Superhumanship#17 - Adventure and Giving Back - For New Age Micro-Leaders and Micro-Influencers

Superhumanship, is a bonus podcast series which we run, that is all geared towards authentic leadership. Each week we try to disseminate the wisdom shared by our guests and provide our two cents too. We believe that in this day and age, we are all leaders and all people of influence. New age leadership, is upon us. So therefore, we need to adapt and all realise we have this amazing opportunity to contribute to this shift in micro-leadership and micro-influence. This week we spoke about… Habits - How and why we both gave up coffee for 6 weeks and one month respectively…and then started again :) How travelling and adventure provides some of the best education we will ever receive Why giving back to those less privileged is important and that it can also provide you with a greater sense of purpose Bravery is something we all have within ourselves. We’ve all garnered it on some sort of level in our lives That society sometimes gives the impression that you should do something a particular way. However, doing the opposite is what might work best for you! Music By The Bambuseae Rhythm Section - Check them out here Right Hook Request HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THE PODCAST? RHP#105. Frank Solomon, Pro Big Wave Surfer, Lifesaver, Adventurer, Nomadic Explorer, Environmental Ocean Activist

Pro Big Wave Surfer. Lifesaver. Adventurer. Spear Fisherman. Professional Travelling Surfer. Nomadic Explorer. Environmental Ocean Activist.  Travelling is probably one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself in terms of your understanding of the world, and where and how you fit in. It really provides a perspective you would otherwise struggle to find in any other teachings you receive. Our guest this week has been to many corners of the globe, that others would never venture to. Often doing things at the drop of a hat, with little to no plans and very little cash. It is this adventurous spirit that has provided him with endless tales of exploration, that he can keep telling for the rest of his life.  Frank Solomon was born and grew up in Hout Bay, South Africa. Since he can remember he has been a water baby and now has a special connection with the ocean and is almost at one with it. Frank's introduction to big waves was as a result of his curiosity and cheekiness getting the better of him when he was a young 20 year old. There was a big surf competition in his ‘backyard’ at a place called Dungeons, in Cape Town. He was warned that he was too much of a novice to participate and should seek advice from the organisers for how to get involved in future years. Knowing much better than the rock-solid advice that was given to him, he walked over a mountain and paddled out to where the surfers were competing. As he explains, the waves were way bigger than he imagined and he ended up getting smoked, although he did make it back to shore safely. Back safe, he was hooked and two years later he would be competing in that exact competition! 2011 was a big year for Frank. He travelled for 7 months backpacking, using his Dad’s old Army backpack. It started off with an epic sailing trip for 68 days from South Africa to Thailand. It was also the year he also started competing in the Big Wave World Tour. To top it off, he appeared on the cover of the ZigZag surfing magazine in South Africa, which is a rather big deal in the surfing community.  In 2014, while surfing Rileys in Ireland, he fractured his L2 vertebra, and that really put things into perspective for him.  ‘Let’s Be Frank’, a movie about his life premiered in LA 3 years after the idea was thought up. That same year, 2016, Frank also got to surf the mother of all waves called Jaws, in Hawaii. An experience that not many can say they have attempted or even come close too. A good description for people that get to surf that wave is “Big Cahoonas!” While Frank continues to travel the world and surf whenever the opportunity arises, he has in recent years started an organisation called Sentinel Ocean Alliance. They currently have 100 underprivileged kids a week coming through their programme in South Africa.  Frank is an environmental and ocean activist by accident. In his way, he campaigns and raises awareness around how we can all contribute in our own little way to use less plastic, to be conscious of and take responsibility for our actions, so we can all make this world a better and cleaner place to live.  Frank is a free spirit, with a very humble and holistic approach to life. He enjoys the open road, the empty beaches, the unseen perspectives and unknown waves. And…..life keeps getting more interesting along the way.  We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#104. Sara Quiriconi, Storyteller, Content Creator, Wellness Travel Expert, and Founder of Live Free Warrior

