Robert Misik in conversation with James Galbraith The global Covid-19 pandemic has effected a revolution in world economic affairs. The liberal (or more properly, neo-liberal) economic systems of Europe, North America and Latin America have handled the crisis poorly. China, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan and Cuba have done remarkably well. Why is this so? What does it portend? James Galbraith argues that it was precisely the most celebrated features of the liberal Western systems – decentralization, post-industrialism, the hegemony of finance and advanced technologies, reliance on markets, willingness to trade public health against economic objectives – that brought them low in the face of the pandemic. Success occurred in those countries that mounted an immediate, centralized public health response, that could effectively lock down in whole or part, that were willing to sacrifice all economic activity temporarily to public health, and that dominated the production of basic manufactures such as personal protective equipment and so were able immediately to underpin behavioral mandates with material capacity. It was a matter, in other words, of whether it was possible to mobilize the whole society to protect public health, or not. Looking forward, the new Biden administration in the United States will launch a large, coordinated public health initiative, together with patchwork fiscal assistance and income support, to get the United States through the immediate crisis. Success is far from certain. And in the aftermath, even if the pandemic is contained over the next year, the American (and European) economic model will face a profound restructuring in three major areas: the advanced sectors, which provide US strength in world trade; the services sectors, which provide the jobs; and the financial sector, as unpayable private debts will have to be written down. James Kenneth Galbraith is an American economist, with a chair at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, the University of Texas at Austin. He has advised political campaigns in America and governments in China and Greece. He served in the early 1980s as Executive Director of the Joint Economic Committee of the United States Congress. His father, John Kenneth Galbraith, was one of the most celebrated economists of all time, and a participant and adviser in US governments from Roosevelt through Kennedy and Johnson. Previously he was the Director of the Middle East  Center at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars  (2015-2017). Currently he also serves as the chair of the Academic  Committee on the Board of Trustees of the American University in Iraq,  Sulaimani. Wer Politik mit Angst macht, der glaubt immer zu gewinnen. Das gilt für Donald Trump in den USA genauso wie für die große Schar der Rechtspopulisten in Europa. Was an Beleidigungen und Ausgrenzungen von Minderheiten, an Verlogenheiten noch vor wenigen Jahren undenkbar war, ist heute in den Mainstream vorgedrungen. Für Lügen muss man sich nicht mehr entschuldigen, sie werden als Mittel zum Protest gegen sogenannten Eliten geschätzt. Zwischen Empathie und Angst – Flucht,  Migration und die Zukunft von Asyl    „Widerlegt sowohl ‚linke‘ wie ‚rechte‘ Klischees der Migrationsdebatte.“  Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung    „Ob dieses Buch etwas bewirkt? Dabei  wird die Diskussion dominiert von Schlagworten, falschen  Tatsachenbehauptungen und Scheinlösungen. Gerald Knaus erklärt in seinem  im Oktober 2020 im Piper-Verlag erschienenen Buch »Welche Grenzen  brauchen wir?«, worum es tatsächlich geht, und zeigt, dass humane  Grenzen möglich sind.  Der Migrationsexperte, dessen Analysen Regierungen in ganz Europa  beeinflusst haben, erläutert, welche Grundsatzprobleme wir dafür lösen  müssten und wie aus abstrakten Prinzipien mehrheitsfähige umsetzbare  Politik werden kann. Er erklärt außerdem, warum das vielen  Gesellschaften schwerfällt und selbst viele Bürger mit widersprüchlichen  Emotionen ringen – hier Empathie, da Angst vor Kontrollverlust – und  wie eine Politik, die Fakten und Emotionen ernst nimmt, möglich wird.    Gerald Knaus, Soziologe und Migrationsforscher, ist Gründungsdirektor  der Denkfabrik European Stability Initiative (ESI). Er berät Regierungen  und Institutionen in Europa bei den Themen Flucht, Migration und  Menschenrechte. Gerald Knaus studierte Philosophie, Politik und  Internationale Beziehungen in Oxford, Brüssel und Bologna, ist  Gründungsmitglied des European Council on Foreign Relations und war für  fünf Jahre Associate Fellow am Carr Center for Human Rights Policy der  Harvard Kennedy School – John F. Kennedy School of Governance in den  USA. THE DEFICIT MYTH Why states can – and must – afford substantial economic stimulus programs    Stephanie Kelton, US-American economist  in conversation with Robert Misik, author and journalist   The global economy is in a serious crisis, with governments launching programs to rescue companies and stabilize the economy. Budget deficits are reaching substantial amounts. Are government bankruptcies or hyperinflation looming on the horizon?  Stephanie Kelton takes a refreshing, systematic –and eye-opening – perspective at government spending. The question, she argues, is not what a state may afford, as unlike private households it can afford anything. The question is what a state is supposed to deliver. The wealth of a society is measured in terms of prosperity, job security, the production of goods, and inclusive social welfare of all citizens. Economies cannot "save themselves rich", they can only "invest richly". Therefore, a sole focus on the budgetary deficits is misplaced. Globally, we observe a new macroeconomic paradigm emerging; one, which considers "budgetary discipline" as secondary to impact. The "Modern Monetary Theory", of which Stephanie Kelton is the most prominent representative, constitutes a radical manifestation of this new consensus with a strong potential to shake up the political agenda. Having worked for Bernie Sanders in the US Senate and in her present function as one of Joe Biden's economic advisors Kelton is well positioned to influence decision makers.  Stephanie Kelton´s book "The Deficit Myth" has been on the New York Times bestseller list for months.   Sephanie Kelton is an US-American economist. One of the leading representatives of Modern Monetary Theory, she is also a supporter of the idea of job guarantees. During the primaries for the US presidential election in 2016, she was one of the advisors and supporters of Bernie Sanders' campaign. Before that, she was already his chief economist on the Senate Budget Committee.
