Mental health as a missionary

Today on Saints Unscripted, Drew Young joins us to talk about his mission, his mental health, and his new book about both topics (called ‘The Meaning of Your Mission’).    Drew had dreams of becoming an incredible full-time missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Just like members in his family, he wanted to serve full-time and had no doubt that he could do so. However, not long into his missionary experience, he was experiencing some mental health issues and began to attend therapy while in the Missionary Training Center (MTC). His mission quickly began to change. He went home early from his mission and further continued to experience a variety of mental health issues that are common in people who have come home from their missions early. How to learn the TRUTH about Mormonism

In this episode, Stephen, Justin, and Kwaku talk about the many sources of credible information about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church). There are many books, articles, and websites that talk about the Church, but which are trustworthy?    Stephen talks about the importance of reading a variety of views about the Church but being careful about the truthfulness of each source. He also mentions Joseph Smith as an example of someone who studied a significant amount before receiving many of his prolific revelations -- thus signifying an additional reason to study often.    Justin talks about the importance of critical thinking. Developing critical thinking skills isn't just beneficial for studying religious doctrine but will prove to be beneficial throughout life. Mormons Meet the Pope!!!

In March of 2019, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church or LDS Church) dedicated a holy temple in Rome, Italy. The dedication was historic for many reasons. For one, it was the first time in decades that the prophet and all twelve apostles of the Church had been to the same dedication and the first time it had ever happened outside of the United States. President Nelson, prophet and president of the Church was inspired to have the apostles all join him on his journey to Rome.   Another amazing event that occurred around the time of the dedication was the Pope of the Catholic Church meeting with the President and Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ. President Nelson had only positive things to say about the Pope. He said that while doctrines are a little different, they both share a love for humanity and religious liberty. Who were the three witnesses to the golden plates?

In today's episode, we talk about the three witnesses to the golden plates that Joseph Smith (first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) translated into the Book of Mormon.   Some people think that no other people saw the plates other than Joseph Smith. However, that is not true. Martin Harris, David Whitmer, and Oliver Cowdery were the three witnesses to the plates (along with many others, both men and women). These three men were once excommunicated from the church, came back to the church, and never denied what they saw. What do Mormons order at Starbucks?

In today's episode, we sit down with Jesse, of Sunday Jesse, to talk about Starbucks and what members of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints can order! (Also known as Mormons)  Jess makes videos talking about modest fashion for women, sister missionary prep and other church (Mormon) topics. But for today we talk about Starbucks. As many of you know, members of the church (Mormons) are not supposed to drink coffee because of the word of wisdom we have in place. (Check out  our other episodes that talk about the word of wisdom) So what do Mormons get at Starbucks if they are not supposed to drink coffee? Kwaku gets CALLED OUT!

Kwaku, we love you, but someone had to call you out eventually... 😉  Sometimes we get really, really angry comments from people not of our faith (our religion being the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). And sadly, even people of our faith leave angry comments as well. There seems to be A LOT of contention. Is contention ever okay? When should we fight for our beliefs and if so, how do we go about it?    David says that there is a difference between disagreeing and being contentious. He says that if you are contentious in missionary work, you are a missionary for the wrong side. The spirit will never inspire you to be contentious.   Kwaku has a different opinion. He says that we need to re-define contention. We should be able to defend ourselves against false claims. Kwaku does mention, however, that if a comment is blatantly malicious, it’s rare for him to address the comment as he knows that his comment won’t change the mind of the person.   Justin says that you can usually tell when the spirit has left a conversation. He talks about his confrontation with a member of the Jehovah Witness Church. He said that the conversation eventually turned into an unnecessary debate that didn’t help either party.
