The Vikings and the British Isles

The first major raid that put the rest of Northern Europe on notice was the destruction of the Northumbian monastery at Lindisfarne in 793. A Viking named Rurik headed east into the deepest regions of the Baltic Sea, where he would traverse the waterways of northwest Russia. The Vikings showed particular aggression towards the British Isles, not just by raids, but also by landing with intent to settle. They didn't see themselves as a united nation, but as separate tribes, with the label Viking being somewhat of an exonym. One of the biggest lasting legacies of the Vikings came back to their raids on Paris when the West Francian king Charles the Simple granted the Viking warrior Roll
