From Chaos to Clarity: Decluttering and Self-Discovery w/Star Hansen

This week I’m talking with Star Hansen, a Certified Professional Organizer (CPO©) and Clutter Whisperer on a mission to help you banish your personal Clutter Monster. Her methodology focuses on helping you take control of your stuff and create a life you’re truly proud of. Star looks at the deeper meaning of your stuff to help you figure out why you feel overwhelmed by your clutter in the first place. Star’s best-selling book, “Why the F*#@ Am I Still Not Organized?”, has inspired countless individuals to tackle their clutter head-on and find lasting solutions. In our conversation, we discuss the significance of having clutter-free spaces and the impact it has on mental and emotional well-being - how clutter can create stress, affect decision-making, and hinder productivity. We also delve into the emotional attachment people often have to their belongings, how clutter can impact relationships, and how clutter can highlight personal values and emotional struggles. We can effectively create motivation with financial incentives, but often that isn't enough for us to follow through on some of the things that we really do want to do. We also need to create reminders and a plan on how we want to accomplish our goals. Don't try and do all the new things at once - pace yourself and create a plan on what you want to do first. Try and focus on doing the things that by doing them will make everything else easier. We need to be flexible with our plans because we are going to hit speed bumps - while we can't plan for everything we can work on ways to help us get back up when we get knocked down.

The basics of reducing clutter for adults with ADHD

One challenge that many people struggle with, regardless of whether they have ADHD or not, is clutter. However adults with ADHD do find it difficult to create the systems necessary to reduce clutter and stick with those systems. Dave speaks with Star Hansen better known as the Clutter Whisperer about the basics of reducing clutter in our lives.  Star is a certified professional organizer, a TEDx speaker and has a specialty in working with individuals with ADHD. Star begins discussing with Dave the reasons why many of us do not want to put items in their proper place. She says one of those reasons is that it's just not fun for us. **Do you want to work with Dave one-on-one? Go to www.overcomingdistractions.com and book an introductory Zoom chat. Or go directly to Dave’s calendar; https://calendly.com/davidgreenwood1/15min Star and Dave talk about why clutter comes down to having proper systems, overcoming procrastination and many other reasons for accumulating clutter. They also discuss why having clutter in your line of sight can affect your mood and your productivity and the reasons why. In the podcast, Star suggests never planning and doing at the same time. Meaning, if you're planning to reduce clutter and create systems, the next phase should be executing on that plan at a different time. Star also advises if you're having challenges getting started, body doubling is a great way to get the process started of reducing your clutter. Dave and Star also discussed digital disorganization such as lack of systems and appropriate computer files for work and home. Start getting organized?
