059 Scott Iardella: Gaining Strength To Let Go Of Old Weight

For anyone new to the gym who’s looking to gain the strength to let go of old weight, lifting barbells can be intimidating, but not just because of the sweat that’s involved. In a fitness industry of macho-messaging, loud gym floors, and creepy dudes drinking protein shakes, the exercises can sometimes be the easiest thing to deal with. As with any new challenge, the hardest part is pushing through the uncomfortableness of a new environment to begin. From the incredible benefits of strength training for supporting fat loss, longevity, and mental clarity, today is the perfect day to start training no matter how long you’ve waited or how awkward it may feel. On this week’s Wellness Force podcast, strength coach and movement teacher, Scott Iardella, shares his life’s work on the importance of strength training and tips for how busy moms, women, and men alike can add it to their wellness journey. “Strength training does not have to be this intimidating factor that keeps us from the gym or from being the healthiest that we can be each day. With the right approach and the right guidance from a trusted coach or mentor, there can really be more benefits to strength than just your muscles.” - Scott Iardella Strength training is a phenomenal way to boost metabolism, lose weight, stay healthy, and be strong. To help you get started with your weight training, Scott has shared with with us several of his top exercises for gaining muscle. If you’re looking for a place to begin or even to add some body weight exercises during your busy day, you’ll want to note down Scott’s tips for future reference. Scott himself suffered from a major low back injury at a young age when he was training as a bodybuilder and had to learn the hard way to allow himself to recover and follow a specific program to get back to a healthy state. If you do have a sports injury, it’s okay to pull back and not push through intensive exercises and training. You need to allow time for  your body to heal so that it can perform at its very best again. Unless you have an injury or are unable to perform certain exercises, when it comes to strength training, there shouldn’t be anything holding you back. Work hard, take a break, and keep pursuing your goals. Common Myths of Strength Training for Women When women begin to think about strength training, many are afraid of gaining too much muscle and bulking up at a fast pace. However, unless a person is training specifically to become a bodybuilder and over consume food to have a higher daily calorie count, it’s next to impossible for a woman to become too bulky. Along the lines of being afraid of gaining too much muscle, many women believe that they need to do intense lifting at the very start of a strength training regime, but actually all you need to do is to keep it simple. There’s a reason why simple exercises have been used by people for so many years and it’s because time and time again, they work. However, for some women, they have no interest on becoming stronger and that’s okay. But it is important to understand that strength training can help you be fit and healthy for the long run. Even just doing a couple minutes of it can boost your self-confidence and well-being. Why Strength Train? What are the Benefits for Weight Loss and Longevity? Besides becoming stronger, there are so many benefits to strength training including weight loss and longevity. Many people believe that all you need to do to get into shape is to do daily cardio as your entire workout. However, aerobic workouts and strength training really go hand in hand. In fact, including weights can increase your metabolism throughout the day and greatly helps increase weight loss. If we want to continue to be strong as we age, lifting weights and doing other strength exercises are very important because we naturally begin to lose our muscle tissue once we get to 30 years of age. If we want to live longer  in addition to being healthy with a less risk of injury, strength training is an easy and effective form of exercise to increase those chances. Four key, simple fundamental lifts include a push, pull, squat, and hinge movement. To ensure that you do each exercise correctly, be sure to have the right movement, stabilization, and mobility. Exercises has to be individualized to fit your needs and ability. Keep your workout simple and don’t push yourself outside of your limits to avoid injury. It’s always a good idea to find a suitable personal trainer that is well credited and fits your approach to training. More about Scott Iardella Scott Iardella is a strength coach, movement teacher, podcaster, and author of the NEW book, The Edge of Strength. With a one-of-a-kind background as a strength coach, athlete, and former physical therapist, Scott is known as a fitness innovator and a scientist in the area of strength and performance training. He’s recognized for engineering powerful, no nonsense training programs that increase strength, build muscle, and enhance athleticism while preventing wasted time and frustration with ineffective or irrational exercises and programming. 058 Rob Dionne: Staying Healthy On The Road

