The Spectrum of Curiosity: Shallow vs Deep Curiosity
Curiosity can be categorized into shallow and deep curiosity. Shallow curiosity is about attaining or extracting information, while deep curiosity involves going beneath the surface and asking powerful questions that reveal more about a person. Shallow curiosity focuses on simple questions like 'What's your name?', while deep curiosity seeks to understand the story behind a person's name or the deeper meaning of concepts like home or work. Deep curiosity fosters connection and transformation.
The Dive Model: Building the Muscles of Deep Curiosity
The Dive model, outlined in the book, seeks to build the muscle groups of deep curiosity. D stands for detach, letting go of assumptions, biases, and certainty. I and 10 focus on preparing the mindset and setting for curiosity. V emphasizes valuing the dignity of others and oneself. E encourages embracing hard times, which is when deep curiosity is most beneficial. By practicing these muscle groups, individuals can exercise their deep curiosity and create a virtuous cycle of enhanced curiosity.
The Limits of Curiosity: Setting Boundaries and Extending Grace
Curiosity has limits and requires setting boundaries. While curiosity is valuable, it is crucial to recognize cases where curiosity may be dangerous or harmful, such as when personal safety or mental health is at risk. Each person has their own level of comfort and discomfort, and it is important to reflect on boundaries and know when to protect oneself. However, extending grace to others and embodying curiosity can also lead to understanding and fostering a more curious world.
Part two of a wonderful conversation with curiosity activist Scott Shigeoka. Scott has just released his new book SEEK: How Curiosity Can Transform Your Life & Change the World.
In this second episode, we focus on a few of his favorite practices, including "Quicksanding" -- how to survive those scary, suffocating moments by slowing down. We explore how we can honor the limits of our curiosity and appreciate curiosity's cardinal directions: inward, outward, and beyond. Finally, I revisit a conversation with Jenn Seiff, whose training in yoga echoes so many of Scott's insights. It's a lovely pairing.
