Episode 555: Priscilla and Joaquin Tallman – Mindset and Mountain Biking: Lessons from a Pro and Her Son (Parent-Athlete Series Episode 4)

I’m super excited to chat with Priscilla Tallman, a mental performance coach and retired pro volleyball player. Priscilla has an incredible background, having trained over 500 athletes and teams. You might remember her from episode 473, where we dove into the conversation around mental performance for young athletes. She’s also the author of the 30 Day Champions Journal and the Return to Play Journal. With her experience as a former pro athlete and a master’s in clinical psychology, she’s all about helping current and former athletes sharpen their mental skills and mindset for success in every aspect of life. Her son, Joaquin, joined us on this episode. He is 16 years old and an avid mountain biker. He currently races enduro and is making the shift to downhill racing. It’s such a heartwarming conversation between mother and son, and I couldn’t help but think how proud I’d be if I were his mom. We cover topics like raising independent kids, supporting young athletes, and the importance of mindset. I really hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Welcome to the third episode of our Parent Athlete series! Today, I’m thrilled to have Mark and Katrina Coogan on the podcast. Mark is the head coach of Team New Balance Boston, and his daughter, Katrina, is a standout runner on the team. Episode 552: Dakotah Lindwurm – Summer Olympics to NYC Marathon This Fall; Recapping Her Year, Her Race Positivity, and Her Minnesota Roots

I’m so excited to share this episode with Dakotah Lindwurm! After recording some post-Olympics interviews, I knew I had to bring Dakotah back on the show. This will be her fourth time joining us, and it’s always a blast having her on. She last came on the show right after making the Olympic team at the trials back in February (episode 512), and she’s also been on with Sara Vaughn after the 2023 Chicago Marathon (that was episode 494 if you want to check it out). We also had her on a few years ago after her back-to-back wins at Grandma’s Marathon (episode 398). It’s been incredible watching her journey and seeing how much she’s grown these past few years! In 2020, Dakotah finished 36th at the Olympic trials with a time of 2:39:08. Since then, she’s completely wowed us with her confidence, gritty training, and contagious positivity. If you’ve ever seen Dakotah race, you know she’s known for that big smile she flashes during her races, and it’s clearly a huge part of her success! Fast forward to the 2024 Olympic trials, where she placed third and then went on to the Paris Olympics, finishing 12th as the top American with an impressive time of 2:26:44 on a super tough course. And as if that wasn’t enough, Dakotah recently announced she’ll be running the New York City Marathon, which will be so exciting to watch after her Olympic run. She’s sponsored by Puma and she got engaged at the finish line in Paris during the Olympics! I also couldn’t resist asking her a bit about her Minnesota roots, which she’s always so proud of. I absolutely love Dakotah, and I know you all do too. I can’t wait for you to hear this conversation with the one and only Dakotah Lindwurm! What we talked about: 3:30- Catching up with Dakotah post Olympic Trials and Olympics 16:10- Smiling during races 20:00- Recapping her race and feelings post race 28:00- The decision to run NYC Marathon 34:00- The physicality in the Olympic marathon 35:00- What she learned racing at the Olympics 38:00- The Olympic experience outside of the race 41:40- Believing in herself Show notes: Dakotah on Instagram Dakotah on Episode 512 Dakotah on Episode 494 Dakotah on Episode 398 Connect with Lindsey:  Lindsey on Instagram Lindsey on Twitter Support our sponsors: Previnex Use the code “another” for 15% off  OR use code “LindseyStrength” for 15% off if you purchase their new Muscle Health Plus Training for a Half Marathon or Marathon? Episode 551: Monica and Luke Swanson – Raising a Professional Surfer (Parent-Athlete Series Episode 2)