Storyteller. Content Creator. Wellness Travel Expert. Yogi. Author. Speaker. Addict Conqueror. Cancer Survivor. Coach. Movement Specialist. Founder of Live Free Warrior  While recovery from substance abuse is not always full of success stories, those that do live to tell the tale often become mentors for others in recovery too, or at least give them hope that there is a way out. For our guest this week, Sara Quiriconi, addictions and eating disorders controlled a big portion of her life. She was to be thrown a few other curve balls that put her life into perspective and made her realise what is really important. Sara grew up in a small town called Stratford, Connecticut. She spent time hanging out and working in a ski and snowboard shop her parents owned. She learned from a young age about entrepreneurship and the values of hard work. Her first entrepreneurial experience was selling bubble gum balls for 25¢ and she would split the monthly profits with her Grandfather and brother. As a young teenager, she really desired to be more liked and often felt like she was not living up to expectations. She increasingly sought external validation and approval from others. This led to her feeling disassociated with parts of herself. She tried to control her surroundings a lot, and the perfectionist in her grew. In an attempt to control things more, her struggle with anorexia crept in. In high school, someone was giving her a neck massage and found a little lump on her neck. She didn’t think anything of it and ended up giving it a little name, Bean. Overtime, little bean started to grow more and more, to the point it was almost the size of a golf ball. At 19, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. The chemotherapy treatment, she hated. She was fearful every day about if her hair was going to fall out. As Sara says, “As a female, you really identify, even males, you identify with how you look. If you're already self-conscious about how you look and you don't like how your body is and then your hair’s gonna fall out...it doubles the, ‘I really don't like myself factor’.  Things started coming together for Sara after finding yoga! For the first time she started to FEEL again. It took ages though, 3-4 years, to really enjoy yoga. Yoga challenged her differently to other sports she was used to. It really helped her build physical and mental strength and resilience, which then started to positively impact other areas of her life. Yoga and self discovery sometimes lead to much bigger shifts and changes in our lives. We start to understand who we really are and what we really want from life. One of those for Sara, meant getting divorced and moving back to Miami. She also craved the warmth! Sara is known as the Live Free Warrior. She has written a book called Live Cancer Free, which is not only about cancer, but the other sorts of dis-eases that we have in our lives. She likes to teach people about the importance of everyday movement and has an aptly named series called Unfck Your Body! Her list of titles goes on, but the best part about this lady is that she shoots from the hip, speaks from great personal experience and articulates her message very astutely. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. RHP#103. Jared Easley, Author, Entrepreneur, Community Builder, Podcast Host, and Co-Founder of Podcast Movement

Community Builder. Author. Entrepreneur. Podcast Host. Musician. ex-Naval Officer. Dad. Storyteller. Motivator. King of One-Liners. Co-Founder of Podcast Movement. There is a difficulty in turning goals or ideas into reality. We create hurdles and barriers, then become overwhelmed and often never get out of the starting blocks. We forget our ABCs - Action Brings Clarity. Our Podcast guest this week, Jared Easley, lost his Dad when he was young. In their short time together his Dad had a major influence on him and left a great legacy behind. Jared recalls his Dad being a person of utmost integrity who always treated people well. He treated people with kindness and would never say anything bad about anyone. All great lessons that Jared would carry with him throughout life. As a youngster, Jared, was a fine musician and always dreamed of a career on stage and performing some day. Alas, it was not to be and sadly, fear and self-doubt starved him of that dream.  Joining the Navy provided him with many more lessons, ideas, experiences and friendships that he could have hoped for. Working as an electronics technician played out nicely and being stationed in Pearl Harbor was a highlight. Being based in Hawaii, he met a lot of Filipino people and fell in love with them and their culture. Jared’s wife now, Rachel, is a lady of Filipino descent. He was quite a shy guy, and after he moved to Florida, he decided to put himself out there and went to an event at a club and lo and behold there she was at the party, and the rest is now sweet history :)  Jared joined the corporate world for around 10 years. However, at some point along that timeline he started to get itchy feet and wanted to do something else, something a little more fulfilling and that gave him purpose.  In 2013, Jared started his Podcast called ‘Starve The Doubts’ - the name being quite synonymous to his own journey as it took him about 9 extra months to start his Podcast because he had to overcome certain doubts he was having! Jared also did his fair share of attending various conferences and through doing that, to his dismay, he found out that there was not a specific ‘Podcast only’ conference. After some exploratory work and getting in touch with other people who had run large conferences, Jared and his co-founder, Dan Franks, launched a Kickstarter campaign and raised $10,000 in one day. They ended up raising $30k, which was the cash and recognition they needed to create Podcast Movement. In 2018, after effectively working two full-time jobs for a few years, they went all in on Podcast Movement. He had a 6-month runway of cash, and today they can proudly say that they run the largest Podcast conference in the world and have also created a business and small team around the Podcast.  Jared, to us, is one special man who is incredibly humble. He is a master in building and nurturing communities. He has extremely high values and ethics and is the frontman for diversity and inclusion in all that he does. He is charming and sees the world in an optimistic light, which is so refreshing. Besides having an incredible story, he has a vast amount of knowledge and wisdom that he shares with us around life, podcasting, community building and being a good person. To top it off, he has a sweet sounding Alabamian accent to make you just want to listen to more. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Superhumanship#14 - Curiosity and Communication - For New Age Micro-Leaders and Micro-Influencers

