Episode 113: Mladen Jovanović- Cultural differences around the world and there impact on coaching
“I don’t believe we can completely ditch the intuitiveness of the coaches. You want to use that data to help you, maybe to give you more question than give you concrete answers. It’s a combination of intuitive thinking and data driven facts.”Mladen Jovanović sits down with us to talk about his experiences traveling the world as a coach in each corner of the world. We start out discussing cultures around the world, and how those differences impact how you SHOULD work with athletes. This leads him to his lessons learned from coaching in five different countries on three continents. He then breaks down how different sports prepare, both in the micro and macro, and how he sees the training and sport science practices in the regions he has been in, the influences, and how each are progressing. Next Mladen shares his thoughts on monitoring and its impact on being “smarter” in development and how they utilized technology to make sure athletes were prepared properly. That ties right into some flaws in injury prediction modeling that he has seen, and why we might be chasing our tails with some of it. He finishes off with sharing what he’s doing now, what his research is for his PhD, and why he chose that. ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 112: Val Nasedkin, Omegawave-Readiness vs Preparedness vs Sport Mastery
“Because true and always true are different things.”Val Nasedkin sits down with us to talk about readiness, preparedness, and sport mastery in today’s edition of The Podcast. We start up catching up with Val, and what he’s been up to sense we last saw him at The Seminar. We then discuss the differences between readiness and preparedness, what are the differences, why it matters? This leads up to what’s actually important to be an athlete, and what makes up athlete preparedness. Next, he shares with us where the idea to look into readiness came from. He also breaks down each physiological factor that makes up the individuals level of readiness. How does sport mastery fit in with both of them is what he touches upon next. He tells us why it is its own unique entity, and where people get confused in the terminology of it. He then discusses the functional system, and how each portion of the physiology of the athlete builds into the readiness of the athlete based on multiple systems We finish off discussing ways that coaches could look at training based on these systems to help drive decisions. My Thoughts Monday #11-Scott Brincks, University of Richmond-Are we doing too much, too little, or what's needed?
“The bottom line is, we are here because of the athletes. We are here because we love what we do, and that drives our passion but can also could our thoughts because we want it so bad for them. Sometimes, simple is the best. Sometimes, just hard work can be successful.”University of Richmond Director of Strength and Conditioning Scott Brincks asks the simple question to all of us today, “do we do enough, or do we do too much?” He asks this question, not just of the what’s, how’s, and when’s of our programming, but all factors involved. He shares with us how he comes to make decisions in all aspects of his program from training to monitoring, and how the idea of doing what is necessary to achieve the goals he and the athlete have come up with drive all these decisions. He finishes off asking us to think of some simple things with our programming: is this going to benefit the athlete, help them be successful, is it safe, and do you believe in it?ENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #10-Jake Jensen- Mental Toughness?
“In a lot of team sport situation mental toughness becomes a scape goat for underperforming athletes weather they lack tactical skill or physical conditioning it’s always convenient to blame mental toughness”Mental toughness is, and always will be, a point that divides our industry. Today, Jake Jensen shares his thoughts on it. Jake refers to research in to how he defines it, and looks to improve it with his athlete. This is through evaluating the athlete like we would in training and improving what area’s they are weak in. Looking at it in this manner helps coaches look at it as a more “physical quality” in how you train, teach, and develop it including an example of how, step by step, it can be done. Episode 110-Anna Kuzan, Grand Canyon University, Building relationships and culture from day 1
"There’s a lot of people out there you want to reach out the them and say, “how was it like early on?” because it wasn’t probably all the roses that they have now. They worked to get that respect. They worked there ASEES off to get that respect, and hearing how they worked their ass off, cause you’re going to be at a smaller school, or you’re gonna work for a coach that doesn’t really care for you. And you’re gonna want to know how to earn that person’s respect, and how to get it. What to do in cases that you might come to. You come up to a wall and are like, “Man, I can’t through this wall”. You reach out to someone that you know who has been successful, or who has been through it and you bounce ideas off them. Hopefully they’ll give information like, "Hey, this is what I would do, this is the approach I would take," and just listening to them and their advice."Today we are joined by Grand Canyon University’s Anna Kuzan. Anna starts out sharing with us her experience with Ole Miss Softball. This two year turn around brought a team from not making the SEC tournament, to winning it two years later. She shares, step by step, the process that they, as a staff, went through to bring about this change. She then touches upon the differences she sees between where she was and where she is, both in the athlete’s and the situation. We finish giving her advice for young coaches moving forward and specific advice for young female coaches getting into the game. ENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #9: Bob Alejo-What is the state and future of the profession?
“So, let’s stop all the complaining. Let’s come up with a solution. What we don’t need is observations and advise. What we need are announcements. We are announcing what we are doing. Episode 108: Jason Dierking, University of Louisville-Using evaluations as data points to drive training
“You got to find that balance between understanding you can’t be a slave to the numbers. You use it as information and it’s hugely valuable, but at the end of the day you have to take it in conjunction with the subjective piece, and how these players are responding and feeling.”Jason Dierking from Louisville sits down to share with us how he evaluates his soccer players and how that drives his programming. He starts out by talking about what he’s looking at by defining those parameters, the evaluations they use to look at those parameters, and how those evaluations drive decisions on how to prepare each athlete. Next, he discusses how the plan changes throughout the year looking at it as the individual athlete vs the whole team, and how athlete tracking and monitoring technology is used to help assist the process. We finish off talking about how he handles his swimming athlete’s, how they evaluate them, how that drives training, and how that fits into the culture of the program.ENJOY THE CONTENT?