The Reality: Traveling Can Keep You From Being Healthy and Fit When we're at home in our city and we have our weekly healthy routine, it's easy to focus on our goals, eat well, and get enough exercise. However, traveling can get in the way of ways and put us off course from continuing to be healthy and fit. But, as Rob Dionne, Fitness Professional and host of the Open Sky Fitness Podcast, will explain in this podcast, you don't have to let traveling get in the way of being the healthiest that you can be at the end of the day. In fact, there are many small steps you can do before or during a trip to ensure that you stay focused on eating right and getting a workout in when you can while traveling. 5 Key Steps to Staying Fit & Healthy While Traveling On today's show, Rob Dionne shares with us how to stay healthy when traveling with 5 key steps. 1. Call Ahead to Different Restaurants and Gyms in the Area Use different online resources such as Yelp, Uber, and more to find and get to the restaurants that provide the food that you want to be eating to stay fresh and healthy. If you're always traveling to the same city, keep that list of restaurants with you as a good resource for the future. In that list, including a couple of restaurants that are open late at night so you have the opportunity to eat healthy whenever you want. 2. Stop Playing the Victim Card Take the time to do a quick workout in either your hotel room or gym. Continue to do exercises that you do on a regular basis at your gym or with your personal trainer. Take control of your situation to find time and space in the day to work out and eat healthy including taking the stairs at the airport or hotel rather than the escalator or elevator. 3. Bring Healthy Food with You When You Travel Start your vacation strong by not throwing yourself off course with an unhealthy meal. It's very tempting to eat at fast food places while traveling via airport and on the go, but you can easily fix that by bringing your own healthy snacks with you through security and on the plane. Eating a meal before you travel will also help keep hunger pains at bay. Make sure you keep up your water intake as well. No need to buy an expensive bottle of water at the duty-free section of the airport terminal. Just bring an empty water bottle and fill it up once you pass through security. Before you leave for your trip, try to have some prepared food at home for quick and easy batch cooking. Traveling can be very hard on our stomachs and if you have pre cooked food or ingredients waiting at home for you in the freezer, you can cook a quick and healthy meal once you get back. 4. Know Yourself, Know Your Triggers Know and address your triggers while planning for your trip. Think ahead of time about what food at the airport will make you want to eat unhealthy or why you will decide to not workout during your trip. When you understand yourself, you can plan what food to eat while you travel and when you can fit in some fitness to continue to stay in shape and reach your goals. 5. Create a Goal for Yourself Sign up for an event or make a goal for yourself or with others so that you have an obligation to eat healthy and workout daily. With all fitness goals, be sure to set an end date that you can look forward to seeing health results.   Resources Mentioned in the Show Listen to Rob Dionne's Open Sky Fitness Podcast Learn more about healthy food batch cooking at home Get a chance to win Rob's giveaway this week! 057 Chef Kat Humphus: The Recipe For Connection

Award winning Chef and entrepreneur Kat Humphus is on a mission to save the art of at-home cooking by making eating savory, healthy foods more simple.  The uncomfortable data is in: with the speed of modern life, men and women collectively are spending less time at the stove than ever before. Everyone knows that eating healthy trumps exercise, yet 6 out of 10 people in the country don't ever make time to cook food for themselves. When looking at the continuum of behavior change and the skill it takes to push eating healthy into the fold, there couldn't be more reasons to throw in the towel. But as Chef Kat explains, cooking healthy food at home isn't about being perfect and burning hours of time on your feet, it's about adding the right ingredients to your food and in your community to help support you along the way.  