When we lose someone we love, when we suffer loss or defeat, when catastrophe strikes—war, famine, pandemic—we go in search of consolation. Once the province of priests and philosophers, the language of consolation has largely vanished from our modern vocabulary, and the places where it was offered, houses of religion, are often empty. Rejecting the solace of ancient religious texts, humanity since the sixteenth century has increasingly placed its faith in science, ideology, and the therapeutic. How do we console each other and ourselves in an age of unbelief? Iraq voted on October 10th of last year, in snap elections meant to address the causes of the nationwide protests of 2019 which toppled the previous government. Lengthy government formation processes are not unusual in Iraq, however, it seems that the elections of 2021 brought to an end the informal agreements – also within confessional and ethnical groups – which dominated the political landscape since the first elections in 2005 after Saddam Hussein’s fall. What could have been seen as a hope for normalization of politics in Iraq, led to a constitutional impasse and threatens the stability of the country.      Harith Hasan is a senior researcher at the Emirates Policy Center and non-resident fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center. For several years Kathleen Stock has been in the centre of a storm that is raging in Britain: Should gender be defined by self-identification or birth? Is sex a biological fact or can it be changed? For her point of view on the necessity for public female spaces and for stating that transgender women can never be women she drew heated criticism from the transgender community.  In the talk with Tessa Szyszkowitz Kathleen Stock will explain the theory of her book Material Girls: Why Reality Matters for Feminism. One of the central questions: Should discrimination law prioritise protecting gender identity – crucial to trans people – or biological sex, on which women’s rights have historically depended? For Stock the answer is clear: Transgender women are a legal fiction. But she also argues that both sides in this debate – transgender activists and gender-critical feminists like her should become more non-binary.   Kathleen Stock is an author and writer. Her book Material Girls: Why Reality Matters for Feminism offers a offers a broad discussion of gender identity theory. She quit her position as professor of philosophy at the University of Sussex last October. She felt bullied by a campaign of transgender activists.   Tessa Szyszkowitz is a journalist, writer and historian currently working for Falter, profil & Cicero. Her last book was Echte Engländer, Britain & Brexit (2018). Sie hat eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben in der Wiener Stadtregierung und gilt als unerschrockene „Macherin“, eine Eigenschaft, die Kathrin Gaal wohl gut gebrauchen kann. Denn als Wohnbaustadträtin muss sie Wohnraum für eine rasant wachsende Stadt schaffen. Um rund 200.000 Einwohner ist die Stadt alleine in den vergangenen zehn Jahren gewachsen. Ganze Stadtteile müssen neu entwickelt werden. Das schafft immer auch Konflikte. Eine Quadratur des Kreises: Alle Verfahren müssen berücksichtigt werden, die Bauten sollen auf der Höhe der technischen Innovation sein, Dämmung, Heizung usw. müssen ihren Beitrag zur Dekarbonisierung leisten – und schnell muss das natürlich auch gehen, und all das auch noch vor dem Hintergrund steigender Immobilien-, Boden- und Baukosten. Wie kriegt man das hin? Wie dreht man an diesem Rad?  Gaals Aufgaben sind neben Wohnen, Wohnbau und Stadterneuerungen auch die Frauenagenden. Mit Einsetzen der Pandemie wurde schnell deutlich, dass Frauen sich durch Homeoffice und Homeschooling mehrfach belastet und zum großen Teil überlastet fühlten. Alte Rollenbilder haben sich durch Corona wieder verfestigt. Und die Gewalt gegenüber Frauen ist deutlich gestiegen. Gaal ist überzeugt: „Frauen zählen zu den Verliererinnen der Krise.“ Mit der Frauenpolitik der Bundesregierung geht sie hart ins Gericht. Aber was ist eine zeitgemäße sozialdemokratische feministische Politik?  Kathrin Gaal, 1976 geboren, begann ihre politische Laufbahn bei der Favoritner SPÖ-Frauenorganisation. Von 2001 bis 2005 war die Juristin Bezirksrätin in Favoriten, 2005 wurde sie Gemeinderätin, seit 2011 ist sie Vorsitzende der SPÖ Favoriten. Who ended the British Empire? Priyamvada Gopal, who teaches at Churchill College in Cambridge, puts her focus on the colonial subjects as she examines a century of dissent on the question of empire and shows how British critics of empire were influenced by rebellions and resistance in the colonies,  from the West Indies and East Africa to Egypt and India. In addition, a pivotal role in fomenting resistance was played by anticolonial campaigners based in London, right at the heart of empire. Much has been written on how colonized peoples took up British and European ideas and turned them against empire when making claims to freedom and self-determination.  Gopal’s highly influencial and valued book Insurgent Empire shows how Britain’s enslaved and colonial subjects were active agents in their own liberation. Raimund Löw berichtete seit den 1980er-Jahren für den ORF als Auslandskorrespondent. Seine Interviews mit Michail Gorbatschow, Bill Clinton, Luis Inacio „Lula“ da Silva, George W. Bush und vielen mehr fanden auch internationale Beachtung. Raimund Löw war Zeuge der Umwälzungen in Russland rund um das Jahr 1989 in Moskau, er war Korrespondent des ORF in Brüssel, Washington und Peking und erlebte hautnah die zumeist dynamischen Entwicklungen in den jeweiligen Staaten.  Sein neues, im Falter-Verlag erschienenes Buch ist eine journalistische Reise durch die Veränderungen der internationalen Politik, die zur heutigen Realität in der 1.
