426. Scientia Professor Matthew England: Oceans, climate and explaining common confusions and questions

What Matthew England, a “Scientia” Professor at UNSW (a renowned globally as the top expert because of his research and contributions to the subject) didn’t know would happen when he chose his field of study, Oceanography in the 80s, would be that he and his colleagues would quickly become climate scientists. In this week’s show, we discuss:The ocean’s role as an absorber, filter and producer (think of our liver: Overloaded? Stops functioning effectively and all hell breaks loose!)“But it’s just a natural cycle” - a popular phrase often touted and how we can better understand why the picture today is not normal…All that mould and humidity increasing in the past decades? Climate change. Meet “tropification” 🤯Transitions and navigating a path forward. Is an ‘a-political approach’ possible?I hope soon that instead of arguing if it’s real or not, we debate instead the best ways forward and make climate a-political, and for gosh sake, stop vilifying cows and revering plants as ‘evil vs good’. WASTE and ultra-processed food trumps any whole food you could ever pile on your plate regarding climate impact. I know many people feel conflicted because of the climate conversation being made to ‘be’ a certain way. It doesn’t have to be but it also doesn’t mean we need to choose the ‘it’s a hoax’ either. Matthew England is Scientia Professor of Ocean & Climate Dynamics at the University of New South Wales Centre for Marine Science and Innovation, Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science, and the global Academic Lead of the International Universities Climate Alliance (IUCA).Want to learn more about this week’s guest? 425. Innsæi: The Power of Intuition (and the cost of not harnessing it) with Hrund Gunnsteinsdóttir

What is your understanding of “Intuition? Do you feel yours is fine tuned? Well, it turns out what we ‘think’ is our intuition is often instead our:Instinct - which comes from fear and keeping us ‘safe’Bias influenced by multiple layers of external conditioning Suspicion - seeking the pleasure or assuredness of confirmed bias until we find itThought - Rationalisation based on what we rationally know rather than what we intuitively know.Lately in my own self awareness I’ve been exploring all of these subtly different things that we can confuse with intuition and I found myself asking:  Is the cost of ignoring it as great as the power of using it?Enter another new favourite human: Hrund Gunnsteinsdóttir. Hrund is an Icelandic thought leader, author, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and TED/keynote speaker. She is remodelling our understanding of intuition, through the Icelandic concept of InnSæi. She helps individuals and organisations rethink and reshape their relationship with change, uncertainty, and intuition, bringing together some of the world’s foremost research and practices on the fundamental role intuition plays for our intelligence and in our lives. She is the author of InnSæi the book. Co-director and script writer of the documentary InnSæi: The Power of Intuition, shown on Netflix worldwide. Want to learn more about this week’s guest? www.hrundgunnsteinsdottir.com TED Talk insta BooktopiaThank you to this month’s show partners for joining us to help you make your low tox swaps! @ausclimate is our major partner giving you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating, air-circulating and cooling range. code LOWTOXLIFE (also works over and above their sales - pro tip!) https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@weledaaustralia kicks off from March 31 throughout April - A huge 20% off sitewide with the code LOWTOXLIFE. 424. Dr. Nayan Patel on Glutathione: Could it be the most important thing we need for health?

Who doesn’t want a better quality of life for longer, right? This week, we’re talking about oxidative stress and the role of Glutathione: How we get pushed, slowly, slowly out of homeostasis in our first 3 decades of lifeHow the disease/medication cycle is inadequate and we need to focus on homeostasis recalibration to heal, not just manage disease. How a dietary focus on cysteine is the most accessible antioxidant move we all have access to. How glutathione delivery is often not worth the many forms it comes in in supplements. How getting the research right led to some incredible results - especially for his Dad! Great ep for the peeps struggling to heal, feel that homeostasis magic or who love the nerdier health topics exploring the latest research. Pharmacist Dr Nayan Patel, who felt that after his top university education landed him in the business of maintaining people’s disease conditions (while acknowledging it was of course often life saving), wasn’t happy with ‘sickness management’ and went on to specialising in compounding medicines and supplements working with doctors. He then began researching oxidative stress and extending health span, rather than just life span, which was the start of @aurowellness. He recently published his first comprehensive book, The Glutathione Revolution: Fight Disease, Slow Aging & Increase Energy. 423. Bridging divides and carving a new path for small and medium-sized farms with Brian Reisinger

On this week’s show… Something like “being tough on immigration” can so easily become political capital, and, of course no one wants unfettered streams of people, unchecked, moving through one’s country’s borders. But what happens, when a hard-line policy ignores nuance, ignores affected industries and is also hard on human rights while implementing policy? Enter this week’s show guest, Brian Reisinger, author of Land Rich Cash Poor, from a multi-generation farm, a journalist, author and ex White House agricultural policy adviser, who works on building bipartisan support for improving the lives of farmers and the stability of the food system - from access to consumer pricing. We need to think more profoundly and go wider in our search to understand a subject, garnering more perspectives on issues before we ‘know them’. Big tech profits from polarisation and sensationalisation. I feel lucky to bring these considered, intelligent deep dives to the show with experts who can explore all aspects of an issue - not just what they want to promote or politicise. So we talk about: How the farm seems to have been the way of the past, not the future and how that feels for small and medium farms (across the world)How the evaporation of the middle class promise affects city and rural people TOGETHER - not as adversaries. How immigration policy affects small/medium farms and policy often fails farms. and much moreWant to learn more about this week’s guest? X: @BrianJReisinger | Facebook | Website | BooktopiaThank you to this month’s show partners for joining us to help you make your low tox swaps! @ausclimate is our major partner giving you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating, air-circulating and cooling range. code LOWTOXLIFE (also works over and above their sales - pro tip!) https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@biofirstofficial is back with an INTERNATIONAL offer to celebrate their new Blemish Ban range - 20% off! 422. The mouth and its many connections to disease in the rest of the body: Carving a Holistic Path with Dr Michelle Jorgensen

