Flashpoints' Dennis Bernstein on Media in an Age of War and Resistance (G&R 330)
We had a fantastic interview w/ Dennis Bernstein, host of KPFA's "Flashpoints" and longtime journalist on the Left who's inspired and helped so many of us.
Dennis talked about his start on radio, including fascinating recollections of his role in covering the U.S. war on Central America and the Contra-CIA-Cocaine scandal in the 80s. We talked about his role in Left media, and how he's been at the forefront of so many issues of importance to us--war and peace, justice, labor, immigration, and so on.
Importantly we discussed the renewed "McCarthyist" attack on free speech, Dennis's thoughts on being a Jewish peace activist amid charges of anti-semitism, and we had a great conversation about his poetry and how important that's been to his own career.

Mutual Aid in a Pandemic. NOLA Edition! With Jasmine Araujo from Southern Solidarity! (G&R 15)
In this episode, Jasmine Araujo of Southern Solidarity joins us to discuss Mutual Aid in a Pandemic, in New Orleans. She and her crew have set up shop and they feed 200 people a day, give them blankets, arrange for medical care, and help when they get harassed by cops or passers-by. She discusses the origins of Southern Solidarity, their daily routine, and the way COVID-19 has affected the homeless in New Orleans. After that, Scott and Bob talk a little about the importance of Mutual Aid and workers actions. While the media is reporting the spectacle of little Nazis and Confederates "protesting" at State Capitols, a far greater number of people are staging workplace actions for better working conditions and safety. There's a lot going on here at the Green and Red Podcast! (New York) Yankee Imperialism: The World Series and the economics of baseball (G&R 329)
To celebrate the World Series we got together with our
frequent-collaborator and great friend Clayton Lust (@claytonlust) to
discuss the business of baseball, an appropriate topic since the two
most valuable and wealthy franchises, the Yankees and Dodgers, are
fighting it out.
We discussed the ways in which baseball is a great way to learn about
capitalism--the value of franchises, the wealth of owners and players,
but more importantly the state's support of wealthy MLB teams through
subsidies to build stadiums, tax breaks, infrastructure and more. We
also discussed the impact of all this on the fans--the price of tickets,
merchandise at the ballpark, and the overall costs to the family to go
to a game.
We like to talk about pop culture and politics and what better way to
discuss it than discuss the fall classic.

We also talk about the politics of the diaspora, the murder of Vietnamese journalist Nguyen Dam Phong by right-wing anti-communist Vietnamese groups and right wing Vietnamese support and participation in the January 6th insurrection.

We discussed his early life, his military service, his trajectory into the Nashville song writing scene, his music, his acting career and, of course, his politics. Miracle in the Beanfield: Robert Redford's “Milagro Beanfield War” (G&R 327)
In our second installment in our new "Green & Red Arts and Culture Series" we talked about the book and movie *The Milagro Beanfield War." While is a heartwarming story of a regular guy taking on the system, there are significant political messages there too.
The people of Milagro, New Mexico had to deal with outside "developers" coming in to their community take control of politics, the land, and even the war. The character Joe Mondragon then kicked a sluice gate to water his beans and invoked the wrath of local businessmen and politicians. Locally Joe became a hero and the development company put him in its crosshairs.
The book, by John Nichols, and the movie directed by Robert Redford examine issues like land use, water rights, local organization efforts, community organizing, Latin culture, and more.

Green and Red is starting a new series that talks about how art and culture develop and raise political consciousness. We'll be putting out episodes that talk about the politics of our favorite TV series, film, books, music and whatever else we come up.

We discuss it's reflections on the political economy, Edward Bernays and the history of the advertising industry, the gender politics of the 1960s, the military industrial complex, the ultimate co-optation of the spirit of the 60s in the shows series finale and much much more.
Take a break from the news and our collapsing world and dive into Green and Red's Arts and Culture Series.

Mutual Aid and Disaster Relief in North Carolina w/ Matt from Rural Organizing and Resilience (G&R 324)
CAT 4 Hurricane Helene hit the southeast U.S. causing billions in destruction and at least 230 deaths. Western North Carolina was hit particularly hard, despite being called a "haven" from climate disaster. Mutual aid groups across the region sprung into action to provide immediate aid and relief.
In our latest, Scott talks with Matt, an organizer working with Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR). ROAR has been providing mutual aid in rural counties in western North Carolina. They discuss the situation on the ground, mutual aid response, "state" response and the possibility of disaster capitalism in the region.
Matt is a long time organizer, western North Carolina resident and works with Rural Organizing and Resilience.

"De-Escalation Through Escalation".. Israel's Wars and All the Politics w/ Eugene Puryear (G&R 323)
Over the past week, Israel has begun a major escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon with the "pager attack" on the Lebanese population, assassinations of senior Hezbollah leadership and airstrikes in southern Lebanon that has killed at least 500 people and led to thousands to flee their homes. Israel has called this strategy "De-escalation through escalation," and done it with the full support of the Biden-Harris administration.
In our latest episode, Scott talks with host and producer of
Breakthrough News Eugene Puryear about the escalation, how it effects politics and movement politics in the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign.
They also talk in depth about the connections between the black liberation movement and the Free Palestine movement. They also discuss why black churches and organized labor have supported a ceasefire, why the mainstream environmental groups haven't. And finally how there is increasing support of socialism, dislike of capitalism in the U.S. and the backlash to that growing consciousness.
