Dr Morgan Nolte | The BEST Strategies to Lose Weight for Good, How Fasting Fixes Digestive Issues & More! KKP: 633
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Morgan Nolte, PT, DPT, Board Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist (ABPTS) is the founder of Zivli, LLC. This episode originally aired in March 2022. She graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2014 and completed the Creighton University Hillcrest Health Systems Geriatric Physical Therapy Residency Program in 2015. Outside of work she loves cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, spending time with her husband, Justin, playing with their kids Dawson and Leah, devouring audiobooks, and being active. In this episode, Dr. Morgan Nolte opens the show by diving into her background and why she is so passionate about disease prevention. Keeping insulin low is one of the most significant ways to prevent disease; Dr. Nolte explains the role of insulin in the body and why having too much of it can wreak havoc on the body. Then, Dr. Nolte speaks about why caloric restriction is not an efficient way to keep weight off; in reality, keeping insulin low is a way to maintain a healthy weight and prevent disease. Tune in as we chat about why intermittent fasting is excellent for your gut, and Dr. Nolte reveals some of her favorite resources for maintaining a healthy mind. [00:40] Dr. Nolte Speaks About Her Background and The Importance of Disease Prevention Dr. Nolte is a geriatric physical therapist by trade. Plus, she has additional training to be board certified in geriatrics. Dr. Nolte would see people in their sixties who were acting like they were eighty. The care and services that Dr. Nolte would provide seemed like it was too little and too late. Insulin resistance is at the core of all the conditions that Dr. Nolte treats. The longer you hold off making those lifestyle changes, the harder it will be to get healthier. The longer we continue to make poor decisions, the easier those decisions are to maintain. [10:15] The Role of Insulin In Health and Disease Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas. It is a good thing and a vital hormone. Insulin is an anabolic hormone, meaning its role is to build things up. Insulin’s role is to move blood sugar, or blood glucose from your bloodstream, into your cells to be either used as energy right away or to be stored in the form of muscle glycogen, liver glycogen, adipose tissue, or fat tissue. Exercise will reduce blood sugar. You shouldn’t focus on calories. Instead, you should focus on blood sugar for weight loss. When insulin continues to go up, your cells will become resistant to that insulin. Eventually, you will start to see blood sugars go up. Remember, 88% of adults have insulin resistance. If you learn how to live a low insulin lifestyle, you’ll lose weight and prevent disease. [22:50] Your Metabolism Will Slow Down With Chronic Caloric Restriction A fascinating study showed chronic caloric restriction slows your metabolism for six months to four years. When you return to your old eating habits, you’ll gain weight because your metabolism has slowed down. Many doctors don’t have the capacity and the resources to help their patients with nutrition. Overall, we need more proactive measures, and we need to take responsibility for our health. [25:40] Stop Asking This Question: “How Do I Lose Weight?” We are asking the wrong question. We shouldn’t ask, “how do I lose weight?” In reality, you should be asking, “how do I lower insulin?” The quality of the questions you are asking will determine the quality of your life. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, that takes an entirely different approach and mindset. Anyone who has been in the coaching business understands that mindset trumps everything else. If you don’t have the mindset in place, all other strategies will fall short. [27:25] Autosuggestions Can Help You Live A Healthy Lifestyle Here are some books that will help with your mindset: Think and Grow Rich: https://www.amazon.com/Think-Grow-Rich-Napoleon-Hill/dp/0449214923/benazadi-20

Traction: https://www.amazon.com/Traction-Gino-Wickman-audiobook/dp/B00A9Z973M/benazadi-20
The systems that Dr. Nolte learned to implement in her business are things like being accountable, being productive, and being focused. These are exactly the same systems that her clients need to stay focused and accountable towards their new healthy lifestyle. For Dr. Nolte, living a healthy lifestyle is automatic to her. She wants to help her clients automatically live a healthy lifestyle too. [44:45] Why Does Intermittent Fasting Work So Well For The Gut? To learn more about fasting, Dr. Nolte recommends Cynthia Thurlow’s work: https://cynthiathurlow.com/

