The episode touches upon Josh Waitzkin's journey from a chess grandmaster to a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor. Waitzkin emphasizes embracing individuality and a passion-driven approach. His book, 'The Art of Learning,' illustrates his unconventional path to mastery. Waitzkin's philosophy of 'doing it your way' resonates in various disciplines, emphasizing authenticity in one's endeavors for achieving greatness.
The discussion highlights the struggle of limited feedback in investing and the need for real-time evaluations. Analogies to sports training, specifically Josh Waitzkin's approach, introduce the concept of mastering micro-skills before macros. Strategies utilizing somatic feedback, linking decisions with physiological states, are explored to accelerate learning and enhance decision-making abilities in investing.
The narrative focuses on identifying exceptional businesses that drive significant returns over time. The importance of quality overquantifiable value is emphasized, aligning with the premise of finding a few rare standout companies. The commitment to holding exceptional businesses that inherently grow and redefine portfolio impact underscores the significance of recognizing and nurturing high-quality investments for long-term success.
Noticing the lack of dependency on approval signals in a meeting with executives, the speaker highlights the importance of independent decision-making and empowerment within the team. This contrasts with another scenario where the chairman's dominant presence stifles the CEO's ability to freely engage, ultimately leading to a significant loss in business value.
Emphasizing the need for aligning investment portfolios with personal values and investment philosophies, the speaker reflects on the contrast between outspoken, leveraged CEOs and founders like Mark Leonard or Warren Buffet who prioritize transparency, ownership, and long-term value creation over flashier, high-risk strategies. The discussion underscores the significance of building portfolios that resonate with individual perspectives and risk tolerances.
Drawing from the philosophical concept of dynamic and static quality, the podcast delves into the need for businesses to balance innovation and stability. By exploring the notion of quality as an interplay between dynamic creativity and static reliability, the speaker prompts reflection on how businesses navigate change, traditionalism, and the pursuit of excellence in decision-making processes and strategies.
Chris Cerrone, a Partner at Akre Capital Management, stops by The Business Brew for a discussion about his investment philosophy, simplicity, the definition of quality, and much more. Chris’ paper, The Art of (Not) Selling, really made an impression on Bill. This discussion follows up on that paper, among other topics.
Prior to joining Akre Capital Management in 2012, Chris served as an equity research analyst for Goldman Sachs & Co. in New York from 2010 to 2012. In that position, he covered restaurant and retail companies. He began his investment management career in 2007 as a junior equity research analyst with Century Capital Management in Boston. Chris graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in economics from Tufts University.
Bill really enjoyed listening to Chris talk about how Mr. Akre would push Chris to find the essence of a business. That enables an analyst to then focus on THE most important question.
