The Umayyads and the Iberian Peninsula

The Umayyads took control of most of the Iberian Peninsula in 7th century. Remnant Christian forces managed to defend a small area of land called Asturias. This would be the basis for the gradual Christian request of the peninsula throughout the Middle Ages. Charles Martell was the effective ruler of the Franks despite the fact that there was a king, but the king of the Franks was just a king in name only and took very little part in political affairs.
