RHP#114. AJ Venter, ex-Springbok Rugby Player, World Class Athlete, Mental Health Advocate, Host of Life with AJ Podcast

ex-Springbok Rugby Player. World Class Athlete. Mental Health Advocate. Smiler. Motivational Speaker. Boere Seun. Truth Seeker. Host of Life with AJ Podcast. Many young boys and girls around the world spend their childhoods obsessing over their sporting heroes and heroines. The walls of their rooms are covered with posters of these icons, and they spend countless hours in their backyards pretending to be or to play like them. It’s beyond their wildest dreams that one day, they may get to play the sport themselves as a professional, or perhaps even meet their hero in the flesh.  Our Podcast guest this week, AJ Venter, is one of those heroes whom we got to meet and speak with! AJ Venter is an absolute beaut of a human being. He grew up like many farm boys in The Free State, by spending his school time barefoot on the ice-cold and rock hard rugby pitches, and social time with a pellet gun or rifle walking the fields of their family farm in his veldskoene. Rugby was his forte and playing was a passion which just allowed him to use his finesse and skill to climb the ranks through high school, provincial levels, and ultimately on to the international stage. After school, he had the opportunity to go on his first overseas trip to Italy and ended up staying there for 3 years. He could not believe his luck, and twice a week he would get on the train and go to Venice to just walk around, all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. AJ, ended up representing his country, South Africa, 25 times in the Green and Gold jersey of the Springboks. An honour that he will forever cherish. However, all good things do eventually come to an end, and as AJ says, “The day you retire from rugby, your real-life starts.” Any transition is difficult, but one of such vast changes can be extremely tough and confusing.  Retirement, his business and financial losses, together with two divorces and other relationships not working out, resulted in self-doubt and him questioning his abilities. These ultimately led to AJ having a nervous breakdown and suffering an anxiety attack.  Thankfully with the help he received, AJ managed to turn his life around by working on his internal game and mindset, day in and day out. He created new healthy habits, slimmed down his group of friends, started meditating, stopped watching the news, and is now reaping the rewards.  AJ has used his precarious situation to help others now too. It took him around a year to open up and start talking about his problems because it wasn’t something he really wanted people to know about. However, once he opened up the door of vulnerability, he realised it was not only part of his healing process, but it allowed others to speak about their issues too….and boy did those floodgates open! Most recently he has launched his own podcast, Life with AJ Venter, where he speaks to people from all different spheres about their life experiences. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#113. Ellie Mackay, Documentary Filmmaker, Science Communicator, Extreme Environment Drone Pilot, and Founder of Ellipsis Earth

Documentary Filmmaker. Science Communicator. Solo Female Traveller. Extreme Drone Pilot. Ocean Activist. Storyteller. Biologeek. Founder of Ellipsis Earth. Humans are concurrently, wonderfully simple and strangely complex creatures. We have a habit of making our lives difficult, when the solutions are mostly basic. We seek things in faraway places, and fail to see what is under our noses. We love to hate, and struggle to love. We listen to the shouters, and ignore to hear the sages. We live and we learn, yet we forget. In many ways, we are our own worst enemies and are building rows upon rows of acquiescent robots, instead of heterodox thinkers. Our Podcast guest this week, Ellie Mackay, is a lady who spends more time in the jungle, outback, or ocean, than she does at home. If Indiana Jones were to ever meet his match then she would certainly be that lady! Growing up, Ellie's Mom would host exchange students from around the world. She got to experience people from different backgrounds, shapes, sizes, colours, races, genders, and sexualities. They would talk for hours telling her stories. Her favourite thing was to get out her atlas and ask, “So where do you come from?” She has a passion to tell the world the untold stories of the planet and also the people whose voices are not being heard. She has a special superpower which captivates your mind through storytelling. Her storytelling transcends the boundaries of the spoken word and also includes award-winning documentaries that she has filmed and directed. As a solo female traveller, she has had her fair share of near-miss moments, but also has a multitude of stories that will hold you in awe. All the travelling has grounded her soul, and constantly reminds her that life is such a privilege and something to be extra grateful for every single day. Ellie is a zero-waste living advocate, and in recent years founded a tech startup called Ellipsis Earth. By using drones and artificial intelligence, they monitor and find plastic pollution all around the world. As she explains, one of the major problems with plastic pollution is that we don’t know where 99% of it actually is!  As an activist, she will bob and weave with the best of them, but instead of delivering a knockout punch, she will invite the opposition to find the middle ground and work together. You cannot help but love this lady and the work she is doing! We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#112. Shelley Paxton, Author, Coach, Ex-Harley Davidson Executive, Chief Soul Officer at Soulbbatical

