62: Use The Poses To Get Into Your Body, Rather Than Using Your Body To Get Into The Poses
Why do you practice postures?
Today and over the next 3 episodes let's explore what it really is that we are doing when we do yoga. Is it to reach a goal of flexibility? Is it to be present in the body? Is it to tune out from life for an hour in a day? What if all perspectives can be valid and appropriate and the real aim is to develop your inner authority that knows which perspective is in alignment for you? I'll share insights from all the way back at my very first yoga class and how that continues to shape my practice and perspective today, as well as thoughts from my mentors, historical teachers, the source texts of yoga and modern science. Look forward to sharing with you!

59: 9 Types Of Cues To Include In Every Class
Join the Cue With Confidence course at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence
A little challenge I’ve had for myself over the years is to figure how to say as much as possible about a pose in as few words as possible
- while also speaking to all levels of students and giving them options so the class feels personalized
- while also integrating anatomy and philosophy lessons that are relevant
- while giving lots of space for the student to have their own experience and listen to their body’s needs.
There are infinite ways to cue a pose and I encourage you to find your own and I’ve found dozens of cues and really efficient phrases that do all of the above - distilling 10 years of trial and error as a teacher into 2 1/2 hr workshop I’m teaching in the Cue With Confidence Workshop.
Today I’ll share how to frame this through 9 types of cues that great teachers include in every class. This is not something that is traditionally taught in teacher trainings, but something I have observered from 12 years of practice and 10 years of teaching. Listen in to hear about these cues and how they can significantly improve the quality of your classes and the experience of your students!
We all know to cue with the breath. Inhale, do x. Exhale, do y. This is a great foundation but there are 8 other types of cues that you can easily include in every class to give students a much more well-rounded experience while integrating all aspects of yoga beyond just the poses. I'll teach you when, why and how to include all 9 types of cues, no matter what style of yoga you teach.

58: Why Cueing Is The Most Important Skill of Teaching
Join the Cue With Confidence course at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence
Nearly all yoga teaching is happening online right now. Teaching online creates a lot of unique challenges:
You can't use physical assists.
You can't always see your students clearly.
Students need to hear each word you say clearly
You can't go over to talk to students 1-1
Every word you say matters more than ever
Cueing is the most important skill for yoga teachers to develop, especially if you're teaching online, and this workshop will address all of these needs. With these skills you can build a thriving online yoga community and livelihood.
In the book "The One Thing" they ask the question "What's the One Thing I can do / such that by doing it / everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" - in teaching yoga I believe the one thing you can focus on that makes everything significantly better is cueing. A new student coming to your class can know within minutes wether you they would come back or not. They know because of your cues. An experienced student will keep coming back because your cues add insight and depth to their practice. As a teacher, nearly every word you say from the beginning to the end of class is a cue that is either clear or unclear. Clarifying or confusing. So how do we define what a cue is? Have you noticed there are different types of cues? What are some examples of effective vs ineffective cues? I'll share in today's episode.

57: Say This To Immediately Improve Your Cues
Join the Cue With Confidence course at http://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence
Last week I shared 6 of the most common mistakes that new teachers make with their cues. Today I will share what I suggest to do instead. These suggestions will help you create more clarity in your teaching and help your students focus on their practice of embodiment and presence in your classes. With experience and practice you can become great at cueing and be able to say just the right thing at just the right time.
To review last week, the common mistakes I'll follow up on are:
Using passive instructing
Not using trauma informed language
Teaching too fast
Requiring students to look at you
Not managing your state before you teach
Being self conscious
I'll share about these and 6 more common mistakes at the upcoming workshop. I'll also share the 9 types of cues to include in each class. You might already do some of these without knowing it, and may be missing some of these without knowing it. Including all 9 helps you create a more well rounded class that better serves your students. Learn more and enroll now at https://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence

56: 6 Cueing Mistakes That New Teachers Make
What you say matters. Especailly as a yoga teacher, every word counts. Sometimes just the smallest variation of how you say something can completely change your student’s experience of what you said. A phrase that you feel is helpful could come accross as unclear, confusing or potentially even triggering of past trauma. Sometimes we say too much or too little. With experience and practice we can learn to say just the right thing at just the right time.
Today I’ll share some of the most common mistakes that new teachers make, including:
Using passive instructing
Not using trauma informed language
Teaching too fast
Requiring students to look at you
Not managing your state before you teach
Being self conscious
I’ll share my suggestions of what to do instead on the next episode. For now, take some time to just sit with these topics and notice them in classes you teach and attend. What woudl you do differently and why? This is a great way to practice svadyaya (self study), part of the 8 Limbs of Yoga. Come to your own conclusions, then I’ll share mine on the next episode.
I’ll share in much more detail, including step by step cues and exercises for you to practice and find your way of cueing at the Cue With Confidence workshop: https://www.quietmind.yoga/cuewithconfidence (promo code for you below)

54: Inside The Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training (Starts Next Week!)
What makes a YTT stand out? Why would you pick one over another? With 17+ years in wellness I have learned what makes an exceptional Teacher Training and that is why I initially created the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training in 2019.
Today I share some of my absolute favorite and most essential insights from the whole 200 hour program - from anatomy, to philosophy to ayurveda to trauma informed teaching and everything in between. I cover a lot of ground and share how I weave it into classes and why it is so essential that we as teachers include all of these core competencies in our teachers so we can best serve each student we work with.
I share about my lineage of teachers from Krishnamacharya to the source texts of 1750s BCE to modern exercise science and kinesiology. It all weaves together in the beautiful space of practicing yoga and meditation. I share a quote from a QYTT Grad Patricia about why there can never be “too many yoga teachers” and why there has never been a better time to become a teacher than right now. I also touch on the business of teaching as I've learned from the lead sales training for Tony Robbins and other great teachers outside of the yoga realm.
The QYTT starts next week! Learn more and sign up at http://www.quietmind.yoga/ytt

53: How Do I Know If I’m Doing A Pose Correctly?
One of the most common questions that new teachers have his “am I doing this pose correctly?” This is a great question and really important to know if you're going to teach that pose. What do you look for? What should it feel like in your body? Is there really even just one correct way to do a pose?
There are some important questions to consider when we're talking about a posture. First of all, whose standards are you following? Some lineages of yoga say that you have to do chair pose with your knees together and arms overhead. Other lineages say that you should adapt each pose to the individual student. Which one is correct? Is there a place for both?
The word alignment gets thrown around a lot in the yoga context, but what does it really mean? It's really understand the postures we need to answer these questions and decide on what standards we are following and how we are choosing to define ‘in-alignment’ vs ‘out of alignment.’ Often these definitions are not as clearly defined as you might think.
How can we define alignment? How can we know if a pose is correct or incorrect? Is that even a context that we want to frame our teaching in?
I'll share 5 questions to consider that I teach about in my Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training to help you feel confident practicing and teaching all of the most common poses. Once you understand how to apply this to one pose you start to see how it applies to all poses.
Whose standards are you following?
How do you define Alignment?
What are the common misalignments in this pose?
What anatomical actions are happening in the pose?
What are the possible progressions of this pose?
These are things I weave into everything I teach in the Teacher Training, the Quietmind Yoga Podcast and the Quietmind Yoga Membership. If you find this helpful, leave a review on Apple Podcasts or send me a message on Instagram @jeremy.quietmind
