A foundational approach to supplements for longevity includes a good multi-vitamin, fish oil, and vitamin D. These essential nutrients support overall health, brain function, and cellular repair and renewal. The multi-vitamin should have the right forms and balance of nutrients, while fish oil provides omega-3 fats crucial for cell membrane health. Vitamin D is essential for immune function and plays a role in preventing chronic illnesses. Additionally, supporting mitochondrial health with nutrients like lipoic acid, carnitine, and coenzyme Q10 can be beneficial.
In addition to foundational supplements, there are targeted supplements that show promise in supporting longevity. NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a key compound involved in cellular metabolism and energy production. It activates sirtuins, which are longevity-promoting proteins. Resveratrol, found in red wine, and polyphenols from various plant sources like green tea, turmeric, and berries, have been studied for their effects on longevity pathways. Compounds like fisetin and sulforaphane are also being explored for their ability to combat cellular senescence. However, it is important to choose high-quality formulas or ingredients from reputable companies when considering these supplements.
To support brain health, a combination of B-complex vitamins, fish oil, and vitamin D is recommended. B vitamins, including B6, B12, and folate, play a crucial role in brain function. Fish oil, rich in omega-3 fats, is essential for the structure and function of brain cells. Vitamin D supports immune function and has been linked to brain health. Additionally, supporting mitochondrial health with nutrients like lipoic acid, carnitine, and CoQ10 can further support brain function.
When considering supplements for longevity or brain health, it is important to choose high-quality products from reputable companies. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or functional medicine practitioner who can provide guidance based on individual needs and health status. Supplements should be part of a holistic approach that includes a nutrient-dense diet, regular exercise, stress management, and quality sleep for optimal results in promoting overall health and longevity.
Melatonin is not only known for its role in sleep but also for regulating other important functions related to longevity. It can reduce inflammation and may even reduce the risk of cancer. Melatonin supplements like Herbatonin, available in different doses, have gained popularity as they promote longevity and aid in jet lag or sleeplessness.
When it comes to measuring progress and assessing the impact of longevity supplements, there are various options. Traditional testing can provide important insights into nutritional states, such as blood tests for vitamin D, homocysteine, C-reactive protein, and lipid levels. Additionally, tests like glucose tolerance tests and insulin fasting levels can indicate insulin resistance and metabolic health. Newer tests are emerging to measure biological age, epigenetic tags, telomeres, and inflammation markers to assess the aging process directly.
To effectively manage cholesterol levels, it is crucial to focus on lifestyle changes and diet. Minimizing sugar, refined grains, and unhealthy fats is important for balancing lipid profiles. Regular exercise, time-restricted eating, and increasing plant intake can significantly impact lipid levels. While there are supplements available for lowering cholesterol, foundational lifestyle changes often provide the best outcomes for long-term lipid management.

Our food supply is dramatically less nutrient rich than it has ever been, and it’s taking a toll on our health. A shocking 99 percent of Americans are nutrient deficient, including over 90 percent who are deficient in omega 3 fats and 50 percent who are deficient in magnesium.
In this episode of my Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the top supplements for longevity, especially NAD, which inhibits inflammation, increases metabolism, and increases insulin sensitivity. We also discuss how to critically evaluate supplement research and much more.