Hungry For Connection What makes cooking more fun and habit-forming? Connection. Not just to the food and where it came from, but to the people in our lives we cook for, including ourselves. What we need now as a society is for food to be something revered, not just ordered from a window. But the paradigm shift back to the art of cooking healthy as an act of self-care is under massive attack. Large food companies, who have made an absolute killing on the country's susceptibility for laziness, aren't helping either. The same corporations that make billions on packaged foods are now capitalizing on the market for GMO ladened and poor nutrient quality "packaged meals." With free time on the decline, the demand has been especially strong for what are called "fresh prepared foods," meals prepared in a nameless warehouse and then served at grocery stores, bodegas, and mini-mart's around the country. Sales of these nameless, tasteless, and obesity yielding foods now spike above $25 billion annually that point towards a lack of cooking skills in parents are also on the rise.  Turning Up The Heat In The Kitchen The reasons for the slow death of cooking in America are many, but a few big flames stand out. For one, women, who traditionally have carried the brunt of the cooking load, are working more than ever, and therefore spending less time cooking at home. In 2008, women spent 66 minutes per day cooking, almost 50 minutes less than in the 1960s, when they spent upward of 112 minutes on average. Men, by comparison, are actually spending a bit more time at the stove, albeit only a meager eight minutes more. So men have hardly made up the difference. As Chef Kat explains, making healthy cooking simple is just the first step, and what will really make the difference for busy families is adding in the the right ingredients at the right time. More About Chef kat Katherine Humphus is a classically trained Chef, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France. After working in Manhattan kitchens under famed chef Wylie Dufresne at WD-50, she also cooked under world-renowned chef Thomas Keller at The French Laundry in Napa. Upon returning to her hometown of San Diego, she began working under the Cohn Restaurant group umbrella, opening up 3 restaurants as Executive Chef—BO-beau kitchen + bar in 2010, 100 Wines Hillcrest in 2012, and BO-beau kitchen + roof tap in Long Beach in 2014. Chef Kat has been honored with the title of Best Chef 2014 by the Peninsula Beacon, in addition to winning Top Female Chef by Riviera Magazine and also Best Local Chef 2012 by Ranch & Coast Magazine. Now back in San Diego with Kat’s Kitchen Collective, she cannot wait to bring exquisite cuisine to the everyday kitchen. 056 Josh Trent: Wellness & Genetics BONUS Episode

BONUS episode for a ten minute bite this week! Today, we're talking about your wellness and genetics. Yes, predisposition towards health complications do exist, but from the collective consciousness in regards to lifestyle modification, saying that genes keep you fat takes the power of positive change out of your hands. Remember when you were 7 years old and you got caught drawing with crayons on the wall in your room? What was your first response? Either fully own up to it or, most likely at that age, peel back and dive into 100% denial. When it comes to our wellness in the modern world, the national food system, personal health choices, and nutritional habits have officially become the crayons. Do you mindlessly graze on carb-packed foods throughout the day in a stress response to elevated cortisol? Do you feel like the meals you eat could possibly be an escape from a day filled with stress, deadlines, and lack of sleep? WELCOME TO THE 21ST CENTURY You are not alone. In the currently health-jaded society, our mechanized, homogenized, and pasteurized system cannot be the scapegoat for you to place blame on any longer. If you’re willing to spend enough quiet time by yourself in yoga, meditation, or breathing, completely removed from the distractions of the outside world, your intuition will tell you that the only thing holding you back from feeling and moving better is you. This ten minute bite podcast was crated to inspire you to take the action and accountability needed for your dreams – whatever they might be. Step outside the box for a minute with me and get a little bit closer to feeling the way you deserve to feel: amazing. HUMANS OF THESE MODERN TIMES We learn the benefits of denial at an early age. It comes in many forms but always has one strong anchor: it doesn’t serve our true needs. We all tend to place blame on others from time to time; our thoughts and actions miss the authentic boat. The path of least resistance is all to easy and holds no accountability to our true desires when it comes to health and wellness. We ask ourselves early in the wellness journey at some point before the awakening: “Am I just a product of my genetics?” Western medicine would like you to believe so, but after the past 10 years of coaching I can instinctively and intuitively say no. “The mind only believes what you want it to believe and the body will always follow in tow.” – T.u. Late one night, I had to go get water at my local grocery, when I ran into one of my old gym members from Mission Beach. Her shopping cart was filled with the usual