Later, Kevin ended up getting diagnosed with osteoporosis in his early 30s. Kevin was devastated about his diagnosis. At the time, Kevin had gut health issues, poor energy, wasn’t sleeping well, and had high stress. So, Kevin knew he had to address everything to fix his health. Finally, Kevin got the right plan for his health and bones. [06:10] The Answer To Your Health Problems Won’t Come From The Pharmacy Kevin always thought that the answer to his health problems would come from a pharmacy or a doctor. Throughout his life, Kevin took sleeping pills, antidepressants, antibiotics, and countless other medications to help address the signs and symptoms of his condition. However, he never really received a complete resolution of those issues because he was just covering up the cause. Kevin just wanted to divest himself from thinking that the solution to his health was in a pill. [09:20] The Importance of Gut Health For Your Overall Health Your body and your bones are like plants. To grow, they need nutrients and the right conditions. Most people focus on nutrients like salads and smoothies. They’re not considering the soil. Our gut is like the soil; it is where we absorb almost everything. To absorb anything, you need roots in your soil. Our roots are called villi. They're these tiny little hairlike projections that cover our small intestine. The villi will shuttle nutrients into your bloodstream so they can travel where they are needed in your body. When you have poor digestion, you won’t be able to break down food properly. [13:45] Gut Health: Testing Your Stomach Acid and Other Options First, figure out where your stomach acid is; there are a few different tests that you can do. If you have low stomach acid, you can supplement with betaine HCl. You could also use some digestive enzymes to help break down your food. You need a digestive stool test to understand what is going on inside your microbiome. Then, you will work with a practitioner to build a protocol. Check out Gut Zoomer: https://www.vibrant-wellness.com/tests/gut-zoomer/
[15:50] Do I Have To Stop Drinking Coffee If I Have Gut Issues? Do I have to stop drinking coffee? The answer is no. The big concern is caffeine when it comes to coffee. Caffeine is going to vary slightly to increase calcium excretion. Most people don’t need to avoid coffee. Instead, drink less. If you've got caffeine intakes greater than 300 milligrams a day, calcium excreted in the urine will increase. [17:30] When Should I Get My First Bone Density Scan? The earlier, the better when it comes to getting your first bone density scan. Around 30 or 40 would be an excellent time to get your first scan. Get a scan now so you can understand where you are at. Maybe you will find out something that you can start addressing now. You can build bone strength at any age. It just gets more challenging as you get older. [22:30] Finding A Functional Medicine Practitioner For Postmenopausal Women Primary osteoporosis is typically related to the decrease in estrogen in postmenopausal women. When estrogen levels decrease as they do during menopause, it's going to cause an increase in the activity level of cells that break down bone. You need to have conversations with a functional medicine practitioner or a naturopathic physician to determine if hormones will be right for you. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy could be the right choice. [28:00] Spinach and Kale Could Be Causing Digestive Problems Oxalates are an antinutrient. Antinutrients can cause problems for people who have digestive issues. People eat a lot of spinach. If you can’t break down the oxalates, you will have some issues. Instead, you should eat arugula; it is super low in oxalates. [30:10] Why Kevin Is A Massive Fan of Coconut Oil Coconut oil is good for energy, weight, brain function, heart health, memory, skin, hair, and teeth. Coconut oil can be helpful in the protection against bone loss. Plus, it’s great because it is full of MCT; they go straight to the liver. Lastly, coconut oil has antimicrobial effects. [37:40] The Importance of Having A Strategy When It Comes To Bone Health If you rely on a single supplement, you may lose more bone because you didn’t have a strategy. Kevin will develop a strategy that addresses root cause issues. You have to get to the underlying issue! Learn about Bone Coach: https://bonecoach.com/

[06:16] Histamine Receptors and Allergies: A New Perspective on Health Disorders Allergic reactions can be immediate or delayed. The latter, often called intolerances, can occur hours after exposure to an allergen and can be harder to identify due to this delay. Histamine receptors are found throughout the body, not only in typical locations like the skin, sinuses, and lungs. Therefore, allergic reactions can affect various bodily systems. Health issues like interstitial cystitis, plaque in the arteries, and neurological conditions may have allergic components, meaning they may be triggered or worsened by allergies or intolerances. It's crucial to identify and minimize exposure to allergens, which can come from various sources, such as food, to mitigate these adverse health effects. This can be done through allergy and intolerance tests. Understanding the broader impact of allergies can lead to better diagnoses and treatments for various health conditions that might have been previously unexplained. [15:18] How Can You Manage Histamine Levels in Leftover Food? Check this out! Histamine, produced by bacteria, can accumulate in leftover food and may cause unpleasant reactions when consumed. This accumulation begins immediately after cooking and cannot be reversed by reheating. Refrigeration slows down histamine production by reducing bacterial activity. However, leftovers should be refrigerated immediately after cooking to limit histamine buildup effectively. Leftovers should be spread out rather than lumped in the fridge to speed up cooling and slow histamine buildup. This increases the surface area exposed to the cold temperature, helping the food cool down faster. Due to the potential histamine buildup in stored food, sensitive or reactive people may need to avoid leftovers until their condition is