418. Fraudulent Alzheimer’s Drug Research has led to 20 years down the wrong path - Investigative journalist Charles Piller explains

How can 20 years of fraudulent science pass? It’s complicated. It’s not just vested interests but humans, desire, ego, hope and poor checks and balances. “Doctored”, the new book by investigative science journalist Charles Piller, is an arresting deep dive into how Alzheimer’s disease treatment has been set back by corrupt researchers, negligent regulators, and the profit motives of companies for the past nearly 20 years. I genuinely believe it’s one of the most important conversations I’ve hosted on the show, in a time where many have become blanket skeptics of science - while we explore this hectically fraudulent research: I asked Charles: Is there hope for us to ever believe again in the scientific method? He walks us through his investigative process after the initial tip off, how he gathered information that was robust enough to draw a conclusion, and then how, despite uncovering this research and nearly 20 years of fraudulent claims, he maintains hope and a lot of trust in the scientific method. I hope you find the show as powerful as I did and it doesn’t feel too heartbreaking but rather more like we are finally now closer to knowing how we can make progress by carving a new chapter in Alzheimer's research for cause and cure. AlexxCharles Piller is an investigative journalist for Science magazine and his work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Sacramento Bee, and more. Piller has been honored with many national journalism awards, and is the author of Gene Wars, The Fail-Safe Society, and Doctored. He has reported on public health, biological warfare, infectious disease outbreaks, and other topics from the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central America.Check out Charle’s latest book Doctored here. Thank you to this month’s show partners for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@cleannectarine is giving you 20% off the beauty and personal care ranges with all orders over $99. 417. From Farm to Eater: Let’s focus on what and who is making a difference when trying to change the food system.

When I started low tox life, for years I’d get excited when, say, Campbell’s soup or Hershey’s would announce they were banning GMOs from their products… or when M&M’s announced they’d stop using petroleum based colours. “We’re winning” - but were we? In recent years I’m way less excited when mega corporations change their recipes to be better - even though it is still a good thing - it’s not a slightly better ingredient list on an ultra processed ‘gluten free’ cheesy puff that’s going to make us healthier and our planet more resilient. Nope. What excites me is food systems change - less sexy, less algorithm eye-catching and way more complex/multi-faceted  It also requires YOU and ME to do the majority of the work for that change. It’s more regenerative, healthy farming methods, family farming, small-holder support, localised food, access to cultural/ecologically sound foods that is going to radically change both planet and people’s health. And so… it’s why I find wonderful farmers and authors like @stephanieandersonwriting who tell farmer stories and explore systems change, to bring powerful conversations to the show for us to think about what really matters most. My conversation companion for this week’s show is Stephanie Anderson, acclaimed author and social justice journalist. With a background in creative nonfiction, a deep understanding of regenerative agriculture, and years of exploring the intersections of equity and sustainability, Stephanie brings a fresh and thought-provoking perspective to the critical issues shaping our future with her first book “One size fits NONE” and new book, From the Ground Up: The Women Revolutionizing Regenerative Agriculture (The New Press, 2024). It’s a powerful exploration of the women who are leading a transformative movement in agriculture, reshaping systems and inspiring hope in the face of environmental and societal challenges. Well worth a read!  I hope you love this week’s show.Thank you to this month’s show partners for joining us to help you make your low tox swaps! @ausclimate is our major partner giving you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating, air-circulating and cooling range. code LOWTOXLIFE (also works over and above their sales - pro tip!) https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@cleannectarine is giving you 20% off the beauty and personal care ranges with all orders over $99. 416. "Tammi Jonas PhD: Designing a Food System for All — Culturally Relevant, Nutritious, and ecologically sound"

Food is a brilliant unifier across political divides, if we’re brave enough to let it be. We all eat. And in this community, regardless of ‘diet type’ we all want food to be: AccessibleNutritiousGood qualityGood for the planet in the farming methods used Fair for the farmers - especially small holder farmers! Culturally appropriate and respectfulI don’t know if anyone else is sick of all the nit picking on socials about food and ‘which whole food does it better’ for our health and the planet - when most people are wondering if they can stretch the budget for those blueberries or that mince this week, but I am. Tammi Jonas has led the charge for many years, in making things better across all of these aspects of a fair food system and we talk this week about how much we can all do to mobilise - taking that active ‘next step’, to ensure a fairer food system is forged for all. She is an agroecologist in principle and in practice, farming heritage-breed pigs, cattle, and garlic with her bricoleur husband Stuart at Jonai Farms and Meatsmiths on the unceded lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung, where they share rent-free land with the young First and Second Nations market gardeners of Tumpinyeri Growers. Tammi is the focal point for farmers with the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA), advocating for everyone’s right to participate in decisions about food and agriculture systems. In 2024, she completed a PhD on the rise of agroecology in Australia, and collectivising to deal with the problem of the state, as well as publishing a cookbook to help everyone Eat Like the Jonai.Thank you to this month’s show partners for joining us to help you make your low tox swaps! @ausclimate is our major partner giving you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating, air-circulating and cooling range. code LOWTOXLIFE (also works over and above their sales - pro tip!) https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@cleannectarine is giving you 20% off the beauty and personal care ranges with all orders over $99. 415. Erika Schwartz, MD wants you to know what it feels like to have a great doctor.

