Episode 448: Bailey Kowalczyk – Nike Trail Pro; The Balance of Health and Performance
Bailey Kowalczyk is a trail runner. I learned a lot in this episode, I love talking to trail runners! She recently signed a contract with Nike running with their trail team. She burst onto the trail scene in 2020 and she had some really great FKTs (fastest known time). Most recently, she had a really great race at the Golden Trail Series which is a stage race were she placed fifth overall. In this epsidoe, we go back to her day srunning at Clemson University. Bailey had some significant troubles at Clemson, she was medically released due to disordered eating. She moved to Boulder, Colorado after that and discovered trail running.In this episode, we talk about some of Bailey’s hardships and about how she is passionate about running as your strongest, healthiest self. Today’s episode in this coaching series is with Ryan Hall! Ryan is one of the greatest American distance runners of all time! Ryan Hall is a two-time Olympian for the United States in the 2008 and 2012 Marathon. He is the fastest American to ever run the marathon (2:04:58) and half marathon (59:43) distances. Ryan retired from professional running in January of 2016 and is now one of the founders of Run Free Training.In this episode, Ryan talks about some techniques and ways to stay in the game mentally when it feels daunting and hard. We also get to hear about his coaching and his training groups. I loved digging into Ryan’s mentality and learning about how he coaches his athletes. Episode 446: Joan Benoit Samuelson; Pioneer in Women’s running- first Women’s Olympic Marathon Champion (1984)
Joan Benoit Samuelson is an icon in our sport! Joan is the gold medalist from the first women’s Olympic marathon in 1984. She held the American record for 28 years in the marathon, 2:21:21, which she ran in Chicago. She won the Boston Marathon in 1979 while a college student and she won it again in 1983. She is the founder of the Beach to Beacon race.She is one of the founders of the Donna Marathon which is how we met each other! The Donna Marathon supports families walking through a breast cancer diagnosis through the Donna Foundation and it supports ground breaking research. Episode 444: Vicki Hunter – Running and Returning: Seeking Balance in an Imperfect World
Vicki Hunter is a runner and author. She has a book out called Running and Returning: Seeking Balance in an Imperfect World. She was a competitive runner in her late 20s when she qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon in 1988. She went from a 3:50 to a 2:49 marathon in just 16 months. She was also in a horrific car accident while she was pregnant with her first child. She was in the hospital for 6 weeks and was in rehab her entire pregnancy. We talk a lot about that experience and how it changed her life. She ended up having a healthy baby girl on her due date.This conversation is a story about Vicki’s relationship with running and how it has changed over the years but how it has always been something that is really important to her. She also recently ran a 3:28 marathon at the age of 62 so we talk about aging in this conversation as well! Episode 443: Catching up with Sara Vaughn – Vaughn Childcare Fund and Heading to Boston
Sara Vaughn is back on the show for the fifth time!Sara is a 1500m runner turned marathoner. She is the mom of four and a full time realtor. She ran her third marathon this past fall at the Chicago Marathon where she placed 7th in a time of 2:26:23. She recently announced that she will be running the Boston Marathon this Spring. Sara just launched the Vaughn Childcare Fund to provide support for parenting undergraduate student-athletes. One of the big parts of Sara’s story is that she had her first baby while she was a junior in college as a student-athlete and she did not have a lot of resources herself so she has made it her mission to help provide people in similar situations with resources. As the NCAA slowly adapts to include parents in their mission of education, inclusiveness, and well-being, they are still a highly underserved population. So Sara’s new project is going to help to fill that gap with financial support for childcare, mentorship, policy writing, and policy adoption. Episode 442: Lucy Bartholomew – Ultras and Ironman; Finding Joy in the Process
Lucy Bartholomew is an ultra runner and is now an Ironman. She completed her first Ironman last year, placing fourth and qualifying for the Kona World Championships so she will be doing that this year!Lucy broke onto the Ultra scene in 2017. She placed third at Western States in 2018. She ran her first ultra at age 14, which is a really fun story that she shares about in this episode. Lucy is supported by Salomon. Episode 441: Laura Thweatt – A Fresh Outlook on Training and Racing
Laura Thweatt is back on the show! She was first on this podcast back in May of 2020 on episode 247.Laura just announced that she is running the Boston Marathon. She is a 2:25 marathoner. She placed 5th at the Olympic Trials in Atlanta. This past fall, she had a disappointing race at the Chicago Marathon and she shares all about that in this episode. Episode 439: Elly Henes – Transition to Pro Running – 14:52 5k & Being Coached by Mike Smith in Flagstaff
Elly Henes is a professional runner for Adidas. She lives in Flagstaff and is coached by Mike Smith. Elly ran for NC State where she was an NCAA champion in the 5k. She won that title in 2021. This was exactly 30 years after her mom became NCAA Champion in 5k at NC State as well. She was coached by her mom at NC State.She is a 10 time All-American and 6 time ACC Champion. She placed 6th at the 2020 Olympic Trials coming right off of her NCAA title!Elly has a PR of 14:52 in the 5k which she ran in Berlin last year. Last week, we released a re-run episode with Elly’s mom, Coach Laurie Henes, who is the cross country head coach at NC State. They just won their second national title in cross country at NC State.