controlled. [17:37] What's the Effect of Vaccines on the Immune System that Makes a Significant Health Challenge? Long-term COVID-19 is linked to IgG4 disease, characterized by an immune system overreaction leading to tissue swelling and fibrosis. This previously rare condition is now seen more frequently due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related vaccines. Vaccines can trigger an immune response that produces spike proteins indefinitely, leading to continuous inflammation and fibrosis. This response lacks an "off switch," which presents a significant health challenge. To help manage this ongoing reaction, proteolytic enzymes, such as natto kinase and serrapeptase, may break down the spike proteins and fibrosis. Over time, lysosomes, the cellular "recycling centers," can become overwhelmed with proteins they cannot break down and gradually transform into "landfills." This shift may be a primary factor behind accelerated aging. The key to managing long-term health effects, particularly in COVID-19, is to support the body's protein digestion mechanisms and clean out lysosomes, potentially slowing the aging process. [26:16] What Dietary Adaptation Techniques Are Useful Over the Long Term? If you have a histamine problem, you can make significant improvements by modifying your environment and diet. Still, structural damage caused by inflammation from histamine may take longer to heal. Food reactivity is a spectrum, not a binary state. Some may be highly allergic to certain foods but only mildly reactive to others. Begin reintroduction with foods you are mildly reactive to. Over time, humans have selectively cultivated plants to have fewer toxins (anti-nutrients) and more desirable traits like sweetness. This has pros and cons, including the loss of some beneficial anti-nutrients. Some anti-nutrients can have medicinal value and defend against viruses, fungi, parasites, bacteria, and even cancer. Knowing which plants to avoid is crucial due to their high content of harmful anti-nutrients, like soy and spinach, which can harm our thyroid function and cause conditions such as kidney stones. A general guideline is to stay away from oxalates. [36:26] What's the Importance of Raw Meat and Protein? Raw meat contains a variety of proteins and peptides, which could be beneficial for anti-aging and overall health, which may be altered or reduced during the cooking process. Cooking meat releases glutamate, a flavor-enhancing amino acid, which can cause adverse reactions in some individuals, such as headaches or shaking. The cooking process can also lead to the creation of glycation products which can contribute to aging and other health issues. To mitigate the formation of glycation products during cooking, marinate your meat and cook with some acid, such as lemon juice. Recognize your sensitivity to glutamate. If you're not sensitive, you may only need to reduce your consumption of high-glutamate foods. If you are sensitive, more drastic dietary changes may be required for your well-being. [42:10] What's the Role of Olive Oil in Nutrient Delivery and Fuel Source? While olive oil has many health benefits due to its oleocanthal and polyphenols content, it does not necessarily negate its glycation content. Olive oil should be used in moderation, not as a main fuel source but as a nutrient delivery mechanism. This supports the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients from other foods. Balancing the intake of different food groups like low glycemic grains, beans, and fats can provide a more balanced energy source. Individuals who consume large amounts of oil may need to increase their protein intake accordingly. It's important to protect the lysosomes, cellular components involved in waste disposal, especially when consuming large quantities of a particular food. [51:53] What Are the Benefits of The Carnivore Diet? The microbiome plays a significant role in overall health and requires prebiotics for optimal function, found primarily in plant-based foods. Carnivore diets may be short-term beneficial but can lead to a lack of necessary prebiotics over time. Introducing a range of plant-based foods gradually can maintain a healthy microbiome. Lysosomes, the organelles in cells responsible for digesting fats and proteins, can become overloaded by misfolded proteins and hydrogenated fats, leading to neurologic conditions. Regular detoxification of metals and minimizing intake of misfolded proteins and hydrogenated fats can help maintain lysosomal health and aid graceful aging. Introducing substances like cyclodextrins can help maintain lysosomal health by clearing out hydrogenated fats and misfolded proteins, especially for individuals following high-fat diets like keto or carnivore diets. Robert Sikes | How to Build Lean Muscle on The Ketogenic Diet by Prioritizing Protein KKP: 629