I’m excited to release another episode of the parent-athlete series sponsored by Lily Trotters. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Monica Swanson and her son Luke Swanson. I had the pleasure of interviewing Monica on my parenting podcast last year. She’s a homeschooling mom of four boys living in Hawaii, and she’s raising some serious athletes! Three of her sons are already out of the house, but today we get to talk to her son, Luke, who is a professional surfer. Yes, a professional surfer! It was fascinating to hear both Monica’s perspective as a supportive mom and Luke’s insights into what it takes to train at such a high level from a young age. We also delved into what life is like now for them as they navigate Luke’s professional surfing career. I even asked Luke some Olympic-related questions, since I caught some of the surfing events in the Olympics and was curious about the ins and outs of the sport. Monica and Luke had some really interesting insights that I think you’ll enjoy. I love learning about sports outside of the running world, and I hope you find this episode as engaging as I did. Monica is one of my favorite people I’ve connected with through social media, and I always find her story inspiring, so it was so fun to catch up with her on this episode! And don’t forget to give our sponsor some love. Lily Trotters has the best compression socks out there. Whether you’re looking for recovery socks or a comfortable option for travel, Lily Trotters has you covered. Their styles work for both men and women, and as a woman-owned business, I’m proud to support them. Episode 550: Emily Mackay – World Indoor Bronze Medalist, 2024 Olympian, and a new PR of 3:55.90 in the 1500m

In this episode, I’m so excited to have Emily Mackay as my guest! Emily recently competed in the Paris Olympics, representing Team USA in the 1500 meters. It was such a thrill to watch her make the team—what a stacked field! Emily had to run an incredible 3:55 to secure her spot on the Olympic team alongside Nikki Hiltz and Elle Purrier-St.Pierre. It’s wild to think that just a few years ago, in the 2021 trials, Emily’s personal best in the 1500 was 4:17. Fast forward to 2024 she’s run so many PRs, including a 1:57 in the 800m. In our conversation, we dive into Emily’s incredible progression and what it took to get here. She also opens up about her Olympic experience, how she felt not making the final, and her reflections post-Olympics. Emily runs for Team New Balance Boston, coached by Mark Coogan, and if you haven’t been following them, you’re missing out—they’re one of the most exciting teams right now. And yes, we do talk about that hilarious Instagram video with Laura Green that made us love the team even more! This episode isn’t all about running, Emily shares what she’s reading, listening to, and her favorite spots in Boston. It’s a fun, well-rounded conversation that I think you’ll really enjoy. What we talked about: 6:00- Training with Team NB Boston 10:00- Believing in herself to make big jumps in improvement 23:00- Breaking down her race at the Olympics Trials 33:00- The confidence she’s gained from recent PRs 35:00- Her Olympic experience 52:10- End of podcast questions Show notes: Emily on Instagram Book recommendations: A Court of Thorns and Roses The Covenant of Water Connect with Lindsey:  Lindsey on Instagram Lindsey on Twitter Support our sponsors: Lagoon Use the code “Lindsey” for 15% off your order 2Before Use the code “Lindsey” for 30% of 20 packs plus free shipping Training for a Half Marathon or Marathon? Episode 549: Sara and Kiki Vaughn – Parent-Athlete Series Episode One

I’m thrilled to introduce a new series on the podcast – the Parent-Athlete Series! In this series, I interview both parents and their children, exploring their unique journeys together. We’re kicking things off with one of my favorite runners, Sara Vaughn, and her daughter, Kiki Vaughn. You probably know Sara as the 1500-meter runner turned marathoner, with an impressive 2:23 marathon personal best. She’s also a Puma athlete, a mom of four, a realtor, and the founder of the Vaughn Child Care Fund. On top of that, she’s achieved two top-10 finishes at the Chicago Marathon. Kiki, her eldest daughter, has recently started college at Northern Arizona University (NAU), where she’ll be running track and cross country. In this episode, we dive into their experiences – Kiki growing up with a dedicated and accomplished athlete as her mom, and Sara balancing her athletic career while raising a family. This conversation was a lot of fun, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share their story. Best of luck to Kiki this fall at NAU, and to Sara as she prepares for the Chicago Marathon! Episode 548: Rory Linkletter – A Season to Remember – 2nd Fastest Candian All Time in the Marathon and Olympic Debut

