Episode 190: Dr. Ben House - Optimizing Testosterone
This episodes guest is Dr. Ben House from Functional Medicine Costa Rica.
This is Ben's second appearance on the ATSW podcast, having been previously on the show back on episode 119.
Functional Medicine Practitioner (CFMP). House was accepted to medical school without an undergraduate degree, but rescinded because during this time his father was fighting for his life with debilitating diverticulitis. The conventional medical model prescribed him pain killers, antibiotics, saltine crackers, and white bread. This pushed House to question the sick care model and look for the underlying lifestyle and dietary factors that could be the reason why his father was in so much pain. Lo and behold his father had Celiac disease and within a week of removing all grains and diary from his diet he was symptom free. This was Dr. House’s first taste of Functional Medicine and he knew at that moment that this would be his life’s passion. Since then he has studied under some of the best in the world and continues to regularly attend and present at conferences and seminars around the world.
As a strength coach, House has worked at both the high school and collegiate levels, including time under Coach Wright at the University of Texas Basketball. Besides practicing Functional Med, coaching, and writing articles for Functional Medicine Costa Rica, House has numerous publications in peer-reviewed, high-impact scientific journals. House blends his knowledge of research and Functional Medicine with years of experience working directly with a variety of different clients.
On this episode Ben and I discussed:
Ben gives us a brief background and introduction
Ben and I discuss how much hypertrophy is necessary for health
I ask Ben to discuss how to optimize testosterone production
I ask Ben what testing does he like to use to assess someones testosterone levels - blood, saliva, and. or urine?
I ask Ben what interventions does he like to utilize to enhance testosterone production
I ask Ben about about how concussion can lead to a leaky brain and gut barrier
I ask Ben - would he ever recommend someone to decrease their daily step count to help enhance hypertrophy gains?
I ask Ben how does he set an individuals caloric needs and macro-nutrients?
I ask Ben about the polarized topic of energy in and out and hormonal regulation when it comes to weight and body composition management
Finally I ask Ben - if he could invite 5 people to dinner, dead or alive, who would he invite and why?
This was an outstanding episode and I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did!
Stay Strong,
RB

Episode 184: Pat Davidson - Whats New? MASS 3, Reckoning 2, and Costa Rica Retreat
Firstly - My audio sucks dick on this episode - I was in between laptops at the time and the audio on my end didn't come out great. I fucked up the mic set up. Pat is crystal clear, and really that's all that matters.
Also you will hear me chopping some vegetables for a few minutes mid-way through the episode (27:00 to approximately 38:00) and because I was unaware of how the laptop I was using at the time was functioning regarding the audio set up - it picked up the sound of me preparing my meal. But fuck it the content of the conservation was too good for me not to post this episode. I have since sorted the audio and have acquired a quality mic, and since this episode the audio for all episodes since has been excellent.
Anyway....
On this episode Pat and I discuss:
Whats new with him
MASS 3
We discuss the use of RPEs
I ask Pat about the withdrawal from completing MASS 2 and how he will consider this for MASS 3
I ask Pat - how was the Reckoning 2
Pat discusses how we as a specific are reducing our allostatic capabilities by making our environments too comfortable
I ask Pat - How was the retreat at Ben House's Wellness Centre in Costa Rica
I ask Pat what was he currently reading at the time of this recording
This was an outstanding episode and I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did!
Stay Strong,