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Robert Sikes. He is a natural ketogenic bodybuilder, author and entrepreneur as well as the CEO and founder of Keto Savage, a health and fitness company that offers coaching, training and nutrition for athletes and bodybuilders. He is also CEO and founder of Keto Brick, a company that produces ketogenic meal replacement bars for efficient nutrition with the highest quality ingredients. Sikes holds first-in-class titles from his bodybuilding competitions within the OCB and WNBF federations and lives in Northwest Arkansas with his wife Crystal. Ketogenic Bodybuilding is the culmination of all he has learned through his bodybuilding endeavors and client coaching practice. In this episode, Robert talks about how he thinks positively and has an optimistic outlook on life. Then, Robert dives into why he wrote Ketogenic Bodybuilding: A Natural Athlete’s Guide to Competitive Savagery. It’s an excellent resource for someone who wants to improve their composition while following a ketogenic lifestyle. Plus, Robert talks about increasing your protein and why he prefers to eat animal-based proteins over plant-based proteins. Tune in as we chat about being a bodybuilder without eating any carbs, the inspiration behind Robert’s Keto Bricks, and the different ways to track your health. [00:55] How Robert Has Become A Positive Human Being Robert tries to stay positive actively. He lets people see him in a positive light and be positive to others because not doing so is not conducive to growth for anybody. Eating healthy has helped Robert stay positive. At the end of the day, it’s easy for Robert to stay positive because he’s grateful. [03:20] Why Robert Wrote Ketogenic Bodybuilding: A Natural Athlete’s Guide to Competitive Savagery Get Ketogenic Bodybuilding: A Natural Athlete’s Guide to Competitive Savagery: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09QZ68MJ7/benazadi-20
This book took Robert two years to write. It’s all the lessons Robert has learned from the last seven years. Overall, it’s a great resource for people who want to improve their composition. [07:20] How To Increase Your Protein During Mealtime If you're trying to build more muscle, you may not benefit from doing an OMAD approach. In a building phase, Robert will eat two or three meals a day. Currently, Robert eats 3,000 calories a day and 220 grams of protein. If Robert had to eat all of that in one meal, he would be miserable. Robert uses My Macros+: https://www.getmymacros.com/
[09:45] What’s The Difference Between Animal-Based and Plant-Based Proteins? Animal-base is just going to be more bioavailable, and it has a better amino acid profile. You can succeed on a plant-based diet. However, you are going to have more supplements. Robert eats a lot of meat and doesn’t have any issues with it. Meat helps Robert streamline and simplify his meal prep. [16:30] How Can You Be A Body Builder Without Any Carbs? Most people didn’t think it was possible to lift hard and heavy on a low-carb diet. Plus, people told Robert that he wasn’t going to have any energy. Well, keto helped Robert improve his relationship with food. Haters will talk smack all day long; Robert doesn’t listen to it. Read Metabolic Characteristics of Keto-Adapted Ultra-Endurance Runners: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0026049515003340
[19:10] Will Eating High Protein Knock You Out of Ketosis? When it comes to bodybuilding and body composition, Robert is not really worried about people having a lot of protein. If you’re eating minimal carbs and you feel great, then you’re obviously functioning on fat and ketones. If your calories are very low, you may want to leave fat higher and decrease protein because fat is great for energy. Don’t leave protein low indefinitely. [21:50] Should You Throw Away Your Scale? How To Track Your Health Robert says, “don’t throw away your scale!” He likes to look at his weight as a data point. Weight doesn’t show the whole picture, but it does show one piece of data. Instead, your composition should be what you measure. Also, take pictures and measurements. [25:50] Why Robert Decided To Develop The Keto Brick Purchase Keto Brick meal replacement bars here: https://glnk.io/1l3/thebenazadi
Keto Bricks help Robert hit his macros more efficiently, take the guesswork out of meal prep, and it is just super convenient. It’s a 1,000 calorie meal replacement bar. Overall, it makes hitting your fat macros much easier. A lot of people have a hard time getting enough dietary fat, so it helps streamline that process. [29:10] Why You Should Consider Buying The Keto Brick There are seven full-time flavors. The top flavor is a chocolate peanut butter cup. In the future, there will be a keto brick that only has eight total grams of carbs. For 1,000 calories, eight grams of carbs is unreal! Most keto products are absolute crap, and they are not worth your time. [33:50] How To Get Started With Fitness If you're doing nothing, getting up off of the couch and moving is progress in the right direction. If you haven’t trained before, start with a push-pull leg routine. Anything is going to be better than nothing! If you are already in a legitimate regimen, then increase weight, increase time under tension, increase density, and increase frequency. [36:15] What Should You Do If You Feel Sore The Next Day? Don’t do the same muscle group again. If you just started training, you will have a week or two of muscle soreness. To get through muscle soreness, you should train through it. If you’re a seasoned lifter, you may benefit from a week where you decrease the intensity. [41:20] Should You Work Out Fasted or Have a Meal Before Exercise? It comes down to preference. Robert prefers fasted workouts. Fats take a long time to absorb; you won’t make use of those calories. Robert eats his evening meal as his “pre-workout meal” for the next day. AND MUCH MORE! [01:05] Heart Disease: The History of How The Leading Killer Disease Worldwide Began - In the early 1900s, heart disease is an exceedingly rare condition. - Eventually, it became more prominent, and