Emily August: Breaking Free from Diet Culture
Emily August, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Literature at Stockton University, a published poet, and a recovering food addict with 5+ years of back-to-back abstinence. Emily does not judge her recovery success in terms of health outcomes, weight loss, body size, or other diet-culture/body-image metrics. These, she argues, are the wrong focus and are, in fact, oppressive. Emily’s perspective is different from traditional food addiction and eating disorder recovery approaches and is here to hold space for those that are not served by either. This interview just might be one of the most unique I have ever conducted.Enjoyed this episode? Roberta Ruggiero: Hypoglycemia and Mental Health
This is an incredible story about recovery from reactive hypoglycemia, a condition that, for Roberta, lead to weight gain, cravings, mental health issues, medications, misdiagnosis, and ultimately time in a psych ward complete with electric shock therapy — all because no one knew she was suffering from hypoglycemia. It is a shocking story with a happy ending.Roberta, the founder and president of the Hypoglycemia Support Foundation and author of the book Do’s and Don’ts of Hypoglycemia, is now on a mission to educate others about hypoglycemia — a common condition that affects many people although they have NO idea. Symptoms include: mental illness, irritability, cravings, anxiety, insomnia, sweating, cold hands and feet and more — symptoms that can send us on a wild goose chase looking for medical solutions that can ultimately be found in a sugar-free/ processed carb-free diet and better self-care. It is caused by the pancreas excreting too much insulin in response to carbohydrates. Misunderstood and left untreated it typically progresses to diabetes. “The low blood sugar of today is the diabetes of tomorrow.” —Dr. Seale Harris In short, this interview is a wake-up call to monitor and manage our blood sugar levels and to remind us that what we eat can PROFOUNDLY affect our mental health.https://hypoglycemia.org/Enjoyed this episode? Rich Holman: Sugar is Killing You Softly
Rich Holman is a man on a mission. At the age of 72, he had a long list of medical conditions and was on multiple medications. As he likes to say, he was a “dead man walking”. It all turned around when he met a holistic doctor who suggested that he do a 21-Day Sugar Detox. This radical dietary intervention transformed his health. Six years later, Rich is in the best shape of his life and has become obsessed with helping others discover the benefits of breaking up with sugar. In fact, Rich is currently working on a book that will share the science proving the harms of sugar and will invite others to urgently stop eating processed and ultra processed carbohydrates. The pleasure of sugar pales in comparison to the pleasure of feeling great. And you cannot have both. You need to pick. Prepare to be inspired! Enjoyed this episode? Dallin Hardy: The Role that Micronutrients Play in Sugar Addiction Recovery
In today's podcast interview, Dallin Hardy, a scientist with Hardy Nutritionals, will expand upon the role that micronutrients play in both reducing stress and reducing sugar cravings. We will also discuss how a simple supplement can dramatically improve health and mental health issues such as depression, and anxiety. What are micronutrients?Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals we need to consume (adequately and consistently) to avoid deficiencies. Even minor deficiencies can have catastrophic impacts on our brain AND cellular health, endocrine, hormonal, and immune systems. Most of us have deficiencies. It is inevitable given modern agricultural practices, modern stress levels, and excess sugar consumption.Did you know that since the 1950s, agricultural technology has enabled farmers to plant up to 6 times as many plants per acre? This has led to fruits, vegetables, and even farm animals containing significantly less calcium, phosphorus, iron, B vitamins, vitamin C, zinc, and more.If it's not is not in the soil, it can't show up in the plant. If it is not in the plant, or animal, it cannot show up in our bloodstream. This is a HUGE problem. If you think you don't need micronutrient supplementation, think again! If you have mental health or addiction issues of any kind, micro-nutrient supplementation will be a game-changer for you.Dallin Hardy will detail the science behind the power of micronutrient supplementation to heal our brains and boost our moods. He will share the results of 30+ placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials. Many individuals supplementing with micronutrients, in partnership with their doctors, are able to de-prescribe psychiatric medications, they are that effective. Amazing!Once you have enough of the essential nutrients your brain and body need, you will naturally find yourself happier, more energetic, more optimistic, and more resilient to stress. You will also find yourself less interested in junk food including sugar.Supplementation cannot replace eating whole foods, sufficient sleep, exercise, etc. But for those of us in the early days of recovery, trying to get a grip on cravings, and trying to feel better, it can make our journey of recovery come quicker and easier.PS - Here is a link to their website. I recommend you start with Daily Essential Nutrients. If you use my referral code (kicksugar), it will get you 15% off. The quality of the ingredients, the concentration of the ingredients, the ratio of the ingredients, the combination of the ingredients, and the bioavailability of the ingredients can vary dramatically. This company, which started out as a non-profit and was only intended to heal mental illness in the immediate family, now has the world’s most science-backed product on the planet.