Today my guest is Rory Linkletter. He just ran in the Paris Olympics in the marathon. This was his first Olympic team for Team Canada, which is very exciting. He qualified for the Olympics running a 2:08:01, just nine seconds faster than the Olympic standard at the Sevilla Marathon. This race made him the second fastest Canadian of all time over the marathon distance. So amazing to see Rory’s career take off over the past few years!! Rory has been working with Ryan Hall as his coach leading up to the Olympic Games. Before that, he was with NAZ Elite under Ben Rosario, and he also was coached by Ed Eyestone in college when he ran for BYU. In this episode, we hear about those three different coaching styles and what those coaches meant to him. He is transitioning from being coached by Ryan Hall to looking for a new coach and he shares about what he is looking for in a coach in this episode. Since Rory was last on the podcast, he’s had two kids added to his family. He talks about that transition and what that’s been like training at a high level and being a dad. Episode 547: Sabrina Little – The Examined Runner, Why Good People Make Better Runners

Today, my guest is Sabrina Little. Sabrina is a five time national champion. She’s a mom, she’s a professor of philosophy, she’s a trail and ultra runner, a world silver medalist and the author of the book, The Examined Runner.  This is Sabrina’s second time on the podcast! If you want to hear a little bit more about her backstory, she was episode 346 of this podcast in November of 2021, where we talked about philosophy, running and motherhood. Today we catch up on what’s going on in her life. She’s now the mom of two. When we first talked, I think she was fresh off her first baby. Since then she’s written the book The Examined Runner, Why Good People Make Better Runners, is a deep dive into the conversation of how striving to be a better person make you a better runner. It’s a really great book and I loved reading it. She looks at key ideas and virtue ethics. It is one of those books where you underline, you take notes, you read it little by little and really try to understand it. And in this conversation, I loved getting inside Sabrina’s brain a little bit more.  What we talked about: 2:50- Catching up with Sabrina 6:30- Where running is fitting into her life right now 10:50- The process of writing The Examined Runner 15:00- Working on our “character flaws” 21:50- Happy feelings aren’t always the goal 24:50- Finding purpose 32:25- Envy 33:40- Coaching and combining her philosophy knowledge with coaching 38:05- Prioritizing where you spend your time  53:10- Last message to pull away from her book Show notes: Sabrina on Instagram Book Suggestions: The Anxious Generation Demon Copperhead Connect with Lindsey:  Lindsey on Instagram Lindsey on Twitter Support our sponsors: Lagoon Use the code “Lindsey” for 15% off your order 2Before Use the code “Lindsey” for 30% of 20 packs plus free shipping Training for a Half Marathon or Marathon? Episode 546: Abby Nichols – Professional Runner for NAZ Elite; From Olympic Trials Reflections to Her Summer of Racing

Abby Nichols was in town in Raleigh for the Sir Walter Mile so we had the opportunity to do an in person interview! She was the reigning champion of the Sir Walter Mile and she agreed to just come on over and sit in my living room and record, which was so fun. Abby runs with Hoka NAZ Elite and she is a 1500 meter and 5000 meter runner. She has a personal best in the 1500m of 4:07. Her mile PR, which was run at the Sir Walter Mile is 4:26 and she has a 15:03 PR in the 5000m and 32:27 PR in the 10,000m. Abby grew up in Ohio, ran for Ohio State, and then went on to run for the University of Colorado. Unexpectedly, we took a turn and talked about her time at University of Colorado, and she weighed in on her thoughts on Mark Wetmore and Heather Burroughs and how they won’t be coming back to coach the team this coming year. Abby competed at the Olympic trials in the 5,000m and had a bit of a disappointment there. She talks about that and what that’s been like to bounce back from that and continue to race well this summer. I loved chatting with Abby and am so excited to see what she does during the rest of her career!
