How Big Oil Covered Up Climate Change 70 Years Ago w/ Rebecca John (G&R 352)

We’ve long known that the fossil fuel industry, and front groups like the Western States Petroleum Association, has created a system of denial and disinformation to prevent the public from knowing the full extent of the damage they’ve inflicted on the climate. But new revelations show that their knowledge goes back to the 1950s. Now, as the city of Los Angeles is burning, and a president who calls climate change a “hoax” is about to re-enter office, these revelations are more important than ever. In the first of a series of episodes that we are calling “Climate in the Age of Trump,” we talk with researcher Rebecca John with the Climate Investigation Center to discuss these findings. Bio// Rebecca John is a Research Fellow at the Climate Investigations Center. She is also a freelance journalist and award-winning documentary film maker. --------------------------------- Outro- "Even If We Didn't Start the Fire" by Skyfalling Links// + Revealed: Big Oil Told 70 Years Ago That Fossil Fuel Emissions Could Impact ‘Civilization’ (https://bit.ly/4fWPPWO) + Revealed: A U.S. President Was First Informed of CO2’s Impact 59 Years Ago This Month (https://bit.ly/4gTzvYu) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM) +NEW: Follow us on Substack (https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com) +NEW: Follow us on Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/podcastgreenred.bsky.social) Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Green and Red Live Event in Berkeley on Jan. 16th!

Join us on January 16th at 7pm for a panel on Media in the age of war and resistance. The panel will feature Flashpoints host Dennis Bernstein, Nora Barrows-Friedman with Electronic Intifada and Green and Red Podcast co-host Prof. Robert Buzzanco. We’re living in challenging times with crises around war in the Middle East, renewed McCarthyist attacks on free speech, corporate domination of everyday life and escalating climate disasters. We’re also living in a time where large numbers of people have taken to the streets to confront those responsible for these crises. For decades, independent media has told the stories that corporate media has kept hidden. It has shined a light on the elites and corporations making profit from destruction of people and the planet. As we enter another Trump administration, radical independent media will be more important than ever. WHERE: The Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists; 1924 Cedar St. , Berkeley CA WHEN: Jan. 16th. Doors open at 7pm. Event begins at 7:15pm Virtual viewing: We'll also be live streaming the event on our Facebook Page RSVP: https://bit.ly/Jan16PanelEvent Join us as we discuss media in the age of war and resistance, why it matters and how to stand in solidarity with those on the frontlines. R.I.P. Jimmy Carter: Liberal Saint Now, Neo-Liberal War Criminal Then (G&R 350)

The reflection on Jimmy Carter's legacy reveals a stark contrast between his post-presidency humanitarian efforts and the neoliberal policies during his administration. Discussion highlights the influence of the Trilateral Commission and examines how his presidency set the stage for Reagan's era. Plus, the analysis critiques U.S. foreign interventions, particularly in Central America and Asia, questioning the ethical implications of Carter's foreign policy. Overall, it's a deep dive into a complex political legacy that challenges conventional perceptions.

In our latest, we discuss the topic on everyone’s mind in America- the assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione (allegedly). We are less interested in Luigi’s story and more interested in the reaction by many in the public. We discuss the zeitgeist in America, United Healthcare’s many crimes against many of their customers, America’s rage at the corporate healthcare sector and the media and political elites’ attempt to stem the anger away from corporate power holders. The Democrats are a Party of War! Liberals and the Military-Industrial Complex (G&R 347)

The NY Times recently published an essay titled "When Did Liberals Become So Comfortable with War?" This is a conventional media trope--that the Democrats were not a party of war but have pivoted toward that position. In this episode Scott and Bob go into detail about how wrong this idea is! The Democrats, the Liberals, since the days of Woodrow Wilson have been aggressive and warlike. In search of global markets and investment, cheap labor and resources, liberalism demanded International reach, with bankers and eventually soldiers spanning the globe to expand American power . . . all part of the core Liberal ideology. ----------------------------------Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by MoodyFollow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/uvrdubcM) +NEW: Follow us on Substack (https://greenandredpodcast.substack.com)+NEW: Follow us on Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/podcastgreenred.bsky.social)Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR Our Networks// +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ +We're part of the Anti-Capitalist Podcast Network: linktr.ee/anticapitalistpodcastnetwork +Listen to us on WAMF (90.3 FM) in New Orleans (https://wamf.org/) This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. A is for Anarchy: The Politics of “Watchmen” and “V for Vendetta” Creator Alan Moore w/ Kristian Williams (G&R 346)

Alan Moore is one of the most important comic book and graphic novel creators in the business. His work has subverted the comic book genre and put radical ideas into the mainstream. In our latest, Scott talks with author Kristian Williams about his new book, “The Illuminist – Philosophical Explorations in the Work of Alan Moore,” which looks at the anarchist politics of Alan Moore. They discuss his subversion of long standing literary and comic book genres, characters and storylines in "The Watchmen" and "V for Vendetta," and, of course the origins and nature of Moore's anti-authoritarian political philosophy. This episode is another segment in our ongoing series on how Arts and Culture raises political consciousness. Bio// Kristian Williams has been involved in anarchist movements since the 1990s.