We don’t naturally think when we have recurrent sinusitis or cognitive decline: “Well I guess I should book with the dentist!” Right? Well, today’s guest Dr. Michelle Jorgensen who is a dentist, naturopath, author and speaker,. says, you might want to make that dentist appointment! As she’s seen as both a dentist and a naturopath, oftentimes what’s happening in the body can originate from dental work that’s been done in the mouth - common procedures millions of us have had.I was blown away by some of the examples she shared in this show. Once Michelle’s eyes were opened, she decided to study beyond dentistry and dive deep into the history of health cultivation from around the world to design a blueprint to get her own health back on track and help her patients and now people around the world do the same. In this show you’ll grow confidence in: How our mouth is a dashboard for the body and how to ask for investigations to see if what ails you is connected to past dental procedures you might have had. How we now have the technology to find hidden mouth infections that can lead to rapid health improvements - the Chronic fatigue example blew me away! How ‘we’re all energy’ isn’t woo woo - energy is just another word for electricity and we are all electrical beings.Tuning into what your body needs and when - an individual seasonal approach. How a simple assessment can give us a blueprint for how to move forward. I hope you love this show as much as I did & you can preorder Michelle’s book hereThank you to this month’s show partners for joining us to help you make your low tox swaps! @ausclimate is our major partner giving you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating, air-circulating and cooling range. code LOWTOXLIFE (also works over and above their sales - pro tip!) https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@biofirstofficial is back + offering a big saving to celebrate their new Blemish Ban range (including Blemish Bundles) - 20% off! 418. Fraudulent Alzheimer’s Drug Research has led to 20 years down the wrong path - Investigative journalist Charles Piller explains

How can 20 years of fraudulent science pass? It’s complicated. It’s not just vested interests but humans, desire, ego, hope and poor checks and balances. “Doctored”, the new book by investigative science journalist Charles Piller, is an arresting deep dive into how Alzheimer’s disease treatment has been set back by corrupt researchers, negligent regulators, and the profit motives of companies for the past nearly 20 years. I genuinely believe it’s one of the most important conversations I’ve hosted on the show, in a time where many have become blanket skeptics of science - while we explore this hectically fraudulent research: I asked Charles: Is there hope for us to ever believe again in the scientific method? He walks us through his investigative process after the initial tip off, how he gathered information that was robust enough to draw a conclusion, and then how, despite uncovering this research and nearly 20 years of fraudulent claims, he maintains hope and a lot of trust in the scientific method. I hope you find the show as powerful as I did and it doesn’t feel too heartbreaking but rather more like we are finally now closer to knowing how we can make progress by carving a new chapter in Alzheimer's research for cause and cure. AlexxCharles Piller is an investigative journalist for Science magazine and his work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Sacramento Bee, and more. Piller has been honored with many national journalism awards, and is the author of Gene Wars, The Fail-Safe Society, and Doctored. He has reported on public health, biological warfare, infectious disease outbreaks, and other topics from the United States, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central America.Check out Charle’s latest book Doctored here. Thank you to this month’s show partners for helping you make your low tox swaps easier: @ausclimate gives you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating range. code LOWTOXLIFE https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@cleannectarine is giving you 20% off the beauty and personal care ranges with all orders over $99. 417. From Farm to Eater: Let’s focus on what and who is making a difference when trying to change the food system.

When I started low tox life, for years I’d get excited when, say, Campbell’s soup or Hershey’s would announce they were banning GMOs from their products… or when M&M’s announced they’d stop using petroleum based colours. “We’re winning” - but were we? In recent years I’m way less excited when mega corporations change their recipes to be better - even though it is still a good thing - it’s not a slightly better ingredient list on an ultra processed ‘gluten free’ cheesy puff that’s going to make us healthier and our planet more resilient. Nope. What excites me is food systems change - less sexy, less algorithm eye-catching and way more complex/multi-faceted  It also requires YOU and ME to do the majority of the work for that change. It’s more regenerative, healthy farming methods, family farming, small-holder support, localised food, access to cultural/ecologically sound foods that is going to radically change both planet and people’s health. And so… it’s why I find wonderful farmers and authors like @stephanieandersonwriting who tell farmer stories and explore systems change, to bring powerful conversations to the show for us to think about what really matters most. My conversation companion for this week’s show is Stephanie Anderson, acclaimed author and social justice journalist. With a background in creative nonfiction, a deep understanding of regenerative agriculture, and years of exploring the intersections of equity and sustainability, Stephanie brings a fresh and thought-provoking perspective to the critical issues shaping our future with her first book “One size fits NONE” and new book, From the Ground Up: The Women Revolutionizing Regenerative Agriculture (The New Press, 2024). It’s a powerful exploration of the women who are leading a transformative movement in agriculture, reshaping systems and inspiring hope in the face of environmental and societal challenges. Well worth a read!  I hope you love this week’s show.Thank you to this month’s show partners for joining us to help you make your low tox swaps! @ausclimate is our major partner giving you 10% off their range for the whole of 2025, with brilliant Winix Air Purifiers, the best Dehumidifiers I’ve ever used and their new energy-efficient heating, air-circulating and cooling range. code LOWTOXLIFE (also works over and above their sales - pro tip!) https://bit.ly/ShopAusclimate@cleannectarine is giving you 20% off the beauty and personal care ranges with all orders over $99.
