Nina Teicholz: Wanna Avoid Heart Disease? Eat More Fat - #92

Reading the science changed Nina Teicholz’s perspective on nutrition. She’s a journalist and author who is known for her work on nutrition and health. As a vegetarian with a food review column, she had to eat red meat—exactly the dishes she stayed away from. However, upon checking with her doctor, she was surprised to find that her cholesterol actually improved. This experience led Nina to read the science behind nutrition.  In this conversation, she tells us why saturated fats are not the villain, how easy it is to fall into the trap of believing popular narratives, and through her writing and advocacy, inspires us to question what we know and seek the truth. Nina understands the cost of speaking up against the nutrition industry and she remains committed to sharing the truth. She’s not giving up on that.Quick Guide03:09 Introduction 06:27 How saturated fat became the villain11:13 Reading the science 17:38 The oils that can cause cancer and heart attack 30:37 No journalists are questioning the findings of the American Heart Association 35:44 Getting the message out there 39:15 Journalists stopped acting as the fourth estate 43:56 Average consumers need access to information51:57 Closing and contactsGet to know our guestNina Teicholz, the journalist who wrote The Big Fat Suprise, is the founder of Nutrition Coalition. Dave Feldman: Citizen Scientist Exposes LDL Cholesterol Myths - #87

Dave Feldman was an engineer on the verge of developing diabetes. In an effort to better his health, he made the decision to try a low-carb, high-fat diet. His sister and father followed suit. Dave's LDL cholesterol levels increased, but his family's did not.The different results fueled his curiosity to explore the reasons behind this inconsistency. Many people believe that genetics determines how the body processes a high-fat diet, but Daves findings challenged this notion. In this episode, Dave Feldman presents the Lipid Energy Model, how high levels of LDL cholesterol may not always equal increased risk of heart disease.  Get to know our guestDavid Feldman is an engineer who initiated the Citizen Science Foundation dedicated to advancing citizen science in the field of cholesterol and lipid research.“Metabolism is this counterbalance between anabolism, which is the building up of stuff, and catabolism, which is the breaking down of stuff. Dr. Bret Scher - How Docs can use Keto Diet as Health Intervention - #85

If the ketogenic diet can help people who struggled with metabolic and mental illnesses, how come it was never taught in medical school? Dr. Bret Scher, a trained cardiologist, completed a combined preventive and general cardiology fellowship. As a certified cardiologist, he was hesitant when a health coach advised they try keto diets with their patients. Fat is bad. But after conducting extensive research on ketosis, he became an advocate for nutritional ketosis. Despite the evidence contradicting commonly held beliefs regarding saturated fat, cholesterol, and carbohydrates, there are still those who remain resistant to the idea. In this episode, Dr. Scher explains how doctors' attitudes have changed towards therapeutic nutritional ketosis, its association with mental health, and why he emphasizes the need for the supervision of a trained clinician if one uses ketogenic diet as a health intervention.Quick Guide00:52 Introduction04:49 Ketosis changed his diet and his cardiology practice13:30 The different studies and evidence about ketogenic diet23:50 Relationship of mental health and dietary ketosis26:41 What is therapeutic nutritional ketosis?31:11 The goal of Metabolic Minds34:36 The effects of dietary changes on mental health38:52 Nutritional ketosis for non-mental health issues42:28 The mismatch between the strength of the recommendation and the strength of the evidenceGet to know our guestDr. Bret Scher is a board-certified cardiologist who specializes in preventative and integrative cardiology. Andy Schoonover - CrowdHealth is the Kickstarter of Health Coverage - #84

Andy Schoonover was frustrated that, despite paying $1,200 a month for coverage, his insurance refused to pay for his daughter's $8,000 ear infection procedure. Foregoing his insurance led him to develop a solution that could help those who are uninsured. He founded CrowdHealth. He shares that the idea behind CrowdHealth is medical health crowdfunding, which is a return to the notion of neighbors helping each other when someone is ill. Their goal is to build an alternative to the current healthcare system.  The community has the freedom to choose their healthcare providers without worrying about how much their medical procedures would cost. Members who dealt with similar circumstances even choose to contribute more. This makes Andy very optimistic that their service gives more hope for everybody to finally receive the real care that they deserve.Quick Guide01:10 Introduction05:40 How insurance works09:03 How does CrowdHealth work17:00 Taking care of the uninsured19:44 The original goal of insurance and what it has become29:01 Negotiating for a better healthcare33:12 A twisted symbiotic relationship42:02 Get uninsured and join CrowdHealth46:42 How healthcare workers can get involved52:05 An alternative healthcare system developingGet to know our guestAndy Schoonover saw the benefits of being uninsured and he developed CrowdHealth, a solution that can help uninsured individuals receive affordable healthcare.“So, you have the buyers of healthcare, which are health insurance plans, who want the price to go up. So, this doesn't take a Ph.D. in economics, if the buyer and the seller want the price to go up, guess what the price is going up, right? Hospitals want the price to go up.
