Developing Grit in the Pursuit of Goals
Grit is a core competency of skill and self-belief necessary for goal achievement. In the daily grind, it's common to feel frustrated and question if the goal is too ambitious or if we should quit. However, it's essential to recognize that this challenging phase is a natural part of the process. To stay in the game, we must have metrics to measure progress, maintain confidence in our abilities, follow protocols and policies, take care of our physical well-being, and show leadership to ourselves and our team. By persevering, taking one step at a time, and paying attention to the metrics, we can overcome the daily grind and reach the breakthrough point where belief in our ability to achieve our goals strengthens.
The Importance of Endurance and Persistence
Endurance and persistence are vital qualities in challenging situations. Examples from the Tour de France and world tours demonstrate how athletes endure extreme physical and mental limits. When facing moments of weakness, it is crucial to focus on taking one pedal stroke at a time, step by step, until the finish line. There are no free passes or exemptions from the daily grind, but by acknowledging its inevitability, staying committed, and constantly moving forward, we can break through to the point of belief and achieve extraordinary things.
Remembering Your Strength and Progress
In moments of weakness, it is essential to remember our strength and how far we have come. No matter how challenging the journey, we have the ability to not only survive but thrive. By honoring our progress and never letting weakness convince us that we lack strength, we can tap into our inner champion. It is important to maintain belief in ourselves, never forget who we truly are, and share our successes to reinforce our own learning. By teaching others what we have learned, we solidify our own knowledge and continue the cycle of growth and achievement.
Grit is what you need to keep pushing past your comfort zone. Only there does real growth take place. In this episode, I speak with my friend, Dr. Jeff Spencer, about developing grit.