in the 1950s, it reached a crisis point. - 70 years later, the solution to fight heart disease still has yet to progress. - Cholesterol was not the problem. [15:14] What Is the One Factor That Causes Heart Disease? Know Your Risk - Heart disease is not multifactorial. It just has one factor that contributes to heart disease. - In atherosclerotic heart disease, damage to the blood vessel wall is a primary contributing component. - These damages to the blood vessel are caused by common factors such as insulin resistance, smoking, and high blood pressure. - Vegetable and seed oils are also a contributor to heart disease. [24:49] What's the Connection Between Being Stressed and Heart Disease? What Should You Do? - Stress plays an important role in heart disease, and it's one of the pillars of health - The difficult part about stress is we don't have a great way of measuring it. - There's a cardiac condition called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a stress-induced heart attack. - Managing stress is a very important aspect of mitigating your risk for heart disease. [28:19] Lab Test: The Importance of Getting a Lab Assessment Into Our Bodies - The amount of cholesterol isn't the right thing to look at. We need to look at the quality of the cholesterol in our bodies. - Until you get damage to the blood vessel and the cholesterol particles, you cannot produce heart disease and plaques in the heart's blood vessels. - Push to get an NMR panel. It is not expensive and is usually covered by insurance. - You need to know a doctor who knows what they're looking at. - One test that is essential for people to get is called a coronary artery calcium scan. That scan will show us whether or not you're accumulating damage to the blood vessels in your heart. - High sensitivity C reactive protein test is another important scan patients should have. [49:57] Have You Heard About Fish Oil? Should We Take It or Not? - The reason that fish oil gets recommended is because it's thought to be anti-inflammatory. - Dr. Philip advocates for people to figure out what's causing the inflammation and eliminate the inflammation. And then we don't need anti-inflammatories like fish oil anymore. - if you aren't oxidizing things in the first place and if you aren't first inducing inflammation. Anti-inflammatory drugs and antioxidants are not necessary. - Get on a low-inflammatory lifestyle and diet; you don't need the anti-inflammatory benefits. [54:22] You are What You Eat: What Diet Should You Have to Be Metabolically Healthy? - Eat whole real food. Since the introduction of processed food, our health has worsened. - Balance your diet between eating whole real animal proteins and whole real vegetables, plants, and fruits. - Different diet strategies each have their benefits and drawbacks. - If you feel metabolically healthy in your chosen diet, continue it. If not, changes are needed to be made. AND MUCH MORE! Morley Robbins | The Hidden Reason Why You Are Tired All The Time, Myths About Anemia, & The Root Cause Protocol KKP: 627
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Morley Robbins. He is the creator and founder of The Root Cause Protocol and the Magnesium Advocacy Group. Morley received his BA in Biology from Denison University in Ohio and holds an MBA from George Washington University in healthcare administration. Morley has trained in wellness coaching, nutritional counseling, and functional diagnostic nutrition. This episode originally aired in April 2022. He is also known as the Magnesium Man due to his extensive research into and understanding of magnesium’s role in the body. Morley’s research saw him deciphering the intricate relationship between magnesium, iron, copper, and calcium as a way to free ourselves from illness and dis-ease. As a certified health coach with expertise in Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA), Morley has performed thousands of RCP one-on-one consultations, helping people feel better by getting to the root cause of their symptoms. In this episode, Morley talks about becoming obsessed with copper in the mitochondria. He dives into what you need to know about the mitochondria and how to ensure you’re getting excellent mitochondria function. Then, Morley digs deep into copper; he explains precisely why you need more copper in your diet, and the reason copper is critical for anyone following a ketogenic lifestyle. Tune in as we chat about the problem with ascorbic acid and which three things will improve your copper levels. [01:00] How Morley Became Obsessed with Copper in the Mitochondria Morley was born into a very sickly family with many illnesses. After doing medical research, Morley found that in the world of science, they separated copper from iron metabolism. In traditional Chinese medicine, copper is the general, and iron is the foot soldier. When the general is not around, foot soldiers go crazy. This is exactly what happens inside our bodies. [06:10] What You Need To Know About Mitochondria In The Human Body We've been trained to think of the mitochondria as an energy furnace. People think that the mitochondria just put out energy. There are 40 quadrillion mitochondria in our body. The average cell has about 500 mitochondria. The average liver cell has 2,000, kidney cells have 4,000, heart cells have 10,000, and a mature egg in a woman's body has 600,000 mitochondria. The cells that are primarily relied upon for survival have the most mitochondria. Morley likes to