1689 9:3 - Objections to Total Inability Answered | Confessing the Faith
Chapter 9 of the Confession teaches the important biblical doctrine of the total inability of fallen to do anything spiritually good. We saw last time the clear, scriptural proofs for this doctrine. Still it has been widely denied. I want to address those objections.

Choice Experiences of Jane Turner (Pt.2) | Particular Pilgrims
I am returning to the spiritual autobiography of Jane Turner as related in her book “Choice Experiences” published in 1653. In our last episode, she told of the first two stages of her religious experience which she entitled “ignorance” and then “duty”. It was during the duty stage that she learned of the law and some of the work of Christ. This was largely through hearing the frequent preaching of puritan ministers. Later, she considered this stage to be the beginning of her conversion but not the fullness of it.

1689 9:3 - What is Total Inability? | Confessing the Faith
Though the Confession affirms free will, it affirms the kind of free will that is compatible with the idea that this free will is incapable of any spiritual good. Perhaps this seems paradoxical to you, but it is clearly the case.

Choice Experiences of Jane Turner | Particular Pilgrims
During these podcasts, I have introduced you to some of the scarce publications of Particular Baptist women from the 1600s. Because there were only a few years of press freedom during this century, and because women were not expected to publish, relatively few books of theirs were printed. Perhaps the best of them was by a woman named Jane Turner, who describes herself as the wife of Captain John Turner... “Choice Experiences” is the story of Jane’s being converted and kept by Jesus Christ.

1689 9:1 - Free Will Qualified | Confessing the Faith
Perhaps you were surprised to learn that the Confession affirms free will by affirming the natural liberty of the human will. But we also saw that it carefully defines what this phrase means. In this talk we come to a crucial balancing truth taught in the Scriptures.