suspects- bread, soy, dairy, chips, cakes and pasta. You can always tell a lot about a person by the way they shop- where they are going and where they have been. When asked about her health goals, she told me about quitting the gym and doing a master cleanse the week before. You know the drill, cayenne pepper, lemon juice and a lot of BS. Its another one of those week long diets where you starve yourself and go into ketoacidosis only to regain all of the lost weight plus 3 lbs. GENETICS & BELIEF “It’s in my genetics Josh, I just can’t lose weight, I’m going to get a lap-band consultation soon,” she says while reaching for a 2 liter of Diet Pepsi. My heart sank as I talked to her a little about HFCS, food to hormone cues and gave her my card; it’s up to her to give me a call now. As I walked away I realized the odds of me hearing from her again, with her victim mentality, were worse than trying to get a match to light in a thunderstorm. It’s not that she has completely given up, it’s just that she has temporarily lost hope. All the motivation she had for better health used to power her enough to run an emotional marathon. All she can do now is sprint the curves and walk the straight-aways. People are like that when it comes to changing, especially in regards to what they eat. The supplement industry has made an absolute killing on people like this. Xerox a picture of a six pack spray tanned bikini model holding a fat burner bar on a magazine cover and you’ll make a HUGE profit capitalizing on someone out there who is uneducated and demotivated; they’re willing to try anything quick just to feel hope again. So why does the uneducated follower repeat this obviously insane process of yo-yo dieting and calorie restriction over and over again? It’s a learned behavior. CHANGE THE EXPRESSION OF YOUR GENES The old fatalistic view that your genes alone determine your fate is dead. Emerging evidence in the field of epigenetics has demonstrated that not only can we change the expression of our own genes within our own lifetime, but perhaps even more surprisingly…sometimes these changes are heritable in the form of epigenetic marks that affect even our germ line! In this PaleoFX 2014 video, Dr. Rhonda Patrick explores the intersection between genetics and environment: how things like exercise, heat stress, and fine tuning micronutrient intake can have profound effects on the way your body functions. THE INSTANT GRATIFICATION MODEL It attracts many of us shortly after birth; when we are young trust comes naturally. Modern science has shown us that we learn all that is most important for behavior development in the first 7 years of life. Is it so shocking to most Americans that the eating habits of our parents are passed on to the children of tomorrow and that these children mirror everything we do? It’s no surprise that those who have trouble losing weight in their adult lives are most likely just repeating a pattern that was learned from their parent’s lifestyle. I’m not 100% blaming the parents as we know every human has their own free will. We grow into adolescence and further into adulthood by developing an alternate way of living and beliefs compared to when we were young. However, it is common practice that a cobbler’s son becomes a cobbler himself. If I was biased about this then look at the data from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services– “Looking at the long-term consequences, overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults, which increases to 80 percent if one or more parent is overweight or obese. In 2000, the total cost of obesity for children and adults in the United States was estimated to be $117 billion ($61 billion in direct medical costs).” “Furthermore, the probability of childhood obesity persisting into adulthood is estimated to increase from approximately twenty percent at four years of age to approximately eighty percent by adolescence, and it is likely that these obesity comorbidities will persist into adulthood.” GET CURIOUS The question we have to ask is if our genetics or behavior is the cause of obesity. Well, the jury is out, and it’s obviously not just the genes; it’s our learned behavior. So how do we make drastic changes to an obviously broken system? Speak. Go out and talk about it! Become informed, don’t settle for the mainstream media high-carb & low-fat diet schemes! The change anyone wants for better health simply just comes down to education. Any learned behavior can be unlearned and refreshed if you put your mind to it. According to the National testing laboratories in Bethel, Maine- Humans learn the fastest, and have the most retention, when teaching others at 90% followed by a close second of 80% when practicing themselves. All the way at the bottom there is no shocker that we only retain 20% of what we see when learning. This is why reading about being healthy and losing weight is no replacement for getting off the couch and failing till you get it right! Or happen to know a wellness professional who is passionate about results. Just like the woman in the grocery store we all have choices; some are easier than others. If you have hope take an active role in getting excited, then you have all you need to start the next cycle of recommitment. Finding true health again is relearning all those feelings we are taught by the path of least resistance to ignore. 054 Michael Tamez: How To Lose 100 Pounds By Finding Your Authentic Self