say, “ignore the enemies; ignite the energy.” Morley has learned that if you don't have copper in your diet and don't have retinol to make copper bioavailable, you're not getting excellent mitochondria function. If mitochondria cannot produce energy, they cannot recycle iron. [21:30] Ferritin In The Body and The Reason You Need Copper To Stay Healthy There are four different forms of ferritin in the body. There are two principal flavors: heavy chain and light chain. Whenever you see the phrase heavy chain, it means copper is involved. The light chain is expressed most extensively in the liver. The heavy chain is expressed chiefly in the heart. There is also serum ferritin. Many people believe that ferritin in the blood accurately reflects what's happening inside cells. However, when you get serum ferritin high, you toxify the liver. When you suppress copper in an animal's diet, iron will rip up in the liver. [32:20] We Need To Make 2.5 Million Red Blood Cells Every Single Second 70% of the iron in the body is in hemoglobin. There's a recycling system for iron called the reticular endothelial system. Every second of every day, we need to make 2.5 million red blood cells. In 24 hours, we make 2 trillion red blood cells. It only takes 24 milligrams of iron to support that level of production. [39:50] The Reason You Need More Cooper on A Ketogenic Diet if you ferment sugar without oxygen, you get two units of energy. If you oxidize the sugar, you're going to get around 34. If you oxidize fat, you’ll get 140 units of energy. 90% of the energy comes out of the mitochondria. It does not take a lot of copper to run our body; copper creates energy. If you're going to have a keto diet, you better have a healthy supply of copper. The metabolism of fats is copper-dependent. You cannot digest copper in your diet if you don't have fat in your diet. [48:10] Ascorbic Acid Is Destroying The Bioavailability of Copper Ascorbic acid is not the whole food vitamin C complex. Ascorbic acid is a prooxidant, whereas vitamin C molecule complex is an antioxidant. Ascorbic acid blocks the absorption of copper. You need to know that ascorbic acid, vitamin D, and zinc destroy the bioavailability of copper. When you destroy the bioavailability of copper, iron rises in the tissue. [57:40] How You Can Get More Copper Into Your Body Through Diet We need to lower the iron footprint in our bodies and increase the copper footprint. You need a mineral base in your water and in your foods. Also, eat more real food that is organically grown. Plus, more fat will be essential. Get more cooper from bee pollen, real vitamin C, and grass-fed beef liver. There is much more beta carotene in the grass than in oranges and carrots. Also, to deal with stress, you need to have more magnesium in your diet. AND MUCH MORE! Resources from this episode: Check out The Root Cause Protocol: https://therootcauseprotocol.com

[00:17] Using Light to Improve Mitochondrial Health: A Biohacking Paradigm Shift Light, particularly infrared and red light, can significantly impact our biochemistry by enhancing mitochondrial health. It's an area worthy of more widespread understanding and use. The absence of health-boosting technologies like light therapy in common establishments reveals a gap in our healthcare system, highlighting the need for broader dissemination and commercial application of such health-promoting interventions. Understanding the interplay between diet, particularly keto, and biohacking strategies like light therapy can lead to more effective ways to improve health. Our perception of the sun as merely an object in the sky belies its critical role in regulating our biochemistry and overall health. Its radiant energy, especially in the infrared spectrum, profoundly influences our well-being. Infrared light, constituting over 50% of the sun's energy spectrum reaching us, has unique properties that allow it to penetrate the skin and influence deeper tissues. This highlights the potential of targeted infrared therapy to improve health at a cellular level. [11:56] How effective is red light therapy? Hormesis, a pivotal concept to practices like the keto diet, fasting, cold exposure, and red light therapy, underscores that more is not always better. Optimal benefits lie in striking the right balance. Individuals may react differently to red light therapy, dependent on their current mitochondrial health status. It's essential to consider personal health background while designing a red light therapy regimen. The 'Goldilocks zone' for red light therapy isn't necessarily about longer exposure but the suitable duration leading to positive effects. Self-observation is crucial in optimizing the use of red light therapy. Noticing and understanding the body's response to therapy can guide frequency and intensity adjustments. Red light therapy can be effective for acute conditions, such as muscle contusions, by applying it right after the injury and before bed to stimulate recovery during sleep. Regular application over a period is usually beneficial. [26:21] Red Light Therapy: What Is It? A Complete Guide for Beginners Photobiomodulation, or red light therapy, isn't just beneficial for muscle repair or athletic recovery but has a profound impact on gut health due to the high concentration of light receptors in the stomach. Photobiomodulation on an empty stomach can stimulate the gut microbiome and improve overall digestive health. Implementing red light therapy into daily routines, such