Finding the Throughline with Kate Hanley
Kate Hanley
Finding the Throughline: Conversations about the Creative Process invites you into the minds of writers and other creatives as they open up about their process, their doubts, and what kinds of changes they’re thinking about making. The questions are mildly invasive, honestly, and the answers are unvarnished…and so refreshing! Whether your creative work is writing, painting, making music, parenting, or simply living, Finding the Throughline can help you get—and stay—inspired. Invigorated, even. [Trusting Yourself]: A New Way to Think About Doubt. EP: 671
Doubt is something that is always going to crop up from time to time. And when those doubts come in–well, it can feel like torture. It’s an open invitation for your inner critic to go hog wild. And it can also feel like a sign that you ought to stop. A very clear, blinking, neon sign that means "DON'T DO IT!" I have another way to view it. Learn more about your ad choices. [Trusting Yourself]: Reading Your Body’s Signals. EP: 670
Your inner wisdom lives in your body, whether you call it a feeling in your bones or a gut feeling or something you know all the way down to your toes. The more we learn about the gut the more science recognizes it as a second brain, with more than 100 million neurons spread throughout the digestive tract. That’s a lot of processing power that we overlook when we try to only cogitate our way through something. And we’re never really taught how to understand the signals our body – aka our gut – is sending out. And that’s a real loss because while analytical or critical thinking is not bad, it’s just not the only game in town. Let's make today the day this starts to change. Learn more about your ad choices. [Trusting Yourself]: Need Advice? Ask Your Muse. EP: 669
Today I'm interviewing award winning book coach Lisa Tener. Why am I interviewing a book coach during Trust Yourself week? Well, a lot of people think writing a book is strictly an intellectual pursuit, but it's also so much about being able to access your creativity and trusting yourself and your message. Lisa has a signature process that she walks her clients through called Meet Your Muse, and it's basically an opportunity to have a conversation with the wisest, most inspired part of yourself. In this episode, Lisa talks me through it and you get to meet my very cute and little muse. And if you'd like to experience the process directly for yourself, here's the link where you can Meet Your Muse.Check out Lisa's The Joy of Writing Journal. [Trusting Yourself]: Making Decisions from Your Heart. EP: 668
There are two basic forces in the world – fear, and love. And with our negativity bias–the tendency of our brains to focus more on things that didn’t work out or that cause pain than on the things that go well and lift us up–we place way too much of our focus on fear. This exercise helps give love more of a voice the next time you're facing a decision. I offer a nicely designed PDF version of today's exercise on my website. [Trusting Yourself]: Is It Your Gut, or Is It Fear? EP: 667
Every single one of us has a wise part of ourselves that always has our best interests at heart and that can process all kinds of information and feelings and sensation that our thinking mind can only barely start to perceive. That wise part is your intuition or your gut, and developing a relationship with it is a crucial piece of trusting yourself. The problem is that it’s an internal voice and frankly, we have a lot of internal voices, and not all of them are all that helpful. So in order to be able to start building a tighter relationship with your intuition, it’s really helpful to figure out how to tell the difference between your gut, and your fear. In this episode, I share some key differences between the two voices so that you can recognize more easily when you’ve gotten hooked by fear, and pay more attention to the messages that are coming from your intuition. [Life Admin]: Life Admin Secrets from a Professional Organizer. EP: 664
Frankly, life admin just makes me want to lie down. Which is why I’m excited to be interviewing my friend, Jessica Tudos, a mindful organizer based in Toronto whom I always love talking to about how to get a grip on the many facets of life while still respecting things like creativity and being moved by inspiration and having a lot of things going on because you’re genuinely interested in a lot of things–something Jessica calls being multi-passionate. In today's episode, Jessica dishes up how she keeps all the details of life contained, and how you can do it, too, in a way that suits your personality and your life. [Life Admin]: Adulting Can Feel Relentless; Here’s How to Contain It. EP: 662
This week on the podcast I’m talking about how to take better care of all the details of life–making appointments, paying bills, prepping your taxes, keeping your paperwork up to date, your car maintenanced, your communication handled, etc., etc., etc. In other words, I’m talking about adulting. And when I went to research this topic I realized it had a very technical sounding name: life admin. Which simultaneously made me feel a mixture of grief and relief--a simultaneous feeling of, no wonder I’ve been feeling the way that I have, and, dang, I guess this is really a thing that must be reckoned with. Let's do it, together.Contribute your tips and successes to the Life Admin Tipsheet! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