Whether you're a supportive coach or a person on the wellness journey looking to lose 40, 50, or even 100 pounds or more, the light at the end of the tunnel can sometimes seem dark. Hours on the treadmill. Counting calories in MyFitnessPal. Starving yourself. But what if losing weight had less to do with diet and exercise and ultimately was more about the emotional intelligence you have in your most authentic self? Finding Your Authentic Self From doing the powerful inner-work, letting go of his past, and changing his behavior, Holistic Health Coach and Author Michael Tamez was able to shift his functional relationship with food and realize his most authentic self to lose over 100 pounds. Michael Tamez is a certified holistic health coach and the author of "Transformative Nutrition" The Ultimate Guide To Healthy& Balanced Living." He's stopping by Wellness Force today to share his 15 year story of overcoming severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure, advanced gum disease, and going through layers of self resentment to then transcend and transform his life to let go of a surreal amount of weight. Hiding Behind The Fat At age 20, Michael was morbidly obese, had severe obstructive sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and advanced gum disease. By coming out of hiding and facing the anger in his heart, not only did he lose 100 pounds and reverse all of those lifestyle related health conditions, he also transformed the dysfunctional relationship he had with food, his lifestyle, and his true self. This health transformation experience was intensified when he lost five family members within eighteen months. Because of the tremendous impact of these losses, Michael was forced to have major mental, emotional, and spiritual breakthroughs in some the most difficult times of his life. After experiencing all of these life transforming deaths, he was highly inspired to write an empowering book about life. In Michael’s book, Transformative Nutrition: The Ultimate Guide to Healthy and Balanced Living, he describes his influential health journey in detail. Having been on the other side of balance, Michael can relate very closely to what people deal with when it comes to weight issues and lifestyle related health imbalances. Healthy And Balanced Living His unique and progressive approach is not just for people who want to lose weight or eat healthier; it is intended for anyone who wants to establish a functional, healthy relationship with their body, meanwhile impacting every area of their life. Michael's mission is to inspire a permanent shift in the way people eat, think, feel, live and love. More from Michael's Work: "Unless you address the underlying causes of being overweight in the first place, the weight is most likely going to eventually return. The second question is going to take some work. That is what my whole book is about. People don’t become overweight overnight, do they? I know I didn’t. Therefore, they aren’t going to become skinny overnight either. Even if someone could magically wake up 50 pounds lighter, do you honestly think all of the negative mental and emotional attachments to being overweight will disappear? I can tell you from my permanent weight loss journey of initially losing almost 70 pounds over the course of the first year, those attachments took many years to break free from even after losing the weight." 052 Jeff Sanders: Dominate Your Day Before Breakfast

Jeff Sanders is a public speaker, productivity coach, best selling author, and host of The 5 AM Miracle Podcast. Today on the show, Jeff spotlights how to take bold action, help us take charge of our mornings, and dominate our day before breakfast. Dominate Your Day Before Breakfast Personally, my wake up is 7am, but not everyone is a lark by nature and sometimes there just isn't enough time in the day. There have been many days where I make an elaborate 'to-do list" only to end up adding 15 more. Can you relate?  But getting up at 5am isn't the only way to tick all the boxes. As Jeff describes on his website, there is a process and a method to quiet all the distractions by the simple, yet powerfully effective act of writing things down on paper. 051 Gretchen Rubin: The Secret To Habit Change

