Deep dives
Early Life and Education
John Bumpus Calhoun was born in Elkton, Tennessee, in 1917. He developed an interest in bird watching and was influenced by the Tennessee Ornithological Society. Calhoun attended the University of Virginia and Northwestern University, focusing on ethology. He met his wife, Edith, during his studies.
Research Focus and Experiments
Calhoun's research focused on animal behavior, particularly the Norway rat. He conducted experiments on the 24-hour rhythms of the rat. Additionally, he ventured into studying social organization and behavior in rats and mice, exploring topics like aggression, reproduction, and social dynamics within rodent populations.
Legacy of Mouse Utopia Experiments
Calhoun's most notable work was the Mouse Utopia Experiments. These experiments aimed to simulate an ideal environment for mice to thrive without resource limitations. The results showed how overpopulation and limited space led to behavioral sink, where the rodent population exhibited social disturbances, aggression, and aberrant behaviors.
Implications for Human Society
Calhoun's studies raised questions about the potential impact of overpopulation and urbanization on human society. By paralleling rodent behaviors with potential human responses to crowded environments and resource constraints, Calhoun's work highlighted concerns about societal breakdown and implications for human interactions and mental well-being.
Calhoun's Rat Experiments in Rat City
Calhoun built a massive habitat called Rat City where he observed overly crowded Norway rats facing behavioral changes and a significant drop in population size, reflecting the breakdown of complex social behaviors under stress.
Calhoun's Mouse Universe Experiment
In Mouse Universe 25, Calhoun studied the effects of overcrowding on mice, leading to social breakdown, non-reproductive behaviors, and the eventual extinction of the population, drawing parallels to potential societal collapse in humans.
Kitty Genovese Murder and Bystander Effect
The famous case of Kitty Genovese's murder highlighted the bystander effect in urban areas, where witness apathy led to tragic consequences, illustrating potential societal deviance in overcrowded cities.
Calhoun's Conclusions and Warnings for Humanity
Calhoun's studies warned about the dangers of overcrowding in human populations, predicting a loss of reproductive drive, social apathy, and eventual societal collapse if roles and resources do not match the population demands, urging action to prevent an inevitable doom.
Unique Urban Environments
Humans live in a different urban environment compared to the rodent studies, with locking doors, security guards, and law enforcement providing privacy and protection. Technology and sound systems in dense urban areas can create personal oasis.
Differences in Social Dynamics
Human social dynamics differ significantly from rodent interactions studied by Calhoun. Humans have intelligence and technology to solve problems, unlike mice, leading to potential behavioral sink differences.
Misinterpretation of Calhoun's Experiments
Calhoun's experiments have sparked debates on socialism and societal degradation. Extrapolating human behavior predictions from rat studies is problematic due to the differences in intelligence and problem-solving abilities.
Reflection on Life's Meaning
Contemplating the significance of struggle in life brings about a realization that challenges and efforts contribute to meaning and achievement. Striving for goals, personal growth, and overcoming obstacles give life purpose and fulfillment.
Strange and thought provoking episode today! In the 1940s, 50s, and early 60s, animal behavior researcher John B Calhoun ran a number of experiments on rodents regarding how their behavior would be affected by increased urbanization if all their basic needs were made. The results were terrifying. Crowded rats and mice became increasingly violent and lost their reproductive instincts to the point that eventually, the utopia went extinct after enduring a final phase full of random violent attacks, apathy, cannibalism and more. Could the increased urbanization of humanity also lead to our species' extinction as Calhoun warned? Or are we humans too different from rodents to presume that what happens to mice and rat would also happen to humans? I found today's episode one of the most thought provoking we've done in quite some time. Hope you do too!
