Why You Might Owe the ATO This Year! And How to Avoid It in the Future
Start Here: Why You Might Owe the ATO This Year & How to Avoid It in the Future If you were expecting a juicy tax refund this year but instead got hit with a bill from the ATO you’re not alone. Thousands of Aussies, particularly younger generations like Gen Z, are finding themselves owing money at tax time. And for some, it’s not just a few hundred dollars, but thousands. In this episode of SugarMamma’s Fireplay, I break down exactly why this is happening, how to manage a tax debt if you’ve been caught out, and most importantly, the practical steps you can take to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We’ll cover: The most common reasons you might suddenly owe the ATO, from HECS/HELP debt indexation to multiple jobs, side hustles, or even forgetting to update your tax-free threshold. Why talking openly about tax bills is important for building financial literacy and resilience. What to do if you have a tax bill from calling the ATO and arranging a payment plan, to finding missed deductions. How to stop this from happening again including setting up a separate tax account, opting into PAYG instalments, and knowing what income is taxable. Why being proactive with tax planning is one of the easiest ways to protect your financial future. ✨ The big takeaway? You haven’t failed, you’re not alone, and there’s always a way forward. A tax bill can actually be a turning point, helping you understand your cashflow, improve your systems, and build confidence in managing money. Michelle is evidence that women Do F.I.R.E. Differently - And Why That’s Our Superpower
Welcome back to SugarMamma’s Fireplay, the podcast where we explore all things financial independence, early retirement, and long-term financial freedom, with honesty, empathy, and a touch of elegance. Today, I’m so excited to be joined by Michelle, a self-employed mum of two, who, along with her husband, has been building a life of freedom, purpose and balance through the FIRE movement. In this conversation, we unpack why women often approach FIRE differently than men and how that difference can actually be a powerful advantage. We’ll talk about lifestyle design, parenting with purpose, money in marriage, and how to build financial freedom with children in the picture, not in spite of them. Whether you're starting from scratch or already on your way to FIRE, Michelle’s story is going to inspire you to think more intentionally about your own financial future and help you realise you absolutely can build a life of meaning, time freedom and wealth. Additional notes kindly provided for further clarity and motivation by Michelle: We are aiming to withdraw between $120,000-$140,000 per annum in the next two years from our portfolio so that we can move down to part-time, being 1-2 days a week of paid work. This consists only of dividends and the rent from one property we own. The long-term goal is that we'd be able to access between $280,000-$320,000 per year in passive income when we finally down tools for good. We're now thinking that that will be by the time I'm 50 and will have to include passive income from all sources (rental income from all properties, super and dividends). The value of our investments is due to have compounded to a stage then that is factored into those calculations. Closer to, we will have to do more comprehensive tax planning. ADDITIONAL GENERAL ADVICE WARNING: Whilst we discuss various financial topics, this podcast is not advice in anyway, but purely for educational purposes only.