as morning meditation, can help reset the circadian rhythm and foster mindfulness. Red light therapy can be effective for women experiencing menstrual cramps and reproductive health issues like endometriosis. Understanding and harnessing the concentration of mitochondria in different body organs can lead to optimized benefits from photobiomodulation, promoting overall health improvement. [28:13] Is the sun an important healthcare resource or a global threat? The sun, often villainized due to skin cancer risks, plays a crucial role in our health and well-being, providing the body with an all-natural healing source. Although political motives exist to block sunlight to solve global warming, it's important to consider the implications of altering our natural light environment. The sun provides a full spectrum of light which contributes to the concept of photobiomodulation, which suggests that all light impacts our body differently. Near-infrared light, which the sun provides, is closely linked with mitochondrial function, demonstrating its critical role in human health. Acknowledging and discussing the significant influence of our 'light environment' on our overall health and well-being is essential. [39:59] Safety, Contraindications, and Best Practices for Photobiomodulation Photobiomodulation is generally a safe technology, studied extensively for safety, making it suitable for many users. People with recent tattoos, particularly dark ink, should be cautious about using photobiomodulation due to potential skin sensitivity. Cancer patients and pregnant women are typically advised not to use such technology, not due to proven harm, but because ethical restrictions prevent comprehensive studies in these groups. Users should avoid looking directly into the device for an extended period because infrared light, being invisible, can harm the eyes without triggering the blinking reflex. While the FlexBeam can be used on the face for a warm glow and potential skin benefits, they are primarily designed as powerful recovery tools, not beauty devices. [43:30] The future success of Photobiomodulation There's a growing paradigm shift in health approaches leading to more acceptance of photobiomodulation, though the term itself might not be widely known. The market could become flooded with cheap, ineffective products as the therapy becomes more mainstream, creating the risk of photobiomodulation being dismissed as a hyped trend. The advent of red light therapy as a cosmetic application, particularly facial masks, could further dilute the perception of the technology, potentially associating it with superficial or low-quality products. The future success of photobiomodulation may depend on how effectively its practitioners can differentiate quality, effective treatment devices from less beneficial products. AND MUCH MORE! The average rate of uric acid in America right now is six. People with high uric acid levels have an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s. There’s a relationship between these diseases and uric acid. Uric acid directly leads to insulin resistance. [19:30] Your Body Is Retaining Uric Acid As A Survival Mechanism We tend to retain uric acid. Our uric acid levels can be higher as a survival mechanism, thanks to our primate ancestors. We don't hibernate for six months. Therefore, we don't need to be storing this fat for the winter that never comes. 88% of American adults are metabolically unhealthy. Getting Covid is associated with a 40 to 60% increased risk of type two diabetes. Individuals with higher uric acid levels have a higher risk of dying from Covid. [25:10] Your Body Can’t Handle More Than Five Grams of Fructose At A Time Your body can handle some fructose, about five grams at a time. When your body is presented with high levels of fructose, it overwhelms what the body can do. When fructose is delivered in the context of fiber, it slows the absorption. So, it’s better to eat an apple than drink apple juice. Vitamin C aids in uric acid excretion. The most common way to overdo fructose consumption is by drinking fruit juice. A 12-ounce glass of orange juice might have 30 grams of sugar. There's no way the body will be able to deal with that appropriately. [35:30] Tart Cherries As A Remedy For Gout and Lowering Uric Acid Levels Tart cherries have been researched for decades. Originally, tart cherries have been looked upon as a remedy for gout. It has been noted that people who ate cherries would have fewer gout flare-ups. Tart cherries are pretty darn effective in lowering uric acid levels. [36:40] The Health Benefits of Drinking Coffee Drinking coffee is associated with a dramatically lowered risk of Alzheimer's. Coffee is also associated with lower uric acid levels. Plus, coffee reduces inflammation, upregulates antioxidant function, and improves detoxification in the body. Also, coffee helps us grow new brain cells, no matter our age. [41:45] The Relationship Between Animal-Based Protein and The Role of Uric Acid Fiber is so essential for human health. Most of Dr. Perlmutter’s food is plant-based. Regarding our uric acid story, certain meats or animal products are worse than others. Organ meats, sardines, anchovies, and scallops can raise your uric acid levels. The most significant issues for uric acid are fructose, purines, and alcohol. [48:20] Should I Follow A Ketogenic Lifestyle If I Have Gout Attacks? The most significant player in gout is fructose. When you research how to fix gout, there