The succession crisis in 1328 led to the consideration of Edward III's claim to the French throne through his mother Isabella. Despite the common belief that women cannot rule directly, the question arose whether inheritance could be transmitted to a male relative. Although Edward was a teenager at the time and Philip VI was already established in French politics, a group of elites chose Edward as king over Philip VI. Philip VI's actions, such as confiscating Edward's territories in response to his involvement in Scottish conflicts, escalated tensions between England and France.
