Maintaining a healthy gut is essential for overall health and well-being. The gut is often referred to as the 'seat of your health,' and if it is not functioning properly, it can lead to various health issues. Taking care of your gut involves focusing on the foods you eat and the quality of your diet. Consuming a wide variety of colorful fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds can provide the body with essential nutrients, fiber, and polyphenols that support a healthy microbiome.
Polyphenols are plant compounds that have been shown to have numerous health benefits. They are found in various foods such as berries, teas (like green tea), dark chocolate, herbs, spices, olives, and more. Polyphenols have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. They can help regulate the immune system, support heart health, fight against cancer, and even contribute to longevity. Including a variety of polyphenol-rich foods in your diet can promote optimal health and well-being.
Incorporating polyphenols into your daily diet is fairly simple. Consuming foods like berries, vegetables, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, and responsibly-raised meats can provide a good amount of polyphenols. Drinking green tea and enjoying dark chocolate in moderation are additional ways to add polyphenols to your diet. Remember to focus on quality and variety, and listen to your body to determine which foods work well for you.
While eliminating certain foods, such as lectins, from your diet may be helpful for some individuals with gut issues, it is not necessarily recommended for everyone. It is important to address the root cause of gut issues and focus on healing the gut. Paying attention to the quality of the food you consume, including polyphenols, can support gut health. It is essential to personalize your approach and listen to your body's response to different foods.
Leaky gut, where the intestinal lining breaks down and allows food particles and bacteria to enter the bloodstream, can lead to systemic inflammation and various inflammatory diseases. The presence of zonulin, a protein triggered by factors like cholera and gluten consumption, leads to increased intestinal permeability. As people age, zonulin levels tend to rise, indicating a leaky gut and a potential increase in inflammatory diseases. However, consuming high levels of polyphenols, probiotics, and making dietary changes can repair the gut, decrease zonulin levels, and improve overall gut health.
Polyphenols, found in fruits, vegetables, and other plant sources, have shown to have significant benefits for gut health. They help repair the gut lining, promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, and reduce the levels of harmful bacteria. The presence of polyphenols, such as those found in berries, green tea, apples, and dark chocolate, stimulates the production of short-chain fatty acids like butyrate. Butyrate serves as fuel for the colon cells and offers various health benefits. Including polyphenol-rich foods in one's diet can lower inflammatory compounds, increase butyrate production, and promote gut healing and overall health.
The gut microbiome plays a role in every disease, so why aren’t we doing more to protect and restore it? One third to one half of all Americans have gut issues due to the constant consumption of industrialized foods, glyphosate, food additives, and more. This is a problem—and it’s time for us to take action.
In this episode of my Masterclass series, the first in a series on gut health, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the importance of polyphenols for our gut health. We also discuss my gut-health journey, which led me to dig deep into understanding the value of a healthy gut and diverse microbiome, and how to get there.
