The Power of Hooks in Copy and Music
The introduction of a piece, whether in music or copywriting, serves as the crucial hook that captures the audience's attention. In music, this often sets the emotional tone, while in copy, it grabs the reader’s interest before delivering the core message. Writers can utilize various styles of hooks and headlines to evoke curiosity or cultivate a sense of urgency. Recognizing the emotional dynamics at play is important, as effectively engaging the audience from the very start can greatly influence their desire to continue engaging with the piece.
The Emotional Journey of Verses and Story Arcs
Just as verses in a song set up the narrative and stakes, the opening sections of sales copy establish the reader's problems and desired outcomes. This structure is vital in both songwriting and copywriting, where repetition and familiarity aid comprehension. Concepts such as the 'golden thread' in copy can be likened to thematic elements in a song, creating a cohesive experience. Additionally, the notion of a story arc in both song and copy underscores the importance of emotional journeys that resonate with the audience, driving them to take action.
Building Intensity: The Crescendo and Call to Action
The structure of a song often leads towards a crescendo, which can be paralleled to the buildup in sales copy that culminates in a strong call to action. In music, the rhythm may increase in tempo to heighten anticipation, while similarly, effective copywriting should engage the reader progressively. Including multiple calls to action throughout the piece caters to varying consumer readiness, akin to the different listening experiences of various song phases. This approach not only maintains engagement but also capitalizes on the emotional peaks to prompt immediate decision-making.
Have you ever heard a song and thought,
“Dang! How did they do that? I wish my copy was that catchy!”
Well, Nathan and I have thought the same thing and in fact pondered the similarities between writing a song and writing copy.
You see, we’re both songwriters. We stoutly assert that we are both amateurs at this.
At one point, music was Nathan’s business.
I never got that far. It’s always been just a hobby for me.
But I have studied and tried intently. Just turned out that wasn’t my path.
However, once you start with music, you can’t leave it.
Or, it never leaves you. So we both live with music inside us, all the time.
And today, we thought we’d talk about what we learned from songwriting and how a great song compares to a great piece of copy.
