The Umayyads and the Iberian Peninsula
The Umayyads took control of most of the Iberian Peninsula in 7th century. Remnant Christian forces managed to defend a small area of land called Asturias. This would be the basis for the gradual Christian request of the peninsula throughout the Middle Ages.
