Treat Underlying Cause
- Identify and treat the underlying cause of DKA.
- Look for occult sepsis or other serious problems like pancreatitis.
Troponin Use
- Troponin should be checked judiciously, only if MI is suspected based on EKG and history.
- Avoid routinely checking troponin on all patients.
Insulin Infusion
- Start insulin infusions immediately unless the patient is hypokalemic.
- If hypokalemic, aggressively replete potassium before starting insulin.
