Deep dives
Courage, Perseverance, Adaptability, Resiliency in Grit
Courage is the frequency with which one steps into fear and discomfort, accessing a dopamine reward; perseverance is the ability to keep moving consistently through challenges; adaptability is the capacity to adjust in changing circumstances; resilience is getting back to baseline swiftly after facing highs and lows, enabling one's growth from challenges.
Situation Awareness, Compartmentalization, Task Switching, Learnability in Mental Acuity
Situation awareness involves vigilance and perceiving surroundings; compartmentalization aids in focusing on crucial tasks in environments such as SEAL training; task switching is efficiently transitioning between tasks as required; learnability signifies the speed and effectiveness in acquiring new knowledge or skills.
Courage - Stepping Into Fear and Discomfort
Courage involves stepping into fear and discomfort, accessing the courage switch to receive a dopamine reward; the attribute is defined by how frequently one confronts anxiety and fear, not necessarily by the intensity of fear experienced.
Perseverance - The Ability to Persist Through Challenges
Perseverance indicates the capacity to consistently endure and push through obstacles, symbolizing the ongoing effort towards overcoming adversity; however, excessive perseverance could lead to burnout if not balanced appropriately.
Adaptability - Flexibility in Adjusting to Changing Circumstances
Adaptability refers to the capability to modify and adjust behaviors or strategies in response to varying situations; being adaptable allows for enhanced problem-solving and effective responses to evolving environments.
Resilience - Returning to Baseline After Highs and Lows
Resilience focuses on swiftly returning to a baseline state after experiencing highs or lows, permitting the individual to maintain equilibrium; the ability to bounce back efficiently from adversity plays a crucial role in overall mental strength.
Antifragility - Growing Stronger from Challenges
Antifragility involves not just bouncing back from challenges but actually growing stronger as a result of adversity; individuals with antifragility benefit from challenges by using them as opportunities for personal growth and development.
Engaging in Hormesis Through Physical Exercise
Engaging in physical exercise involves inducing stress on the body, leading to hormesis, where the body becomes stronger through stress and recovery. The key to improving physical strength through exercise lies in allowing adequate recovery time for the body to adapt and grow stronger.
Importance of Adaptability in Challenging Environments
Adaptability is vital for thriving in changing environments. Successful adaptation to varying circumstances, like a frog that can live both in water and on land, demonstrates the importance of flexibility and resilience in remaining functional and thriving despite external challenges.
Essential Attributes for Effective Leadership
Successful leadership demands attributes such as empathy, selflessness, authenticity, decisiveness, and accountability. Effective leaders value empathy to connect with others, selflessness to prioritize the team's needs, authenticity to maintain consistency, decisiveness to make efficient decisions, and accountability to take responsibility for outcomes and decisions made.
My guest today is Rich Diviney. Rich is a retired Navy SEAL officer whose career spanned more than twenty years and included more than thirteen overseas deployments – eleven of which were to Iraq and Afghanistan. As the officer in charge of training for an elite Navy SEAL command, Rich spearheaded the creation of a directorate that fused physical, mental, and emotional disciplines.
Since his retirement, Rich has worked as a speaker, facilitator, and consultant with the Chapman & CO. Leadership Institute and Simon Sinek Inc., speaking to and training more than five thousand business, athletic, and military leaders. Rich’s book: The Attributes: 25 Hidden Drivers of Optimal Performance is, I think, a must-read book for anyone involved in leadership or in the selection and hiring of personnel.
