054 Michael Tamez: How To Lose 100 Pounds By Finding Your Authentic Self

Whether you're a supportive coach or a person on the wellness journey looking to lose 40, 50, or even 100 pounds or more, the light at the end of the tunnel can sometimes seem dark. Hours on the treadmill. Counting calories in MyFitnessPal. Starving yourself. But what if losing weight had less to do with diet and exercise and ultimately was more about the emotional intelligence you have in your most authentic self? Finding Your Authentic Self From doing the powerful inner-work, letting go of his past, and changing his behavior, Holistic Health Coach and Author Michael Tamez was able to shift his functional relationship with food and realize his most authentic self to lose over 100 pounds. Michael Tamez is a certified holistic health coach and the author of "Transformative Nutrition" The Ultimate Guide To Healthy& Balanced Living." He's stopping by Wellness Force today to share his 15 year story of overcoming severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure, advanced gum disease, and going through layers of self resentment to then transcend and transform his life to let go of a surreal amount of weight. Hiding Behind The Fat At age 20, Michael was morbidly obese, had severe obstructive sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and advanced gum disease. By coming out of hiding and facing the anger in his heart, not only did he lose 100 pounds and reverse all of those lifestyle related health conditions, he also transformed the dysfunctional relationship he had with food, his lifestyle, and his true self. This health transformation experience was intensified when he lost five family members within eighteen months. Because of the tremendous impact of these losses, Michael was forced to have major mental, emotional, and spiritual breakthroughs in some the most difficult times of his life. After experiencing all of these life transforming deaths, he was highly inspired to write an empowering book about life. In Michael's book, Transformative Nutrition: The Ultimate Guide to Healthy and Balanced Living, he describes his influential health journey in detail. Having been on the other side of balance, Michael can relate very closely to what people deal with when it comes to weight issues and lifestyle related health imbalances. Healthy And Balanced Living His unique and progressive approach is not just for people who want to lose weight or eat healthier; it is intended for anyone who wants to establish a functional, healthy relationship with their body, meanwhile impacting every area of their life. Michael's mission is to inspire a permanent shift in the way people eat, think, feel, live and love. More from Michael's Work: "Unless you address the underlying causes of being overweight in the first place, the weight is most likely going to eventually return. The second question is going to take some work. That is what my whole book is about. People don't become overweight overnight, do they? I know I didn't. Therefore, they aren't going to become skinny overnight either. Even if someone could magically wake up 50 pounds lighter, do you honestly think all of the negative mental and emotional attachments to being overweight will disappear? I can tell you from my permanent weight loss journey of initially losing almost 70 pounds over the course of the first year, those attachments took many years to break free from even after losing the weight." I ate fast food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, not caring at all about the consequences. I thought exercise was a joke, and it got to a point where I'd get winded just tying my shoes. Weight loss wasn't even on my radar." - Michael Tamez [tweetthis]"Fat loss has less to do with diet & exercise. 051 Gretchen Rubin: The Secret To Habit Change

When it comes to health and wellness, there is nothing more powerful than our habits. But in this modern, busy, sometimes even crazy world, what is the real secret to habit change that we all can apply? Does it matter for better wellness that you get up early, never take a bite of vanilla cake again, do crossfit or go running? Or is your tendency type so fixed so that you can eat what you want and still be healthy? In this episode, we'll get the answers to all these burning questions and much more, as we uncover the secret to habit change with #1 New York Times Best-selling Author, Gretchen Rubin. The Secret To Habit Change I sat down with world famous author Gretchen Rubin last week in the Wellness Force studio to dive deep into a powerful question: Why do we do what we do? What came next over the next 60 minutes was powerful knowledge and tools extracted from Gretchen's 10+ years of research to help us better understand our habits and behaviors so we can show up more vital, healthy, and fit in our lives. Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Our wellness force is the energy source that fuels us to be our very best. So today, we're tapping into, and getting more clear on your wellness force. Gretchen Rubin: Make or Break Your Habits Gretchen Rubin is the author of several books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers, Better Than Before, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home. In Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives, she provides surprising insights and practical advice drawn from cutting-edge research, ancient wisdom, and her own observations, about how we can make our lives better than before. She investigates the multiple strategies she's identified that help us make and break our habits. After all, habits are the invisible architecture of a happy life, and when we change our habits, we change our lives. The secret to changing a habit? First, we must know ourselves, so we can suit our habits to our own nature. It was Rubin's longstanding interest in happiness that led her to the study of habits, because when she talked to people about their happiness challenges, they often pointed to a habit that they couldn't make or break. This pattern made her ask, "When and why can people successfully change a habit—or not?" What It Really Takes To Change Our Habits Many of us want to change our lives by getting rid of bad habits and adopting new habits. But changing something that is fundamental to our daily lives can be very difficult. To get insights into how we can make effective and lasting habit changes, Gretchen Rubin explains the spark that lead to her researching how to use the power of custom habits to help transform our everyday lives. On her own wellness journey and never-ending passion to master habits, Gretchen shares towards the end of the show how reading Gary Taubes book, "Why We Get Fat," dramatically increased her body and health awareness by changing her diet to low carb; which ended up transforming her life. But before anyone can transform their life, they first must deeply know themselves. Gretchen has formulated just exactly how we can tap into this self-awareness in a system she calls "The Four Tendencies." What Is Your Tendency Type? Last month, I sent out Gretchen's 4 tendencies quiz to my social circles and here were the results: 14 Obligers 3 Upholders 1 Rebel 5 Questioners Where do you fall? 048 Nir Eyal: Breaking Bad Habits, Technology Addiction, & Emotional Triggers

Do you intuitively know that in order for your health to rise to the next level you first must break your bad habits? Today's guest, Nir Eyal, helps companies create behaviors that benefit their users, while educating people on how to build healthy habits in this busy modern world. Nir Eyal is a best-selling author, speaker, and behavior change jedi-master that is educating people on how to build healthy habits in their own lives. He writes for TechCrunch, Forbes, Psychology Today, and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and Fortune 500 companies. As the author of Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products Nir has taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Design School on practical insights to create user habits that stick. Are You Addicted To Technology? How do successful companies create products people can't put down? Why do some products capture widespread attention while others flop? What makes us engage with certain products out of sheer habit? Is there a pattern underlying how technologies hook us? Nir Eyal answers these questions (and many more) by explaining the Hook Model—a four-step process embedded into the products of many successful companies to subtly encourage customer behavior. Through consecutive "hook cycles," these products reach their ultimate goal of bringing users back again and again without depending on costly advertising or aggressive messaging. Why We Do What We Do With technology growing exponentially, it is no surprise that the waterfall of apps, wearables, and the internet of things have become a double-edged sword in our world. On one hand, technology has given rise to advances in human connection, expression, and productivity, while on the other, without mindfulness and intention, it can harm the most important thing we have: our health and wellness. To balance the demands of this attention-grabbing technology while still maintaining our vitality and well-being, Nir's new book profoundly uncovers the how, why, and what makes this addictive technology, well, addictive. Behavior Change Nir's blog is about the intersection of psychology, technology, and business. He calls it "behavioral design." The topics at Nir's blog encompass user experience, behavioral economics, and a dash of neuroscience. Since 2003, Nir has sold two technology companies and now help teams design more engaging products. For most of his career he has worked in the video gaming and advertising industries where he learned, applied (and at times rejected) the techniques used to motivate and manipulate users. His life's work in behavioral design has flourished from his writing, speaking, and consulting by helping companies create behaviors that benefit their users, while educating people on how to build healthy habits (and breaking bad habits) in this busy modern world. Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus John's most famous book, MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS, is the number one selling, non-fiction book of all time and the most trusted voice in relationships today. He is the author of 17 books, including The New York Times #1 Best-Selling Book of the last decade, MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS. Listen Now As John Uncovers What causes ADHD in the brain What is the biggest obstacle for optimal brain performance How to recognize if an adult has ADHD How adult ADHD causes a lack of commitment in men How ADHD lowers sex drive How Tylenol and Acetaminophen can cause ADHD How internet pronography is rewiring the brain to block love and connection Shocking Facts About ADHD One out of ten American children have been diagnosed with ADHD, One out of seven American women over 55 will develop dementia, One out of nine American students seriously contemplate suicide every year Statistics reveal a greater risk of ADHD in children of divorced parents, particularly when boys are missing the regular influence of their fathers or their mothers are unable to find happiness The Hero's Journey John's story is powerful beyond words. From his site, we find an incredible hero's journey through thresholds of being celibate for 9 years while traveling with the Maharishi Mahesh, sleeping on a beach homeless with two college degrees, to becoming the most sought after relationship expert in the world and writing the best selling book of all time. More from John's story page below: "In 1978, John's brother asked him for help from a mental hospital. His brother had suffered from bipolar disorder and he was struggling to find happiness. John had encouraged meditation for him in the past but it did not help. So John left the Transcendental Meditation movement and Maharishi and returned to the United States to try to help his brother get out of depression. John ended up in Los Angeles, California hoping to find the cure for his brother's bipolar disorder. Los Angeles had become a hot bed of new therapies like Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Neuro-linguistic programming, Hypnosis, Scientology, Primal Scream, EST, insight Seminars, Rebirthing and Loving Relationship Trainings. But first he had to find a place to sleep. John was homeless and living primarily on a beach in Santa Monica. He spent his days at part time jobs and reading psychology books in the public library. "I had 2 degrees but not much work experience on my resume. I was good at meditating for hours, teaching yoga and living simply with peace of mind," remembers John, "But those things couldn't pay all the bills back then." Every couple days, John saved enough money for a hotel room where he could take a shower and sleep in a bed. But most nights were spent on the beach. John recalls one night sitting by a fire on the beach with a dozen other homeless men, trying to teach them about God and their true purpose in life. "They said to me, 'John, we love listening to you, but we have no idea what you're talking about.' I knew I was in the wrong place and need to move on. This was definitely not my audience," recalls John......" Ask A Live Question For The Next Episode Click here to leave a voicemail directly to Josh Trent to be read live on air! Positive Affirmations Born with a possible life-threatening port wine stain birthmark, Angela was bullied throughout her childhood. Fortunately, Angela was raised by loving and encouraging parents, so that at home, she never felt any different than others. With this love and encouragement as a backdrop, she grew to learn how to have empathy for others by becoming kinder to herself. Angela says, "You can be your own best friend or your worst enemy. Remind yourself constantly of how amazing you are." She suggests putting up "I AM" signs everywhere, so you're reminded to be the best version of yourself every day. Listen As Angela Uncovers How moms can understand what their kids need, and that you don't have to be a nutritionist to lead them into health and wellness. The need to ask the right questions and understanding exactly what is happening to your body Looking within and knowing that wellness is a process; you can't achieve optimum health in one day Being specific about what you want to happen with your life, in terms of health and wellness Helping moms de-stress and reconnect with their authentic self Don't Get Fancy Angela suggests working on meeting basic nutrition and hydration. You don't need to be a nutritionist or a chef to deliver the best care for the ones you love. All is you need to do is understand what your body needs and how it reacts to the things you feed it. Think of long-term goals because truth be told, wellness is a process. As Angela puts it, you can't expect to lose weight all of a sudden if you eat a single apple today. It takes time and effort and patience - and of course, consistency. Wellness Is Happiness Being grateful is the key to unlocking a life of wellness. Angela states you'll know you've achieved wellness when there is a vibrant energy that flows through you. You don't have to be the richest, the fanciest, or the best - you just have to be at peace and at home with who you are and what you have. Moms have the most difficult time dealing with this; especially because of societal pressure - and Angela wants to remind all mothers out there that you are not alone and that you have support.
