Green & Red: Podcasts for Scrappy Radicals

In this pilot episode, Mike Elk, founder and senior labor reporter on Payday Report, and Bob Buzzanco of Green & Red Podcast present their soon-to-be-regular podcast on Labor in the U.S. We'll dive into the general state of labor and unions in the U.S., organizing drives, strikes, and other developments relevant to working people as they emerge. In this first show Mike discussed the recent tribute to the legendary folk singer Anne Feeney, like Mike another Yinzer, and then we discussed the successful end of the UAW organizing drive in Chattanooga and the move toward negotiations now; the role of labor in protesting the campus beatdowns by cops (California grad students are UAW members); and the upcoming vote at a Mercedes plant in Alabama. In a free-wheeling discussion Scott and Bob and friend and frequent G&R guest Clayton Lust, a professor of history as several Houston-area community colleges, talked about the campus protests of the 1960s, especially at Columbia in 1968, their meaning, their consequences and their tactics. All of us have written and/or taught about U.S. radical protests and the 1960s. We then pivoted to a conversation about today's campus protests against the U.S.-sponsored and -subsidized slaughters in Gaza and the huge impact they've had in shifting public opinion and giving hope in a bleak time. On Wednesday, in Austin TX, hundreds of police converged on the University of Texas to attack a peaceful protest in solidarity with the victims of the Israeli genocide in Gaza. At least 57 students and protest participants were arrested. A Fox News cameraman and other journalists were assaulted and arrested. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott gloated in a video about his state troopers attacking pro-Palestinian protests. We talk with Candice Bernd (@candicebernd), who was at the protests, about what happened. This week, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear McKesson v. Doe. The case involves a police officer injured during a Black Lives Matter protest after the police murder of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La in 2016. The injured police officer sued the organizer DeRay McKesson for damages. Last year, the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit sided with the officer. The Supreme Court, for a second time, declined to hear the case. The impact of the Supreme Court's decision to decline to hear the case is potentially devastating for organizers of mass protests. In our latest, Scott talks with movement lawyer Maggie Ellinger-Locke about the case and the precedent it may be setting up. Bio// Maggie Ellinger-Locke, she/her, is a movement lawyer based in the Washington DC area, living on the stolen land of the Anacostan and Piscataway peoples. She works for the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center at Howard University School of Law, where she helps train the next generation of movement lawyers. Previously she worked as a staff attorney at Greenpeace USA, and has also worked in public policy and private practice. Forest defenders have launched a tree sit to stop old growth logging on federal Bureau of Land Management land in Southern Oregon. Community members are opposing the Poor Windy timber sale, which targets thousands of acres of mature and old growth forest. Scott gets an update from two forest defenders fighting the timber sale. They talk about the campaign, community support for the tree-sit and how forest defense is climate defense. In our scrappy Tax Day episode, we get right down to it. We get into the anniversary of the publishing of "The Grapes of Wrath" and its significance on America and the American Left. We discuss how your tax dollars are subsidizing war profiteers like Lockheed Martin and keeping the war effort in Gaza going while paying for healthcare and public education in Israel. Scott also talks about a recent direct action at a Lockheed Martin facility in Sunnyvale, CA and the violence perpetrated by the company's employees when they were blocked from parking their cars in the company parking lot.
