economy now’ ‘If you sell a few things to lots of people you can build a valuable company’ ‘The acquirer is toeing the start line of their journey when you are looking to exit they are looking to grow’ ‘Savvy sellers are thinking about the narrative of their company’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business – scaleup.vip/podcast Join the free Scale Up Your Business community: scaleup.vip/community Take the Predictable Growth Assessment™, to measure your current business performance and show you where to focus next to get to where you want to be: https://scaleup.vip/PredictableGrowthAssessment BUILT TO SELL RESOURCES Built to Sell Scale Up Your Business Resources ABOUT THE HOST Nick Bradley is a renowned entrepreneur, investor, speaker, and business growth expert. Become The Leader You Would Follow - With Scott Jeffrey Miller
Nick is in conversation with Scott Jeffery Miller, leadership maestro, multi bestselling author, podcast host, leadership coach and global keynote speaker. In the world today every business is both a people company and a technology company so getting the leadership and the culture right has never been more important and now as the world moves forward again everyone is reassessing what’s important to them with people wanting meaningful work in a winning team within a culture of trust Nick and Scott discuss how in any business you need to begin with the right leaders, those who understand that their job is to achieve results within and through other people, if you want to create a culture of trust that people want to work in. Find out now if you’re building a high-value, exitable business (even if you have no immediate plans to sell it). You’ll get an instant PDF report with powerful insights specifically tailored to your business in just 4 minutes. https://highvalueexit.scoreapp.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS People don’t quit their jobs they quit bad bosses and corrupt cultures Culture is the way the vast majority of people behave most of the time. Culture is how we get stuff done and is everything People are not the most important asset in a company it’s the relationships between those people that form the culture. It’s always about the relationships To build culture you need to get very clear on the behaviours you want to see exhibited and the decisions how people treat each other Leaders are the lynchpin of every culture so you need to start with the behaviour and mindset of your leaders To be an effective leader you need to understand that it’s your job to achieve results within, through other people, you have to build capability in others There is a difference between efficient and effective. You cannot be efficient with people, you can only be effective Most of us spend our lives fulfilling the identities others put on us, your job is to go out and create your own identity Vulnerability is being confident enough to talk about what you do and don’t know so that others are encouraged to do this as well Humble leaders are more concerned with what is right rather than being right There is a new type of leadership that is about being relatable and having the vulnerability to be confident enough to share what they know and what they don’t know Great leaders love their people enough to have a high courage conversation, with some diplomacy, to save people from themselves BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s a group of unimpeachably trustworthy people who are passionate about changing the world’ ‘When you have the right people with the right mindset in leadership it’s much easier to get fifteen hundred others to follow’ ‘What cannot be replicated is culture, people come to companies and stay with companies because of the culture’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business – scaleup.vip/podcast Join the free Scale Up Your Business community: scaleup.vip/community Take the Predictable Growth Assessment™, to measure your current business performance and show you where to focus next to get to where you want to be: https://scaleup.vip/PredictableGrowthAssessment Scott Jeffrey Miller ABOUT THE HOST Nick Bradley is a renowned entrepreneur, investor, speaker, and business growth expert. Cultivating Relationships to Maximize Well-Being and Boost Business Performance - With Jen Fisher
How do you design your day to integrate work and life in a way that works for your wellbeing and health? Jen Fisher, Deloitte’s chief well-being officer in the US empowers people to prioritise themselves so that they can optimise their performance and in this episode, she talks about how to manage your life and work in a way that works for you and why in reality balance is about the rhythms over time She also talks with Nick about the pros and cons of technology and what the future may look like if we effectively use technology to enhance and augment our human relationships Find out now if you’re building a high-value, exitable business (even if you have no immediate plans to sell it). You’ll get an instant PDF report with powerful insights specifically tailored to your business in just 4 minutes. https://highvalueexit.scoreapp.