Trauma can cause psychic wounds and disconnect us from ourselves. Taking responsibility for our circumstances and the imprints we carry is crucial in healing.
The book challenges the idea that what is considered 'normal' in society is healthy and natural. Illness, including addiction and mental distress, is often a normal response to abnormal social conditions.
Trauma and addiction are interconnected, with addiction often being an escape from the discomfort and disconnection caused by trauma. Recovery involves reconnecting with authenticity and addressing the underlying pain.
Attachment is a fundamental human drive to be close to another being for the purpose of being taken care of or taking care of the other. It is an essential relationship for birds, mammals, and humans, especially during infancy and early childhood. The need for attachment is lifelong, and the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted its significance. Failure to have authentic attachment experiences in childhood can lead to suppressing authenticity for the sake of being attached, causing physical and mental health issues.
In addition to the need for attachment, humans have another drive to experience and express their emotions authentically. However, if as children we learn to suppress our emotions for the sake of being accepted, it can lead to a lifetime of seeking approval, pleasing others, and neglecting our own needs. The cost of surrendering authenticity can result in physical and mental illnesses. Self-blame is not helpful because these adaptive patterns were automatic responses to circumstances beyond our control. Instead, understanding the origins of these patterns and practicing self-compassion is essential for healing.
