Boundaries are essential for maintaining healthy relationships and personal well-being. They are described as value-based, invisible lines that indicate what individuals will accept and expect from others. Establishing boundaries helps prevent feelings of resentment and disappointment that arise when those limits are violated. When healthy boundaries are set, individuals can clearly communicate their needs, creating a foundation for respect and understanding in their relationships.
Types of Unhealthy Boundaries
There are two primary types of unhealthy boundaries: overly closed boundaries and overly open boundaries. Overly closed boundaries often result in individuals keeping others at a great distance and experiencing feelings of detachment and isolation.