will be no talk about removing sugar or fructose from your diet. The human requirement for sugar in our diets is zero grams per day. We subsidize the growth of corn from which high fructose corn syrup comes from. We are supporting the diseases that are sucking up our healthcare resources. Diseases are significant money makers for the healthcare industry. It’s time we start thinking about prevention. [52:25] What Role Does Mental-Emotional Stress Play With Uric Acid Levels? When we are experiencing stress, our ability to make rational, forward-thinking decisions is compromised. When your decision-making is compromised, you won’t be making good lifestyle choices. Therefore, under stress, you will eat more foods that have sugar. Eventually, you will raise uric acid levels and feed the flame of poor metabolic health. It is time to make better decisions by lowering your stress levels. AND MUCH MORE! Resources from this episode: Check out Dr. David Perlmutter’s Website: https://www.drperlmutter.com/

In this podcast, Fasting, Keto, Protein and Keeping it Simple, we cover: Controlling Your Appetite and Cravings During Fasting The Connection of Protein, Muscle, and Weight Loss Can Keto Be Simple? Ditching the Complicated Diets Practicing Self-Love and Discovering Your Superpower Controlling Your Appetite and Cravings During Fasting Raise your hand if you’ve craved something sweet while fasting…we’ve all been there. In this episode, Ben and I discussed a few reasons behind these cravings and how to overcome them. Ben suggests that the cravings could be due to not being fat-adapted yet. Our brains may panic when glucose drops in a fasted state because the ketones are not present. It sends signals to our body to get some carbs that fulfill that desire. I recommend using fasting to pulse into a ketogenic state and then pulse out. What this means is that each time you go into your ketogenic state, it’s healing something. If you get into that space, and suddenly your cravings go up, hang in there as long as you can and then dip back into food. And each time you go back, it gets easier and easier, just like going to the gym. It’s important to note that every fast has its benefits, so if you did reach for that snack, there’s no such thing as a failed fast. When you put yourself in a healing state, you can’t fail. Understanding the type of craving you’re having, whether it’s a sugar craving, an adrenal issue, or a thyroid issue – you can support your body by adding more good fat and protein, eating more calories, or doing more 24-hour fasts. Protein, Muscle, and Weight Loss If you’re looking to build muscle and lose weight, you might want to pay attention to how much protein you’re consuming. It’s recommended to consume between one to one and a half grams of protein per pound of body weight. But if you fall short of meeting this requirement, using essential amino acids can be beneficial in filling these gaps. As we age, particularly during menopause, our bodies start to break down muscle to get amino acids if the adrenal glands are overworked. To combat this, protein cycling may be the answer – this involves consuming 30 grams of protein several times a day, combined with a lot of amino acids, to maintain muscle mass. Consuming more than 90 grams of protein risks turning it into glucose, which could impede weight loss. It’s important to note that this applies to one meal, so consuming over 90 grams in a single setting is challenging for most people. Can Keto Be Simple? Ditching the Complicated Diets If you’re tired of trying all the complicated diets and grabbing every new supplement that comes along, here’s a solution: simplicity. In this episode, Ben and I discussed that often the natural healthcare system and biohacking world can be sometimes overcomplicated to the point where it’s as confusing as the conventional healthcare system. For instance, if you want to get into ketosis, the best way is to start fasting. You don’t have to count macros or purchase pre-packaged keto food. You can start simply by compressing your eating window and leaving long times for fasting to see if you can get into ketosis. Instead of counting macros, you can switch to nature’s carbs. To simplify your approach, start with small changes that you can easily incorporate into your routine, like a daily walk or simple breathing exercises. It’s important to not get bogged down in the details and to remember the ultimate goal of improving your health. Practicing Self-Love and Discovering Your Superpower This year, I’ve promised myself to practice more self-love when I can and encourage you to find the time to give back and nurture yourself too. Ben shared in this episode that the daily self-love practices that help him feel grateful for his health and well-being are keeping a gratitude journal on his nightstand to taking breaks throughout the day to relax and read. To implement these ideas into your own life, you can start by incorporating simple self-love practices into your daily routine. This can include writing down a list of things you’re grateful for each day, taking breaks to relax and do something you enjoy, or simply reminding yourself of the things you love about yourself. Gratitude has a profound way of helping shift your mindset and improve your overall well-being. This can involve writing down things you’re grateful for, expressing gratitude to those around you, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the good things in your life.