Biker-babe Chic. Author. Transformational Coach. Ex-Harley Davidson Executive. Marketing Guru. Speaker. Rebel with a Cause. Nomad. Chief Soul Officer. The coronavirus is forcing us to hit the reset button. Not tomorrow, or the next day….but right now. It’s allowing us to reflect and look deeper into our souls, and to identify what is really important in life. It seems that a new internal dialogue and conversation is being bestowed upon us to become more soulFULL. Shelley Paxton, is a mid-western gal, who was born to rebell. Chasing her Mom around the kitchen with carving knives, was just the type of delightful daughter she used to be. There was however, a brief glimmer of hope when she was a decent competitive swimmer, but that soon quickly pivoted into becoming a really good drinker, shroom taker, and socialiser. After selling her soul to the corporate world with long hours and no life, Shelley got the opportunity to take a sabbatical at only 26 years old, and travel around Europe. She managed to reconnect with her Mom on that trip. They swapped the knives for sightseeing, and enjoyed doing things like the laundry and reading mail together :)  Her career opened up when she took a role in Turkey. Everything for her was pretty much on course, she had met her future ex-husband, her career was flying and she was making a real name for herself in her industry. But often what happens is that something needs to give, and for her, it was her health. Shelley and her husband really enjoyed many great fun-loving, years together. Sadly, like with many high flying professionals, their relationship was neglected and it ended in an extremely messy divorce. It was so messy that Shelley fell into depression, and tried to commit suicide by taking a drug overdose. Once back on track, Shelley landed arguably the sexiest job on the planet, the Chief Marketing Officer of Harley-Davidson. She thrived there, however, after six years the corporate jet setting lifestyle eventually caught up and took it’s toll. She was still pushing through by eating and drinking in excess.  After leaving Harley with enough money saved in her ‘fuck-you-fund’, she embarked on a self-discovery journey of epic proportions. It spanned continents, and included excursions, retreats and some straight talking coaches. A further life-shock of her Dad suffering multiple strokes, shifted her perspective a few extra notches on what was actually important in life.  Which brings us to this present moment, where Shelley is the Chief Soul Officer at Soulbbatical. The book she authored has morphed and grown into a community and movement of like-minded soul-liberators, who are harmonising the soulful balance in the universe. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#111. Mac Brazina, Coach, Trainer, Mindset Shifter, Founder of Human Builder

