Episode 118: Jeremy Frisch-A Long Term Athletic Development Model Requires Physical Education

“Having kids started this thinking because I wanted them to have access and I wanted them to be exposed to, you know, not just training, but enough movement as they’re growing up so when they do get older weather they play sports or not they want to be competent movers so they can go out and do fun stuff and not be stuck, hurt, or out of shape, or overweight or any of those things. So, I wanted to start them on the right foot.” Today we are joined by Jeremy Frisch to share his Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD) Model. Jeremy first starts out sharing with us where the idea for the model he has developed came from and how the program has evolved with USA Football. Jeremy then breaks it down, piece by piece, and step by step to how the program is moving and the progressions they are implementing. His plan allows for fluid progression and regressions based on maturity and development that is absolutely fantastic. For more, make sure you follow him on twitter: @JeremyFrisch and instagram: @achieve_performance to see more of what they’re doing with their program.ENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #14: Katlyn Haycock, University of Michigan-The Goal Should Always Be Perfection

“Even if the perfection isn’t attained the outcome is decidedly better than just ‘good enough’”This weeks edition of My Thoughts Monday is brought to us by Michigan’s Katlyn Haycock. Katlyn discusses with us Jon Bowers TED talk (check it out here: https://www.ted.com/talks/jon_bowers_we_should_aim_for_perfection_and_stop_fearing_failure) on perfection that hit home with her. In the talk there are multiple fantastic examples as to why aiming for perfection needs to be the goal at all times and Coach Haycock connects these examples and quotes with examples in athletics that coaches see regularly. This also drives straight into fears of failure and the all to dangerous “good enough” that has crippled team in the past. She finishes out with her interpretation of the definition provided on perfection and why she feels it’s important for athlete’s to understand it.ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 116: Mike Bewley: How a personal Litmus Test Truly Enhanced His Program.

“To me, that’s the ultimate Litmus Test. If you got something in your weight room, or you have some sort of mantra. Go to your kids and say “can you recite that? And more importantly can you define it?” If they can’t, it’s an opportunity for you to step back and say, “ok, how strong is my culture? How am I trying to support the staff upstairs? How am I trying to create that connection so we are all speaking and saying the same thing and reinforcing on and other’s end goals?” I think if you do that the score board will take care of itself.” Mike BewleyWe are joined by Clemson’s Mike Bewley in this week’s edition of The Podcast. We start out catching up Mike on his travels from Dayton, to Atlanta (GA Tech) and now Clemson. That leads right into why he feels he was attractive to Clemson and how they have started to “turn things around” in the weight room. Coach shares with us some specific steps he took to build the “culture” back in the weight room. These were building accountability “contractually”, and defining everything that they are doing from goals, to their focal point phrases and terms were. This was due to an internal Littman’s test that he ran, that they group failed awfully. Next, he shares a story about how using a pair of boxing gloves and a breakfast club helped reinforce their mantra and get people to not only buy into that but buy into each other. We finished off talking about Critical Reload, what it is, how it came about, and where they’re going. Check out more about it here: http://www.criticalreload.comENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #13-Jake Jensen, Considerations for Athlete Tracking

“When you quantify something like sports, you have to understand that the statistical measure of how that quantifiable number relates to the sport needs to be done by someone who understands statistical measures.”This week’s My Thoughts Monday brings the return of The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Eisbaren Hockey Club, Berlin, Germany, Jake Jensen. Jake shares with us his thoughts on implementing GPS technology as a means of injury prevention. The first point he touches upon is the cost/benefit of the technology. This leads him into discussing what are the costs involved with using the technology. This isn’t just limited to financial investments, but also man time hours required to collect and interrupt the data, along with all the set up required to actually use the devices. The accuracy of the technology is the next topic that Jake discusses, including research done on this, recent improvements in the tech, and not only how it relates to the devices, but also how that relates to the entire team vs positions vs each individual athlete. Lastly, he discusses what the numbers are and who should actually interrupt the data to get the most out of the tech.ENJOY THE CONTENT? My Thoughts Monday #12-Chase Campbell, Indiana Fever-Building and Maintaining Buy In With Athletes.

“That was something I learned early on in my career. When I tried to walk into a program and lay the hammer down and pretend like I was the one in charge, and that it was my way or the highway. That usually doesn’t go over that well, at least from what I found out.”In this week’s My Thoughts, Indiana Fever Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Chase Campbell discusses some methods he’s used for building and sustaining buy in. This “buy in”, in his opinion, starts with having an athlete led culture, which leads into him discussing how getting to really know your athlete’s impacts buy in. His third point he touches upon is learning to speak the same language of the athletes. Communication is key, so you need to know how to get points across to them. The final thing he touches upon is giving autonomy in training and how it can be utilized to increase buy in with your athletes. Who is Chase Campbell?Chase Campbell is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is currently the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Indiana Fever (WNBA). Prior to his current position, Chase made stops as an assistant strength & conditioning coach at Butler University, Miami University (OH), and Ball State University. Episode 114: Matt Wenning, Ludus Magnus- A Look at Training, Both Present and Future

“Obviously you can train harder when your younger but the philosophy is the same, which is, where are you weak and how do we fix these area’s so you’re less prone to injury, so we can train harder?”Matt Wenning joins us to discuss programming and the direction the world of training needs to move. After starting out with a brief background, Matt dives right into discussing some of the issues he sees in the world of training today. He touches upon the complexity of training, people rushing results, and the role of programming in recovery. Having learned from some of the best of the best in the iron game, Matt has been guided by and learned from fantastic coaches helping him build his programming. His “planning” is extremely similar even looking across platforms with tactical athletes (fire fighters and military), team sport athletes, general population, or lifters. He starts out looking specify at their weaknesses and the most common issues/injuries that occur within the sport/activity. This includes exactly how he breaks this down and looks at it to adjust training for both single clients and how he alters it for larger groups. Matt then breaks down some aspects of his programming including specific exercises he has selected. His break down of this includes exercise selection, reasons he selects those means, and what he is looking for to determine that selection. This leads him right into where he see’s specialized/specific exercise in the realm of training and why he feels these are moving further away from where we need to train people based on the obesity epidemic, and how that’s impacting basic training. He finishes out with sharing with us the direction training is going and the reasons behind it.Keep up with Matt and all the awesome content he’s sharing at the following:Twitter: @RealMattWenningInstagram: @realmattwenningFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/realmattwenning/Matt’s Website: https://www.wenningstrength.comENJOY THE CONTENT?
