The Curious Clinicians

CHAPTER

The Association Between Atrial Fibrillation and PE

Hannah, I would think with some data supporting that there actually is an association between atrial fibrillation and PE. And one of the other pieces of evidence was autopsy so many decades ago in which a rightrial thrombus present compared with 1% of patients who don't have AFib. So it seems like there are probably a lot of confounders between the type of person who is in the first six months of just having or the first 30 days of just new AFib. Are there other sort of supporting evidence or mechanistic evidence? There's no reason not to be concerned about your patient being treated for pulmonary embolism if you're already suffering from this condition.