Mindset Shifter. Human Builder. Professional Coach. Personal Trainer. Orator. Smiler. Entrepreneur. Community Creator. Conversation Starter. Anthropologist. Straight Talker. Each day we are all blessed with a fresh and full 24 hours. Twenty-four hours of possibility, of creativity, of rest, of peace, of space. How we use that time, each and every day, is a choice. We can succumb to the distractions and be part of the inefficient roller coaster, or we can be focused, committed, plan, and then enjoy a good sense of fulfilment each night. Our Podcast guest this week, Mac Brazina, talks a lot about ‘the other 23 hours’. You see, that one hour that you spend in the gym is important, mostly for your aesthetics and fitness. However, what are you doing with the other 23 hours in your day to really improve your overall mindset and wellbeing? Mac is still a young lady, although she is wise beyond her years. Her wisdom can be attributed to being the oldest of five siblings, coming from a lineage of ‘power women’, the hardships and shortcomings she has faced, dealing with her shadows, taking a psychedelic journey, and training her body and mind. As with many people, there is a catalyst which often initiates a downward spiral towards a dark space. For Mac, that was when her Mom was diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome, which is a degenerative disease of the central nervous system.  Mac is a firm believer in human potential. Once we begin to comprehend our mind and practice mind control, our potential becomes infinite. So, you can be anxious, you can be upset, you can be heartbroken, or in mourning, but you can still evolve and be a better person! With a change in mindset comes a change of energy, and we are at a time in our existence when, as humans, we need to embrace our feminine and masculine energies with equal proportions.  Mac, as you may have guessed, is one of those precious souls who has been sent here to help us bridge the gap between science and esoterism. To close the space between our own limiting beliefs and what is possible. To understand that we need to take control of our internal dialogues. To allow us to connect and balance our masculine and feminine energies. Psychedelics showed Mac that she wasn't a prisoner to her brain, and that her brain was not the one in control. They built a bridge of information for her spirit and physical existence to connect. They showed her what she was capable of, that she was not a victim, and that magic is totally real... A workout is the microcosm of daily life. There’s going to be reps that don’t feel great, and ones that do. Loads that seem impossibly heavy to lift, and ones that feel light as a feather. It’s all about how you approach your reps. It’s about one rep at a time. Knowing that each rep is an opportunity to dig into discomfort and reap what it has to offer you... We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#110. Beau Miles, YouTuber, Award-Winning Filmmaker, Poly-Jobist, Backyard Adventurer, and Doctor of Philosophy

Doctor of Philosophy. YouTuber. Award-Winning Filmmaker. Poly-Jobist. Hobby Farmer. Part-Time Builder. Runner. Kayaker. Woodchopper. Backyard Adventurer. Humans have always been storytellers, it’s how knowledge and traditions have been passed on from generation to generation. These days, thanks to social media, more and more people have become storytellers. Fortunately, we still have some old-school type of blokes, like Beau Miles, who completely understand the art of storytelling, and do it in a way that is insightful, mesmerising and captivating. Beau Miles’ folks taught him to be curious. He has a vague idea of the parenting that his parents gave him, but does remember it being fairly free in a sense, and that they didn't believe in boredom. In fact, they hated the idea of boredom. Beau reckons he has never been bored a day in his life, or a minute in his life for that matter. He is not sure how anyone can be bored and says that we need to get creative and fill in the gaps. Create your own fun, and create your own sense of curiosity, because you've got the potential, like any human, to go out and make something of yourself in the world...!  Until recently, Beau was an outdoor education lecturer at Melbourne’s Monash University. He thinks the modern academic is flawed by specialising in one area, because the world doesn't work that way. His aim is to live and teach about broad, complex and curious ways of living. He encourages us to challenge ourselves on small and large proportions, and to think of our daily lives differently. Beau seems like a happy guy. Although he’d argue that he is not a happy kind of person. He is however, really optimistic...a super optimist! He is not in pursuit of happiness and nor will he teach his child to be in pursuit of happiness. He wants to teach fortitude, challenge, and friendliness. He'd teach friendliness over happiness any day of the week!  Beau Miles is a hardy doer. He has a talent for building with reclaimed wood and turns garbage into gleaming treasures. Being a Dad, he now has less time to travel to far-away places and enjoys re-inventing what is closest to him. He loves to set himself challenges of epic proportions. A lot of what he does is to create awareness for others, that there is adventure, fun and learning to be had wherever we seek it. He sets off across homelands, across mountain ranges, across seas and straits, around his block and on highways to work. To him, using our bodies and hands more for everything is key. Through his physical journey, he engages in the limitless potential of human perception. Along his adventures, he documents everything and creates world-class and award-winning films and documentaries. Through his non-preachy storytelling style, he engages viewers to recognise opportunities for adventure on their own doorstep and really makes them want to be better humans too. Beau wrote his PhD on the topic of, The Secret Life of the Sea Kayaker. He also loves a banana or two. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
