Reverse Relationship between AFib and PE
- Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is commonly understood as a consequence of pulmonary embolism (PE).
- However, the reverse relationship, where AFib might be a risk factor for PE, is less explored.
AFib and VTE Risk
- Studies show a higher incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE), particularly PE, in patients with new-onset AFib.
- This risk is most pronounced within the first 30 days of AFib diagnosis, with hazard ratios ranging from 2.2 to 11.8 across studies.
Right Atrial Thrombus Formation
- Autopsy and echo studies reveal the right atrium as a site of thrombus formation in AFib patients.
- This challenges the assumption that deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the sole source of PE, as only 50% of PE patients present with DVT.