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS There is no need for life and work to be balanced it’s about integration and managing your life and work in a way that works for you, it’s about rhythms over time In some ways technology has had a positive impact meaning we can connect from wherever we are in the world As humans, we haven’t adapted to the technology and taken control of it Technology will never be able to do some of the things humans do that make them uniquely human We need to make a shift about what we reward in the culture of the workplace We need to look at the right way to effectively use technology The first step in changing organisational culture is to take a step back and identify what is holding back wellbeing The people who you work with and come into contact with every day are those who have the biggest impact on your wellbeing Leaders and managers can create the right environment but ultimately everyone has personal accountability for their own well-being and health It’s important to always engage your workforce and asking them will create its own uplift because people feel heard Empower your teams to ask the right questions and discuss what they need Going to the office should be about collaboration with others There is always going to be a need for face to face meetings because humans are social creatures and need the connection. We need to use technology to enhance, sustain and augment those relationships BEST MOMENTS ‘Burnout shouldn’t be the price we pay for success’ ‘We want to understand how people are feeling and how supported they feel’ ‘The future will be hybrid and it’s about how we come together in the moments’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business – scaleup.vip/podcast Join the free Scale Up Your Business community: scaleup.vip/community Take the Predictable Growth Assessment™, to measure your current business performance and show you where to focus next to get to where you want to be: https://scaleup.vip/PredictableGrowthAssessment Work Better Together - Jen Fisher & Anh Phillips Work Well Podcast Series ABOUT THE HOST Nick Bradley is a renowned entrepreneur, investor, speaker, and business growth expert. The Playbook to Fast Business Growth with David B Horne
David B Horne, founder of the Add then Multiply consultancy who work with business founders who want to grow fast and author of the award-winning book by the same name talks with Nick about how small business can think like big businesses They discuss some of the many ways deals can be structured and what David looks for in the businesses he works with, creating impact beyond growth and the creation of wealth David also discusses the mission of Funding Focus who work to level the playing field for female and under-represented entrepreneurs when raising capital. Find out now if you’re building a high-value, exitable business (even if you have no immediate plans to sell it). You’ll get an instant PDF report with powerful insights specifically tailored to your business in just 4 minutes. https://highvalueexit.scoreapp.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS The share for share structure means an exchange of shares with potentially a small capital payment Agglomeration is creating an entity to be floated on the stock exchange. You are putting your business into the group for the expected payday When it’s a private company you can control who you offer your shares to, when it’s a listed vehicle anyone can become a shareholder When a company is listed on a public exchange there is never any dispute over the value of the company When a company is well managed and growing you have virtually limitless pools of capital you can access I like to go deep inside the business and deep inside the head of the business owner to understand their motivation, what they want to do and why I want to understand what people are going to do with the money I like to work with people who have an idea about what they want to do when they have grown and made their money I like to see people who are aligned with the UN global goals and know that if I’m helping people to earn tons of money they will do something useful with it I prefer to work growing businesses rather than restructuring. It’s about the steps along the road, understanding the flow and integration steps to grow Its big company thinking for smaller companies who may think it’s not accessible to them or realistic and is an underleveraged opportunity The level at which you can scale a business is about the mindset and understanding of the founder BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s fascinating the number of ways you can structure deals’ ‘There aren’t enough smaller businesses thinking about this’ ‘It’s about impact as well as wealth creation’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business – scaleup.vip/podcast Join the free Scale Up Your Business community: scaleup.vip/community Take the Predictable Growth Assessment™, to measure your current business performance and show you where to focus next to get to where you want to be: https://scaleup.vip/PredictableGrowthAssessment dbh@addthenmultiply.com Add then Multiply by David B Horne Focus Funding ABOUT THE HOST Nick Bradley is a renowned entrepreneur, investor, speaker, and business growth expert. How To Scale Yourself So You Can Scale Everything Else! - With Stephen Scoggins
