How do you possibly summarize Tucker Max's story? Let me give it a shot. Yes, he's sold millions of books. Yes, he's now living on a ranch. But, the details of his wild and illustrious life aren't easy to put into words. His first book was published in 2001. Unlike most ranchers, Tucker's first book has nothing to do with farming, animal agriculture, or growing your own food. No. Tucker's first book was called The Definitive Book of Pick-up Lines, which was then followed by Belligerence and Debauchery: The Tucker Max Stories and then his most famous books I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell and Assholes Finish First. So, what happened between Tucker writing books about drinking beers, partying, and womanizing, and starting a ranch in Texas? Well, that's what we set out to discover in this conversation. We unpacked Tucker's life before writing, which includes an incomplete law career and failed attempts at corporate life. As you'll hear in our conversation, we spent a good deal of time discussing where people get stuck in their careers and why people struggle to make change. In many ways, Tucker's early career set him on a path to desperately find his calling. And, he certainly found it in writing. He's written and sold millions of copies of books, started a publishing agency, and become an authoritative figure in the world of written media. But, that doesn't really do Tucker's full story justice. He's also launched a successful podcast called The Mating Grounds, had a movie made about his stories, and been an outspoken visionary for the Paleo movement, psychedelics as a tool to heal emotional trauma, and the growth of Jiu-Jitsu as a sport. His life now looks very different than what it once was. He's a father and a farmer. He raises his own food and spends most of his days solving problems on his farm and spending time with his kids. Gregg Schoenberg sold his company the Financial Revolutionist for millions of dollars. He's had mountains of success and lived a remarkable life from living in Spain for 6 months with his wife, taking care of his mother before she passed, working with Ray Dalio, launching an executive coaching business & starting a wildly successful financial newsletter. Gregg has lived a handful of different lives. He broke into Wall Street after attending Washington University and Cornell. Very few people see the other side of a traumatic health event like a stroke and get to see there health improve. Such was the case for Weldon Warren. After years of not paying close attention to his health, Weldon found himself in the hospital in rough shape. He had just experienced a stroke and, while his wife Ann stayed positive, she feared the worst. The news was hard to hear. At the time, Weldon was working as a money manager. His career was demanding and required his full faculties to do the job well - after all he was managing over $100m for various pension funds across the US. On top of his health worries, Weldon felt the pressure of his career looming as many of us do. It was right after 9/11 and Weldon had the responsibility of managing pension funds for several airline pilots in the industry. Now was certainly not the time for a health scare.As life does, the health struggle marked an inflection point for the young couple. Up until this point, they were mindful of how they treated their health, but with young children at home, a demanding job, and having just suffered a stroke, Ann and Weldon were determined to make lifestyle changes and find answers to 'what it means to live a healthy life'. It would have been easy for Ann and Weldon to turn to the pharmaceutical companies and doctors for answers, but after leaving the hospital the couple decided to do some research on their own. The doctors had famously told Weldon that “nutrition had nothing to do with his stroke”, but Ann and Weldon were not convinced. Since then they have been on a mission exploring the power of high-quality food and proper nutrition. They became so empowered by the mission that they ultimately established roots in Lubbock, Texas to begin raising and growing some of their own food. Now, they run one of the first commercially available grass-fed, grass-finished beef (never corn fed) operations called Holy Cow Beef. The creator economy is a crowded space. Where do you even get started? If you spend a few minutes, or hours (no judgment), scrolling Instagram, it's easy to tell there are a lot of people working on growing a following. However, very few people seem to have tapped into doing it in an authentic way. Matt Choi, our guest on the podcast today, seems to be a natural at it. He started his journey as a creator by blending his passion for physical fitness with his first love: football. As a collegiate athlete, Matt felt he had let some of his potential as an athlete squander. After getting laid off as a personal trainer, Matt focused his energy on bettering himself and reconstructing the man in the mirror. As you'll hear in our discussion, the high-energy, enthusiastic, and relentlessly positive Matt Choi you see on camera, was formed after a college football career that tested Matt's attitude and character. But, that failure did not define him. One of the many things we love about Matt as a creator is his willingness and ability to just throw himself into the fire. He does not hold himself back from new challenges and embraces the process of sharing his growth progression, not simply showcasing all his "wins" (of which he has many). Matt has done 30 days straight of the Murph Challenge and now he's working towards running a marathon a month, and documenting the entire process along the way. His attitude toward life, business, and family is infectious, and any creator or business owner looking to refocus on "building the foundation" will take a lot of value from this conversation. Since the average age of the American Rancher is nearly 60 years old, it's easy to understand why ranchers have been slower to leverage the power of the Internet to grow their businesses. This has created a real opportunity for younger ranchers to tap into the world of social media without much competition. RC Carter is the founder of Carter Country Meats where he sells his regeneratively-raised beef, and he's somewhat of a wizard on social media. There was something about the process that made him fall in love with food. The art. The freedom. The ability to speak the universal language of flavor. Unlike most people with degrees in Economics from Fordham, Myles graduated college without complete conviction in pursuing a career on Wall Street. While the opportunity was certainly there for Myles, he felt called to pursue a different path. That path wasn't conventional, but it felt right. His untapped curiosity for the world of food led Myles to the rich culinary world of Mexico. He spent months studying and training in the kitchen with some of the more talented chefs in Mexico, developing a deep appreciation for the art of creating simple and delicious food through timeless traditions & techniques. He was immediately inspired. As Myles refined his skills in Michelin-star kitchens in Mexico, his appreciation for the elements of quality food shifted. How can you take something as simple as a taco and create an experience that will live with someone for the rest of their life? It's a sensory piece of art that only food can provide. It wasn't simply the food that spoke to him. Myles saw what food meant to culture and bringing people together too. It's as if good food had a way of bridging two separate experiences, two separate lives, and in a moment, turning them into one shared connection. It's this element of cooking that Myles brought back with him to Austin. As you'll here in the podcast, Myle's experience in Mexico taught him that food is a bridge for human connection. It inspired him to share his knowledge and love for food with friends and family. But that's not all he was sharing with them. The meals and dishes he made are all part of a story.
