283: BONUS EPISODE: AUS Tokyo Recap: Genevieve Gregson & Patrick Tiernan

On this bonus episode we are showcasing the grit and willpower of two of our Australian athletics team members Genevieve Gregson Nee LaCaze and Patrick Tiernan. Most of us will have seen both of these athletes endure Olympic performances that they did not expect with Genevieve Gregson on the final water hurdle of the 3000m steeplechase succumbing to a ruptured Achilles. It was heartbreaking for everyone watching, later that evening, as Gen sat in the medical room with a splint on her leg she posted to social media “I'm heartbroken and don't have the words right now to respond to you all, but in short, Ruptured Achilles on the last water jump Happy Birthday me, thank you for the support and messages I'll try to respond in time for now I need to mend my heart, soul and achilles”. At the time of our catchup, Gen was just several days post achilles tendon repair, in managed isolation and quarantine and the emotions are still very raw.   In addition on this bonus episode, you'll hear from Aussie hero, Patrick Teirnan, with just 150m left to run in the men's 10,000m track final, fell valiantly, picking himself up several times to get across that finish line. The fall was out of absolute exhaustion with possible effects from the heat. You'll hear Pat outline how the 10,000m race has been one of great highs and great lows. Pat was in hotel quarantine in Brisbane, he reflects on the disappointment of getting so close to what would have been a career best performance with a certain top 10 finish in the 10,000m final before things didn't go to plan. Professor Stu embarked on a Post Doctorate at the Australian Institute of Sport and Indiana University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, following graduation from the University of Melbourne with a Physiotherapy Degree in 2001. Professor Warden's research interests focus on the form and function of the musculoskeletal system, in-particular the lifelong contribution of physical activity to skeletal health. It was published in February 2021 and it's a must read for any Coach, Athlete or Practitioner working in the field of endurance sports. In this episode we dive deep into its contents: What the author's mean by bone workload Optimal workload to induce skeletal adaptation The fact that not all athletes have good skeletons Why it is that distance running does not build good bones How we can use periodisation to help build more bone The effects of early specialisation with sport and the contribution to bone stress injury risk Why it is that optimising bone structure is critical and how it only develops before puberty How it is that we can positively affect our bone density and bone architecture through loading with multiple direction jumps and why it is only during puberty that this is possible How we can positively increase the robustness of our skeleton through bone centric exercises How we can try and minimise training errors to avoid the onset of a bone stress injury, a stress fracture a stress reaction or similar Show Sponsor: Precision Hydration If you've ever struggled with hydration issues like cramp during long, hot sessions, it's worth checking out precisionhydration.com. 278: Expert Edition: Amy Harding (PhD) Researcher, Menzies Health Institute, Griffith University; Exercise & Bone Health across the Lifespan

Amy shares around how we can optimise our skeletal or bone health across our lifespan, what can we do pre puberty, what can we do as adults and what can we do post menopause and as Amy states MANopause for the blokes in order to ensure we have optimal skeletal health in lower likelihood or mobility associated with low bone density or poor bone health such as osteopenia or osteoporosis. Amy works alongside former featured expert of the show Professor Belinda Beck. Amy has outputted greater than 20 publications in her burgeoning research career. In one landmark study, which she co collaborated with her Griffith University Research colleagues, Professor Belinda Beck and Associate Professor Ben Weeks was called the LIFTMOR M trial, this trial explored the effects of supervised high intensity resistance and impact training on the bone geometry and strength in middle aged and older men with low bone mass. Amy and her research team at Griffith University Men's Health Institute discovered a real dearth in the literature around the role of exercise in helping men with low bone mass post MANopause.  Amy outlines the role that exercise plays in terms of adapting our skeletons, the keys in optimizing our skeletal health pre puberty, why it's important to look at maintaining maximising bone health as an adult and then ways that we can fight the decline post menopause or MANopause in terms of our bone health. Amy shares why high intensity low repetition exercise is so important and why high repetition low resistance exercise doesn't produce the same positive results on bone adaptation. Amy encourages us that it is never too late to improve our bone health.    Show Sponsor: earSHOTS earSHOTS is a disruptive action sport headphone company dedicated to unlocking human potential through sound.  earSHOTS bluetooth headphones utilise an innovative, first of its kind proprietary magnetic ear clip design.