Stephen Scoggins is a multimillionaire serial entrepreneur with six businesses who went from homelessness and a chaotic past to a nine-figure business leader He discusses how there are moments in life that you think are going to cause you pain but they are actually there to shape you and why when in the moment things can seem insurmountable they can be overcome if you understand how to move from being stuck to unstoppable. Stephen also explains how if you are building any business you need to also be building yourself and be intentionally curious every day if you want to achieve impact and legacy Find out now if you’re building a high-value, exitable business (even if you have no immediate plans to sell it). You’ll get an instant PDF report with powerful insights specifically tailored to your business in just 4 minutes. https://highvalueexit.scoreapp.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS Going from stuck to unstoppable is about resilience People get used to living their life and forget that they can create a new one So much more is possible but you have to learn to look at things differently You have to be willing to do today what others wont to have tomorrow what others don’t You need to be intentional and always make others feel seen, heard, valued, and appreciated Principles govern promises and when you understand this you can have an impact Ask yourself – what’s right?, what’s confusing?, what’s missing and what’s wrong? In all areas of your life What’s right - you amplify, the things that are missing you discover, find, and explore. The things that are confusing you clarify through outside advice and mentorship The things that are wrong are very rarely wrong, they are more likely to be misdiagnosed and from there you can shape the principles that move you from being stuck When you are the real you, you expel from around you the people who are holding you back and attract those people who can help you move forward You need to treat everyone around you as a customer and be intentional about finding out what they want and how you can help them You need to be intentionally curious in your life and you only find purpose if you are working on it every day and being intentional When you are building businesses you need to build yourself as well BEST MOMENTS ‘It takes curiosity to create something’ ‘My number one principle now is impact over income’ ‘My superpower is I can see potential in people that they can’t see in themselves VALUABLE RESOURCES Scale Up Your Business – scaleup.vip/podcast Join the free Scale Up Your Business community: scaleup.vip/community Take the Predictable Growth Assessment™, to measure your current business performance and show you where to focus next to get to where you want to be: https://scaleup.vip/PredictableGrowthAssessment https://stephenscoggins.com/transformulive/ Stephen Scoggins Instagram ABOUT THE HOST Nick Bradley is a renowned entrepreneur, investor, speaker, and business growth expert. How To Control Your Attention & Choose Your Life - With Nir Eyal
Nir Eyal has spoken on some of the world’s biggest stages and his expertise focuses on the intersection of psychology, technology, and business. He is a behavioural designer who works with companies to build the kind of products that build good habits in people’s lives. He discusses how distraction and traction can be applied to anything in life and how anyone can learn the habits and tactics that mean they can be "indistractable". What do you think is distracting you? Nir shares great content about why it might not be what you thought, and how to build habits and tactics that focus on traction, in a fascinating episode that every entrepreneur should listen to. Find out now if you’re building a high-value, exitable business (even if you have no immediate plans to sell it). You’ll get an instant PDF report with powerful insights specifically tailored to your business in just 4 minutes. https://highvalueexit.scoreapp.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS Focus is one of the things people struggle with the most but we can all build good habits. You can’t buy customer retention and engagement it has to be designed into the product. You need to understand the fundamentals of how to bring people back and the psychology of habits. The opposite of distraction is traction. Traction is an action that pulls you towards what you said you were going to do, things you do with intent, things in line with your values that help you become the person you want to become. Distraction is any action that pulls you further away from what you planned to do, further from your intentions and values, and the person you want to become. Distraction and traction can be applied to anything in your life. We allow ourselves to be distracted by prioritising the urgent and easy over the important and hard work because we rationalise it all needs to be completed anyway. Anything that is not what you planned to do with your time in advance is a distraction. Traction is what you have planned to do. 10% of distraction comes through external triggers, 90% are internal triggers - an uncomfortable internal feeling that we want to escape such as boredom, loneliness, stress, anxiety, and fatigue. If you don’t learn how to control your emotions so they are serving you not controlling you, you will always be distracted. Learn to master your internal triggers, make time for traction, hack back your external triggers, and prevent distraction with pacts - making a pre-commitment to not be distracted. The human species is not designed to be happy all the time. We are designed evolutionarily to be perpetually perturbed. The solution is to move towards traction and away from distraction. The way we talk to ourselves is absolutely critical. Visualise and affirm not the outcome but what you will do when you are potentially distracted from doing the thing that will get you the outcome. BEST MOMENTS ‘We have a whole generation of entrepreneurs, who have all the intellect, the insight, and know exactly what they need to do; who are running real fast in the wrong direction, spending all their time with busyness not business.’ ‘Everything is a distraction unless it’s something you have planned.’ ‘It completely changed my life. Now I have personal integrity and I’m indistractable.' ‘Time management is pain management.'