Erikas Schwarz, MD is the kind of doctor that once you’ve spoken with her, you want her to be yours - how ‘bout it, Erika? Gosh I loved meeting this woman, who fearlessly and thoughtfully guides her patients, calls out the medical establishment as cult-like and how we need to look bigger picture and get better reads on research before taking action with patients given it’s people’s lives and mental health at stake. Dr. Erika is a pioneer in the use of bio-identical hormones for preventing illness and recognizing their direct link to overall wellness and their interconnection with diet, sleep and stress management. She has authored eight best-selling books as well as numerous articles. Her focus on treating patients as a whole person began more than 30 years ago with her understanding that bio-identical hormone replacement is the safest, most effective path to increased health span and to achieve the highest quality of life. While this show is absolutely not about making statements that ‘everybody should take hormones’ nor is that even the main focus of our conversation, it is about: Cultivating great patient/doctor relationships and empowering yourself more in your health journey.I hope you love discovering Dr Erika as much as I did and can’t wait to hear what jumped out most for you, Alexx xWant to support the podcast? Free option: Leave a 5 star review wherever you listen to Low Tox Life - thanks SO much! Paid + Member PERKS: Join the Low Tox Club - monthly practitioner live masterclasses, a suite of low tox store discounts from around the world and the most supportive and lovely chat group on all low tox topics on the internet: Check it out and join here for just the price of a coffee per month! https://www.lowtoxlifecourses.com/offers/YzLXThRQ/checkoutThank you to this month’s show sponsors for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate is back as our major partner for 2025, giving you 10% off their range of brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating and air-circulating products. 414. Let them be naked - A plea to change our fashion culture, with Jeff Garner

Fashion - Despite what we’ve known for over a decade now, our fashion predicament is getting worse - petroleum-based colours and fabrics, faster and ‘cheaper’ fashion than ever before and awful conditions for most garment workers internationally - and? Landfill from throwing it all away is getting dire. It’s kind of hard to feel a sense of hope but Jeff Garner, fashion designer and founder of Prophetik (with Taylor Swift and Kinds of Leon among his clients!) is determined to give us that today - with this conversation and with his upcoming documentary, “Let them be Naked”. If you want to understand: Environmental Toxins in today’s fashion worldWhy we need to rethink ‘cost’ when it comes to the clothes we buyThe magical opportunity to connect with nature on a deep level through our clothing choicesWhy I wanted to take my T-Shirt off, despite it being made of organic linen, by the end of the show? Well, you’ll just have to take a listen! Hope you love it as much as I enjoyed this conversation and yes, I feel a deeply renewed sense of agency and hope - Jeff is a treasure of a human. 413. Dr Kurt Gray on how we can all be less “Outraged!”

There is so much outrage online and in communities these days - what can we do about it? How can we bridge divides, tackle polarisation and even deal with different ideas on a good life in families (like simply changing cleaning products or ditching processed food and everyone in your family thinking you’re nuts, crunchy and woo woo!)Enter Dr Kurt Gray; a Professor in Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he directs the Deepest Beliefs Lab and the Center for the Science of Moral Understanding. He received his BSc from the University of Waterloo, and his PhD is Social Psychology from Harvard University. His research investigates how best to bridge political divides, and the causes and consequences of people’s deepest beliefs, including morality and religion. We have a brilliant conversation about beliefs, outrage, the role the online world is playing, and how to get better at being less Outraged and starting to find where we overlap and can agree with one another - storytelling is the key to the path forward. I hope you will feel this speak to you as deeply it did, me, as a subject. I find it very hard to choose a camp because I know in my heart I don’t fit in any of the so well defined camps we see in this polarised world. Anyone fancy joining me asw we venture forward working from our overlaps instead of forcing each other to pick sides and then dehumanise the ‘other’? The invite is open. See you online to talk about itAlexx xConnect further with Kurt’s work here: https://www.kurtjgray.com/@kurtjgray on X and InstaWant to support the show? Free option: Leave a 5 star review wherever you listen to Low Tox Life - thanks SO much! Paid + Member PERKS: Join the Low Tox Club - monthly practitioner live masterclasses, a suite of low tox store discounts from around the world and the most supportive and lovely chat group on all low tox topics on the internet: Check it out and join here for just the price of a coffee per month! https://www.lowtoxlifecourses.com/offers/YzLXThRQ/checkoutThank you to this month’s show partners for joining us to help you make your low tox swaps! @ausclimate is back as our major partner for 2025, giving you 10% off their range of brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating and air-circulating products. Well here it is - the last show of 2024! Thank you for being with me these past 50 shows, as we’ve expanded into more Low Tox Mind and Life topics, both family and personal, with a view to supporting the whole picture of a healthy life, not just all the things that go wrong and how to fix them - which of course shall always be a part of it, but where our attention goes our energy flows and there is so much goodness and life to be lived - even when it can all feel like it’s falling apart at times.I hope you enjoy this wonderful conversation with master coach Josselyne Herman-Saccio (SAY Joss-Lynn Herman SAHHCHEEO) who shows us the Art Of Being Unmessable with, no matter what life throws at you.