This week we spoke about… Curiosity / Learning Being curious means that people are probably going to grow up learning a lot and participating in many things Having access to so much information now. We really don’t now how lucky we are!! Spending obsessive amounts of time researching things that interest you, rather than wasting a ridiculously amount of time on social media We wonder what learning languages will be like in the future with technology being able to translate things for us? It’s good to encourage learning a language, as it creates a lot of healthy brain connections in a growing child’s neurologically   Health We can only make excuses for a certain amount of things and then we really need to take responsibility in life Interesting to consider how much of how we are nature vs nurture Understanding your DNA and being aware of potential predispositions Being able to ‘edit out’ potential health issues before you are born   Organisation / Planning / Efficiencies The importance for countries, organisations, governments, libraries, etc to keep records of things What valuable information have we potentially lost out on by not keeping records of the past, or by information being destroyed? A good thing about living now and in the future is having everything recorded and online   Being Grateful How lucky we are to be living in this day and age. Less war, less famine, less poverty, greater sanitation, more forestation References: Steven Pinker and Andrew McAfee (More from Less book) Hans Rosling (Factfulness book) Understanding history to give us some sort of perspective now and for the future References: Yuval Noah Harari is on the right track. Martin Armstrong too - cycles and correlations Being grateful for when and where you were born, even if it was not the best place or best of times   People / Community How listening to the radio and reading books creates imagination Right brain activities are very important for our health and wellbeing There is something to be learnt from everyone Adjusting your conversation to suit the occasion, is a great skill and awareness to have Bridging the gaps between ideas and people Having the right support network and mentor in your career Keeping good people in your life   Communication Listening a lot more than you talk Being articulate helps to keep people engaged and to have a good debate Freedom of expression Having an opinion helps us to know what we think and it helps others know what they really think too Debating and seeking to be challenged in your thinking Investing the time in having tough conversations is the greatest compliment you can pay to someone   Life Lessons Experimenting and pushing the envelope Hard work and showing up each day Are you spending enough quality time with your family each day? How timing is absolutely everything in life Music By The Bambuseae Rhythm Section - Check them out here Right Hook Request HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THE PODCAST? RHP#102. Gareth Cliff, Podcast and Radio Host, Curiosity Seeker, Ex-Idols Judge, Master Debater, Founder of Cliff Central

Podcast and Radio Host. Curiosity Seeker. Ex-Idols Judge. Master Debater. Conversation Starter. Tightrope Walker. History Aficionado. Chemistry Geek. Founder of Cliff Central. In a world where we are generally free to express our thoughts and minds, why is it that so many of us fear speaking out? Is it because finding a safe environment in our online and anonymous world, is difficult with so many strong and conflicting opinions?  Our guest this week, Gareth Cliff, has never been one to shy away from saying what he thinks. If anyone is walking a tightrope when it comes to creating discussions around sometimes taboo, but mostly important topics, it is him. Generally, he can debate himself out of any straw-man argument and steelman his way through other tough conversations. Gareth was always a curious kid, who would try and read up and find out as much as he could about many subjects. His school trips as a teenager were spent listening to the radio when his Mom would drive him and his siblings to school. Little did he know at the time as to what sort of subconscious programming that was doing to him, and that most of his career would be spent as a radio and podcast host. In February 1998, Gareth and his friend, John Kuhn, Launched GAL (Get a Life). It was the first-ever student portal and website exclusively aimed at the South African student community. John, sadly died, and the first tech bubble burst, before they could really turn GAL into the monster they had envisioned together. This was pre-dating Facebook, so it had the potential to change the world... At 23 years old, Gareth became the youngest commercial radio morning show host in South African history. For 10 years, he also hosted the biggest commercial morning show in 5FM history, and one of two of the biggest radio morning shows in terms of revenue and ratings in South Africa at the time. People in the world like Gareth, are important because they put their neck on the line to talk about certain topics where others would never venture. He opens up the dialogue and is happy to see where it goes. His whole life he has been interested in researching many things. He has a deep fascination for history which helps him put life into perspective. Some might think it’s slightly mad, but we think it’s super cool that he has his own chemistry laboratory in his house where he can play for days and days, experimenting with different concoctions from all the elements he has available!  In 2014, he launched CliffCentral.com, an online radio station. The stream is uncensored, unscripted and unradio. He hosts a show every single morning together with many other Podcasts too.  Gareth, as Rich Mulholland puts it, “Knows a lot of sh*t, about a lot of sh*t!” It’s impossible to be bored with this man in the room. Our conversation was rich and engaging and it was an absolute honour and privilege to have him on our Podcast.  We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
