Throwback Thursday, Interview with James Madison University's Olympic Sports High Performance Team
I had the great pleasure of having Dr. Christian Carter and Coach Willie Danzer on campus the other day to hang out and talk training. It was a great discussion for the afternoon. These guys are doing great things up in Harrisonburg, and I can’t thank them enough for coming down. This is the first (of hopefully many) discussions we will have here where we ask coaches the simple question: “What are you doing right now that you are excited about?” and “What do you do best?” This idea came to me from a visit with NC State Strength and Conditioning Coach Bob Alejo. Coach Alejo asked me these same questions, and all I could think about was how great those questions are, and how great it would be to ask other coaches and share that info with our readers. I hope you all enjoy the podcast and the rest to come!ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 122-Tony Holler-Plainfield North High School- Herding Cats To Build Speed
“They’ve adopted the idea that I have that being tired is not the goal, being tired is the enemy. Once you start thinking like that you’ve drank the Kool-Aid, and all of a sudden kids will love your program. You’ll get every kid out, and they’ll be ready to play or ready to run.”In this weeks edition of The Podcast we sit down and talk speed development with Tony Holler. Tony is a chemistry teacher, football coach, track coach in Illinois, and writer. Coach Holler starts out by sharing with us how he breaks down training, and what minimal dose/micro dose means to him. This includes a day by day breakdown of how he programs his work with his sprinters with specific examples of each day. The conversation then turns into how he got to the point where the idea of minimal dosing came to fruition, and why he stayed with these methods. He then touches upon his “Herding Cats”, where it came from, and why it’s been successful. Tony then breaks down day by day, each goal, and where the parameters came from. He then rolls right into how this program fits with his football team, and how they train. We then discuss some issues with Track Coaches, and where he sees some of the short comings in the set up of teams, along with the fears many football coaches have with his system. We then discuss some of the misconceptions of his programming, and what truly drives the success of what they’re doing with their athletes. He finishes off discussing RPR, how it’s grown, and where he see’s it fitting in with athletic development. Make sure to check him out on Twitter: @PNTrack and at http://trackfootballconsortium.com. My Thoughts Monday #19-Chris Hays, University of Louisville-Work Life Balance
“We need to take care of ourselves first, not selfishly, not even considering the idea of being selfish or not willing to put in the work. We need to take care of ourselves first so we can take care of our athlete’s even better.”This weeks My Thoughts Monday, Louisville’s Chris Hays reviews a letter that he wrote at the end of this tenure at George Washington University. This letter lead to a good friend “calling him out” for what he was doing. He asks the question as to how much this “badge of honor” is truly worth, and what are the sacrifices we, as coaches, are making truly worth it? This isn’t to question work ethic, or to say long day’s are bad, it’s a question as to how we can stay grounded more and not burn out as much. The issues that leads to a lot of these hours is that we do not quantify and qualify our work, and Chris touches upon idea’s with that to make sure that people are at their peek. He closes out by discussing what “success” as a strength and conditioning coach mean’s to him. ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 121-Boston Physical Therapy and Wellness-Dr. Zach Gabor-Communicating Around Pain
“We are seeing more and more and more how the research is really supportive of the fact that negative language can really perpetuate pain and persistent pain.”After a brief introduction Dr. Zach Gabor dives right into how he’s interrupting the latest work on pain science. Dr. Zach is a big advocate when it comes to understanding how vernacular has a massive impact on the perception of pain. Terms of fragility, as Dr. Gabor refers to them, that are used commonly do, in fact, impact not only if there is pain, but how bad that pain is. Emotional states are the next aspect of pain that he covers, and how the persons state at that moment leads to how “painful” something may be. These idea’s lead him to discussing some strategies and things to think of when we are discussing training and the potential for issues arising with our athletes. This leads us to a discussion of social media and communicating with coaches and athletes when you see trends occurring. The conversation closes with Zach sharing his role in education, and where he see’s that encompassing both (PT and S and C) field. My Thoughts Monday 18-Aaron Heishman, Progressing The Professions and Your Institution Through Collaborating
“Science is a way of thinking and it’s an approach to answering and solving a problem. It doesn’t necessarily matter if the scientists on your campus study exactly the research questions you have, but they may bring new insights and new lenses that can really support the things you’re doing and better help you better understand and help guide you in making training decisions.” University of Oklahoma’s Aaron Heishman shfares with us his thoughts on collaboration between sport performance and academia in today’s My Thoughts Monday. Aaron is in a unique position working on his PhD at Oklahoma while working with Men’s and Women’s Basketball. He discusses how academia can help in a “checks and balances” type situation in helping with formulating and assisting in ways to look at data, and how connections across campus can assist in building relationships with internships and graduate assistants can lead to massive improvements. His finishes discussing the issues with academia most likely not being the individuals to reach out to collaborate due to many factors, even though many would like to be involved.ENJOY THE CONTENT? Episode 120-Dr. Zachary Long: Monitoring Training Load to Connect Rehab to Training
“In the strength and conditioning world we have to realize that everybody’s volume and intensity tolerance is slightly different, and we just got to get better at just recognizing that, and understanding that if we keep hammering away at some people they’re not going to recover they’re going to get hurt, they’re not going to progress.” Dr. Zachary Long sits down and discusses the role of monitoring volume and training in both rehab and training in today’s edition of The Podcast. After a brief intro Dr. Long starts to break down the importance of monitoring volume, intensity, and means selected in both training and rehab. He discusses how this can help streamline transitions between rehab and training, and help decrease the likelihood of an athlete getting injured due to a spike in training volume. Next he touches upon ways to look at volume, and why the actual means utilized is so important in understanding the total volume of work done. This leads us to a discussion on programming and a simple way we can uncover problems to stay away from issues. My Thoughts Monday #16 Todd Hamer- Is It Really Culture?
“Everyone talks about what culture is set to win championships, and here’s the reality of it, the best athlete’s tend win championships.”This weeks My Thoughts Monday brings us Robert Morris University’s Todd Hamer talking about culture, and what his thoughts are on it. Todd discusses how everyone’s culture has issues, just like everyone’s program has issues. This is a personal thing that each coach needs to address in both situations working on our weaknesses versus our strengths. Again, this doesn’t end just at culture, but goes throughout the entire physical preparation process. Ham even goes as far as to shares examples of how he’s worked with “culture” in different teams that he has had the pleasure of working with at RMU. ENJOY THE CONTENT?
