Deep dives
Medieval Europe in the 7th Century
In the 7th century, medieval Europe was marked by various regional powers and conflicts. The Byzantines controlled the southeastern part of Europe, while the Lombards and Visigoths vied for control on the Italian and Iberian Peninsulas respectively. The British Isles saw the migration of Germanic peoples, and Scandinavia was home to North Germanic tribes and Avars venturing into the European continent. Despite the fall of Western Rome, Europe remained a center for learning and education, with monastic movements and church clergymen contributing to written scientific records.
Islamic Expansion into Europe
The Islamic expansion in the 8th century impacted Europe significantly. Umayyads from Morocco took control of the Iberian Peninsula, wiping out the Visigothic Kingdom. Christian resistance in the north of the peninsula, known as Asturias, would set the stage for the gradual reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The Umayyads also clashed with the Franks, but their expansion into Europe reached its limit when they were defeated by Charles Martell at the Battle of Tert in 732. The Umayyads consolidated their rule in the Iberian Peninsula, while Charles Martell became the effective ruler of the Franks.
Conversion to Christianity and the Rise of Kingdoms
During this period, Christianity played a significant role in shaping Europe. Leaders sought conversions to strengthen their rule and form alliances. Rollo, a Viking warrior, was granted land in France in exchange for protecting the Seine River from Viking raids. The conversion of Viking tribes, as well as other nations like Hungary and Poland, added to the spread of Christianity. The rise of nation-states like England, France, and Germany, led by powerful rulers such as William the Conqueror and Otto the Great, set the stage for the formation of recognizable medieval European kingdoms.
600 - 1085 - The modern nations of Europe begin to emerge as populations civilise, populate and Christianise. The Papacy becomes central to European politics.