When it comes to health and wellness, there is nothing more powerful than our habits. But in this modern, busy, sometimes even crazy world, what is the real secret to habit change that we all can apply? Does it matter for better wellness that you get up early, never take a bite of vanilla cake again, do crossfit or go running? Or is your tendency type so fixed so that you can eat what you want and still be healthy? In this episode, we'll get the answers to all these burning questions and much more, as we uncover the secret to habit change with #1 New York Times Best-selling Author, Gretchen Rubin. The Secret To Habit Change  I sat down with world famous author Gretchen Rubin last week in the Wellness Force studio to dive deep into a powerful question: Why do we do what we do? What came next over the next 60 minutes was powerful knowledge and tools extracted from Gretchen's 10+ years of research to help us better understand our habits and behaviors so we can show up more vital, healthy, and fit in our lives. Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Our wellness force is the energy source that fuels us to be our very best. So today, we're tapping into, and getting more clear on your wellness force. Gretchen Rubin: Make or Break Your Habits Gretchen Rubin is the author of several books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers, Better Than Before, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home. In Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives, she provides surprising insights and practical advice drawn from cutting-edge research, ancient wisdom, and her own observations, about how we can make our lives better than before. She investigates the multiple strategies she’s identified that help us make and break our habits. After all, habits are the invisible architecture of a happy life, and when we change our habits, we change our lives. The secret to changing a habit? First, we must know ourselves, so we can suit our habits to our own nature. It was Rubin’s longstanding interest in happiness that led her to the study of habits, because when she talked to people about their happiness challenges, they often pointed to a habit that they couldn’t make or break. This pattern made her ask, “When and why can people successfully change a habit—or not?” What It Really Takes To Change Our Habits Many of us want to change our lives by getting rid of bad habits and adopting new habits. But changing something that is fundamental to our daily lives can be very difficult. To get insights into how we can make effective and lasting habit changes, Gretchen Rubin explains the spark that lead to her researching how to use the power of custom habits to help transform our everyday lives. On her own wellness journey and never-ending passion to master habits, Gretchen shares towards the end of the show how reading Gary Taubes book, "Why We Get Fat," dramatically increased her body and health awareness by changing her diet to low carb; which ended up transforming her life. But before anyone can transform their life, they first must deeply know themselves. Gretchen has formulated just exactly how we can tap into this self-awareness in a system she calls "The Four Tendencies." What Is Your Tendency Type? Last month, I sent out Gretchen's 4 tendencies quiz to my social circles and here were the results: 14 Obligers 3 Upholders 1 Rebel 5 Questioners Where do you fall? Does the language we use directly relate to the quality of our vitality and health? What words or behaviors can we use to anchor healthy habits that stick? On today's episode, NLP practitioner Tony Wrighton stops by Wellness Force Radio to uncover the secrets behind getting more energy and vitality through neuro linguistic programming, emotional freedom technique, and how he overcame a life-threatening illness by using these powerful tools. In addition, he's authored 19 books/audiobooks including three best sellers tied to improving your motivation, your vitality and your life. This episode is Part I of the episode II that I recorded on the Zestology Podcast. This is the episode for you if you are curious about self tracking, NLP, getting more energy, vitality and manage your moods to live a more rewarding life.  What is NLP? NLP studies how people do things well. NLP is a set of skills that improves your communication with other people (and yourself). NLP helps you manage your moods and run your own life more successfully. NLP can help with your personal development and the development of others. NLP is used a lot in business, self-improvement, sport, sales, therapy, and coaching. He does not call his methods NLP, but originally trained with Richard Bandler and there are similarities in the approach. From Sickness To Health Tony was struck down by a virus a year ago while on holiday in the jungle in the middle of nowhere and ended up having three months off work, and basically in bed. The doctors said it might be glandular fever, but they didn't really know. It was a scary time, and since then, Tony has really focused on his health and energy as he slowly fought back to full health. “I was struck down by a virus while on holiday in the jungle in the middle of nowhere.
