Deep dives
Stage Zero: Getting Lean
Before you can start thinking about staying lean, you first need to achieve a lower body fat percentage. This initial stage is similar to the process of rehabbing from an injury before returning to the gym. It's important to approach getting lean in a sustainable and realistic manner. Crash diets and extreme measures may yield temporary results, but a thoughtful approach that includes learning about lifestyle management and developing healthy habits increases the likelihood of maintaining a lean physique in the long term.
Stage One: Transitioning to Maintenance
After successfully achieving a lower body fat percentage, the next stage is transitioning into a maintenance phase. During this stage, appetite may increase, causing cravings and potential concerns about maintaining the achieved physique. It is important to be conservative during this phase, keeping the same structured approach to dieting and gradually increasing food intake. This helps the body and mind adjust to the changes and ensures a smooth transition into a sustainable maintenance phase or lean gaining phase.
Stage Two: Settling into New Habits
Once the initial transition is complete, it's time to settle into a new routine and establish healthy habits. This stage involves reintroducing higher calorie foods, experimenting with meal plans, and navigating social situations. It's important to push boundaries and explore flexibility within the leaner lifestyle. Understanding how to manage cravings, eating out, and finding balance is crucial. The progress and adjustments made during this stage can take around two weeks to two months, depending on individual circumstances.
Getting leaner, and reaching a new, low body-fat is one part of the challenge. Settling there and establishing that as your "new normal" is a whole new story.
Can this be done? Yes.
The bigger question is, how long does it take, and what do you need to prepare for?
In my experience, this happens in 3 distinct stages, which we're going to cover in this video.
